Injured Sunderland star Anichebe to return in April

https://mtnfootball.com/bp_images/2017/03/xn701dmnbd091p9r0fs748u0o_150x150.jpg

Nigeria international Victor Anichebe is expected to return to action for English Premier League (EPL) club Sunderland next month.

Sunderland manager David Moyes has provided an update on the striker, who has been out nursing his injury since January 2017.

“We’ve sent Victor to work with a specialist in America and he should be back shortly – this weekend (18-19 March) or next weekend I think, ” Moyes told the club's official website.

“He’s running and he’s back on it so we felt that sending him to someone who can work one-on-one with him constantly [was the best option], and it looks like it’s working.

“My aim was to get him back for as much of April as I can, and I can’t guarantee that at the moment but we’re doing everything we can.”

The 28-year-old bulky forward netted three goals in 11 league appearances before sustaining an injury two months ago.

Sadio Mane: Senegal will beat Nigeria

https://mtnfootball.com/bp_images/2017/03/B17A2SM0565w_1_150x150.jpg

Liverpool striker Sadio Mane has predicted that Senegal will defeat Nigeria when the teams meet for an international friendly in London later this week.

The Super Eagles and the Teranga Lions will cross swords at the Hive Stadium in London on Thursday, March 23.

Nigeria have not lost a match against Senegal since 2002, but Mane believes his national side will get the better of Gernot Rohr’s side.

Senegal is the best, Nigeria not best anymore. Senegal will beat you guys in London,” Mane told Jalili Olademeji, as quoted by scorenigeria.com.ng.

Nigeria will also face Burkina Faso in another friendly in London on March 27.

Garragher surprised by Moses' progress at Chelsea

https://mtnfootball.com/bp_images/2017/03/15z1i4hco3gki1v462a3tsqh94_150x150.jpg

Legendary England defender Jamie Garragher never expected Victor Moses to have a future at English Premier League (EPL) giants Chelsea.

The 26-year-old Nigeria international, who is a defender-cum-midfielder, has been a revelation in the full-back position for EPL title chasing Chelsea this season.

Moses, who has been loaned out to Liverpool FC, Stoke City and West Ham United by Chelsea, has excelled under Antonio Conte's guidance.

"Another thing you want a manager (Conte) to do is improve players — and look at Victor Moses," Carragher said on Daily Mail.

"I never expected him to have a future at Chelsea," the former Liverpool star, who is retired from professional football, continued.

"Given he had been out on loan so much, and the levels he has shown have taken me by complete surprise.

"He has been excellent in his new role of right wing back."
The versatile player has made 27 league appearances for Chelsea this season - netting three goals in the process.

Orji Okonkwo Reveals Secret Behind Goal Scoring Run For Serie A Side Bologna

March 20, 2017 Nigeria

https://owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/image-25.jpg

Free scoring Nigeria youth international Orji Okonkwo has revealed the secret of his goal scoring exploit for Serie A side Bologna in an exclusive chat with Owngoalnigeria.com.

Okonkwo has been scoring goals for fun since joining Bologna, a feat that saw him promoted to the first team of the team in less than three months into his stay with the team.

The 19 year old forward suffered an injury setback which saw him missed the last one months, and upon his return dropped back to the Primavera side where he has been finding the back of the net on a regular.

”I now play as a top striker, that has helped me a lot because it is my preferred and original role. In Nigeria I played mostly as a winger due to the presence of other top strikers”, Orji told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” For instance I scored a free kick against Pisa in the Viarreggio, but I can’t remember the last time I took one in Nigeria because another player takes the responsibility. I have also improved a lot”.

Musa Yahaya – Why I Now Play As A Wingback At FC Porto

March 21, 2017 Nigeria

https://owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/image-35.jpg

FC Porto Nigerian forward Musa Yahaya has revealed to Owngoalnigeria.com the reason behind his conversion to a right wing back by the coach of FC Porto.

Yahaya played as a wingback for Porto B in their 0-0 draw against Vizela in a second division game in Portugal, and despite not playing in his original role gave a good impression of himself.

Prior to the game against Vizela, he played as a left winger against Manchester United in their 2-0 win in the International Premier League Cup, a game which he was voted man of the match.

His conversion to a right wingback raised some eyebrows but the 19 year old former Spurs trainee says it was done by the coach because of the way they intend to approach the game against Vizela.

” I am a forward player but I can play anywhere for my team. The coach told me I was going to play as a wingback before the game and I have no reason to say no”, Yahaya told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” The role is demanding and I love it, I won’t mind playing it again in the future. My aim is to improve in all aspect of my game and my new role will help me improve on my abilities to defend”.

