Cloves are highly prized spice widely recognized for its medicinal and culinary values. It is the dried aromatic flower bud of a tree Syzyigium aromaticum. It belongs to the family of Myrtaceae. Cloves like other spice are available through out the year.

Cloves may be used to give aromatic and flavor qualities to hot beverages, often combined with other ingredients such as lemon and sugar. In Nigeria it is used to add flavor to Hibiscus tea(zobo drink)

Cloves just like other spices are packed with nutrients. It contains vitamins, minerals and fibre. According to whfood.com, Cloves are an excellent source of manganese. They are also a very good source of vitamin K and dietary fiber. They are also a good source of iron, magnesium and calcium.

The medicinal properties of cloves comes mainly from its essential oil. The essential oil contains eugenol an active compound well known for its antiplatelet, anti-vomiting, carminative, antacid, anti bacteria, antiviral , antifungal, antiseptic, gastroprotective, insecticide,insect repellent, anaesthetic, sedative,fragrant and flavouring properties. Other important consistuent of this spice include flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids.

The anaesthetic property of cloves makes it a useful tool for treating toothache. It reduces the pain associated with toothache and also get rid of bacteria.

Improves digestion

Cloves may be used in the treatment of intestinal disorders like vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal bloating and other bowel problems. It improves digestion by stimulating the release of digestive enzyme.

Anti inflammatory

Eugenol in cloves has been observed to reverses inflammation and cellular oxidation (which causes aging) . It inhibits nerve transmission between cells and the synthesis of prostagladins. Prostagladine are lipids that aid in recovery at sites of tissue damage or infection.hormone.org
