Actually Certificate: Certificate gives you Many Skills while Degree gives academic qualification. I'm IT student but I had to enrolled certificates to learned Programming languages
Re: Certification Or Degree? by Nobody:
You need a balance of both...

A degree gives you underlying knowledge whilst certificates are a confirmation of your competency in a specified field.

You know how some companies can be with their, must be a graduate and completed NYSC with 5 years experience.
So to be safe, have your degree. The certification gives you an edge.

Please I have a cousin looking for an IT security entry position.
Please if you know of any openings, PM me wink

Certification is more important, but you can get the two to be on the safer side.

Get certificates, work on projects when you can and build up experience.

Most of the best programmers are self taught.

Certification without a degree is like building a house in the air.

This topic must have made front page at least 7 times or so.

Well you actually need both. Your degree is more like a basic foundation in the IT field while your certifications are structures and add-ons. In Nigeria especially, they are usually more detailed in terms of practical content.
Re: Certification Or Degree? by seun70(m): 7:38am On Mar 30, 2017
You actually need both - one gives you the theoretical foundation whilst the other certifies the practical understanding.

Refer to the quoted response below and you would understand why both is needed.

In this terrain, a degree may be a prerequisite to certification. In other words, the certification may only have enough weight if backed by your degree.

Degree. Don't anyone tell you otherwise.

Here's a blog post from a Google engineer about certifications.

None its all abt ur skill, wat can u do
Re: Certification Or Degree? by aikyg(m): 7:51am On Mar 30, 2017
Degree is always better in IT. It shows that you are disciplined enough to go through a five year academic exercise. One major thing people learn in the university is how to solve problems. That's why you spend five years reading books, writing quizzes/exams and executing projects. Get a degree, it is very important.
Re: Certification Or Degree? by Qyubee(m): 7:51am On Mar 30, 2017
Both...if u're new in the industry, i'm assuming u have a bsc already, then get a few certifications (cisco, microsoft or whatever). Upon getting a few positions in ur chosen field, u can then add more academic qualifications to it....skills are very important too!

You don't learn how to solve problems by sitting through lectures or classes, you learn by doing.

If I'm looking for a programmer I'm looking to see past projects not how much time you spent sat in class.