Eagles Players – We Are Missing Mikel In Camp

March 21, 2017 Nigeria

https://owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/image-10.jpg

Some players of the Super Eagles of Nigeria have confessed to Owngoalnigeria.com correspondent in London that they are missing the presence of their influential captain John Obi Mikel.

Coach of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr excused Mikel to enable him settle down properly at his new Chinese side Tianjin Teda, particularly as the league is just starting in China.

The decision made the coach elevate vice captain of the team Ahmed Musa to the role of captain, but despite Musa’s senior status in the team, some players are still missing their main skipper.

” It’s not the same without Odogwu (Mikel). He is more than a captain to us, there is more fun and unity when he is around. He talks to us individually and usually light up training”, one of the players told Owngoalnigeria.com.

Another player who is staging a comeback to the team after a brief absence also lamented the absence of the 29 year old captain.

” So unusual for him not to be here with us, we are very used to his presence. His calming influence both on and off the pitch and also financial advices on how best we can spend our money. How can it be normal without a guy like that”.

Very very poor defending, not to take away his ability to score. However I noticed the team he plays for seem to pass the ball well, especially their midfielders. But all the teams they played against were poor, extremely poor. I would have thought they fixed the match to be honest. Poor positioning, no sense of awareness, goal keepers are not worth talking about. Super eagles material? I don't think so, if he does well in u20 or 23 I will be shocked simply because he will meet more organised defences. His shooting can improve though

The decision to let him leave the camp wasn’t arrived at just like that, as Rohr sort advices from one of his assistants who handles the fitness aspect of the Super Eagles.

After a three hours meeting , Rohr decided to release him to allow him continue his treatment with doctors from Chelsea, who are well abreast of his medical history regarding his ankle.

They better start warming up for life after Mikel. I dnt see Mikel in the picture post 2018 WC.

But for these friendlies, i pray our midfield doesn't collapse cos we know what the presence of Mikel adds to that midfield.

You may be right about the goalies and for defenders in other parts of the world. But for West Africa most of our defenders peak just shortly after their mid 20s.

Eg how old was Taye Taiwo when he was discarded?
How old Is Ambrose that we have discarded him already. What of Obaobona? What if Oshaniwa?
U and I know Echiejile has passed his peak. Omeruo at 23/24 seems to be on a declining curve.

Joseph Yobo peak when he was at Everton. He was in his mid 20s then. U and I know how we managed him in the national team for the last 3 or so years of his career.

I just gave examples of our recent defenders who are still seeing and can relate with.

If I go way back to Chidi Odiah and Babayaro.
U know Celestine peaked when he was at Chelsea. How old was he then. He was there between when he was 19 and 27yrs.Recall the greater part of his last 2 seasons there were spent on the bench. Taiwo took over from him when he(celestine) was 27. Odiah peaked while he was at CSKA and also the 2006 AFCON he was 25/26 then.

I can still go on way back. But let me stop here for now.

Talking about strikers. Most West African strikers peak between 21 and 25.
Trying to use these parameters from given projections is totally flawed in the case of Africans because our baseline data is simply far from validated.

Do you think it's only Nigerians that have age issues. Let's look at Obagoal irrespective of what his real age is, in the Chinese league he has scored 9 goals, more than Tevez, Hulk, Oscar, etc and what's his true age. Or we could consider Yakubu who is 34, or even Eto 36 when did these guys peakhuh It may seem scientific but what are the aggregate projected parameters used to quantify the baseline data.

African have a different set of variables in comparison to Caucasians. Essentially, when you describe them as having peaked they were already 30 in some cases.

On paper they are ahead no doubt.

However, games are not won on paper. The lack of Mikel in our midfield is a big big problem.

Go back to my comment again. I never gave a specific age but a range. A very few may fall outside that range.

Good you mentioned Yakubu, Martins and Eto'o. Let me give you a little assignment. At what age do u think each of those players peaked?

No idea.

With regards to Eto who is supposedly younger than Yak both have been able to be consistent goal scorers in top leagues for a decade until 3,4,5 years ago.

Martins I felt peaked at Inter and Newcastle but he then goes to Sounder and scores 40+ yes it might be the MLS and not a top league.

It's like saying when did Drogba and Or Ian Wright Peak. I am using your age parameters and it doesn't add up. It's much much more reflective of Caucasian players.

Something else apart from Drogba we will not be able to really have a good idea about thier real ages.

I digress but Defoe went to MLS came back then plays for Sunderland and now he is called to England at 34. Why not Obagoalhuh

Have you ever watched a YouTube video about a player and was still unsure about his abilities? That is simply what happened.

If I see so many goals scored by striker due to basic positioning errors and elementary mistakes from so many teams, I can not tell how he will perform in a league where he will get less of those kinds of errors.

There is nothing against the player. It is simply what I noticed.
