I have a colleague, very sharp PHP programmer, sound SQL Server administrator with all sorts of certification but no degree and he is seriously limited in his career. IMO, get degree, then experience, after which u can go for multiple certifications. Follow this advise and thank me latter. |

I dispute this because I have seen an ICAN certified student who gained a job before his degree paper soldierdollar: |

None of the above. Your skills are what matters. The only question to ponder about in an IT interview: What have you done and what can you do? |

Both are very important but you'll need both because a certificate alone might get you a job but your career ceiling won't be very high because in most organizations especially in Nigeria there are certain levels and cadre you won't be able to go beyond without a degree, and someone with a degree and less practical knowledge might come and be your boss, but a combination of both will give you a solid edge |

iihtNigeria:None! Skills, wit and smart application of IT knowledge is the only thing that count. An IT certified slowpoke spent 2 days writing code for a loan calculator to embed on a website. Whereas, someone else just got a free online loan calculator and pasted the source code in 2 minutes. |

Austin234:Let's look at the bigger picture. An O'level holder with a certification cannot be considered for the post of GM of a company over BSC/B.eng holders with/without certification . You'll get a job quite all right but will your certification alone qualify you for for jobs requiring only graduates ? Don't deceive yourself . Certification is important but you'll definitely be limited . |

Don't let anyone deceive you. Degree helps you pass the door but certification will keep you inside |

I'm into IT with postgraduate degree & Certifications. The most important requirements in IT without regard to Nigeria is what you have done or can do. Let's face the truth, not everyone with certification knows much. Certification is just an initial criteria. However, you may grow very slowly position wise without degree, which will indicate you have the required analytical and problem solving skills, among others needed for Management role |

Get a degree, start gaining work experience and accelerate your skill level with relevant certifications. You can never go wrong with this strategy! |

(1.)Certification, (2.)knowing the subject matter and (3.)experience are the most important thing in IT. A degree would also be handy, but not necessarily an IT/Computer Science related degree, although certain jobs demand it. However, if you don't care about working for any company fulltime, then (2.)knowing the subject matter and (3.)experience are the most important! |

Kaeyzo:Many skills ba wo Pls lets not mis-inform people, I am final year I.T student and based on that can categorically say Degree Certificate only shows you passed through the curriculum of a University/Higher institution regarding your discipline while certification shows and your expertise/proficiency in certain areas of your disciplineFYI, most I.T/Computer Science students, especially those in their finals get confused when it comes to choosing a career path.Certification instills some level of confidence in an individual cuz it shows your prowess about a particular aspect of computing |

In my field of specialization ( Marine Engineering) Experience gets you the job first Then Certification (CoC for officers and Watching Keeping Certificates for ratings) Degree is not needed for sea work at all, Even if you have PH.d without your Certificate of Competency you gonna work as the lowest rank onboard a ship |
