President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday approved the establishment of an operational base for the Nigeria Navy in the Lake Chad with the intention to boost security in the strategic zone.

The president gave the approval when he received the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Fielding questions from the press after the meeting, Ibas who said he was in the Villa to brief the president on the security situation in the maritime sector, added that the approval was significant because Lake Chad is a strategic location which serves as the link to four other countries.

According to him, establishing an operational base in Lake Chad would go a long way in consolidating the security situation in the area and consequently boost its economic activities.

The Lake Chad basin has been confirmed to have a large deposit of crude oil. However, the dilemma is that the lake encompasse 4 countries; Nigeria,Chad,Cameroon and Niger. Each country has a share of the oil deposit that fall within its individual territory, but due to the current Boko Haram crisis,Nigeria has been unable to commence exploration in her part of the basin. But it has been reported that Chad has long since commenced exploration, even going as far as to take advantage of the BH/army engagements in Mandara mountains of Nigeria to pass sub-surface extractors and drill oil from the part of lake chad that falls within Nigerian territory.
If Nigeria were to build a naval base on Lake Chad,it would signify our direct interest in taking charge of all activities within that region(including oil exploration),countries like France,Chad,Cameroon and Niger who have stakes there may not welcome such percieved "expansionism".

That's great Buhari is doing this. We need to strengthen our millitary presence with the region in general. Secure trade routes and leave no room for insurgents. It's just another step towards becoming regional power.
