You can't try a drug you are not certain it ll work on humans because if it becomes toxic, they will suffer. But you may have killed that rat that was in your house some years back na

wow! Am impress. Maybe rat are not in your area that's why or it is your will not to do it. But i doubt if any human have never killed an animal deliberately before. It could be by direct hitting or with the use of an agent like a trap or poison. Well i kill mosquito almost everyday either when i hit it or when i sleep under an insecticide mosquito treated net.
Back to the main topic. For those rats to be use, it is to save humans so it is ethical. However it is wrong to maltreat the animal before sacrificing it during the experiment because some rats may be killed and their organs studied to further evaluate the way the organs of the rat used up the drug. And one more thing, it is not only rats that are use in the experiment. Just that it starts with rat and then biger animal may be a dog is use and when feasible a monkey before clinical trials in human. Monkey results are closer to human results than rats but it is good to check if the drug will be toxic in a small animal first whose system is close to that of humans before using it on bigger animals whose system is if not thesame but very similar to humans.

The Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHETSCO) says it has carried out research and development of a Phyto-drug for the treatment of epilepsy.
The Minister of Science and Technology announced this at the closing ceremony of the one week Technology Expo held at Eagle Square, Abuja. He said the drug was discovered by one of its 17 agencies charged with the responsibility of identifying local solution for local problems.
According to the Director General of the agency, Prof. Sunday Thomas, the anti-epilepsy drug was developed from the root of the plant belonging to the Celeastraceae family, which was identified and investigated for its chemical and biological properties for the treatment of epilepsy.
He said that the Phytochemical, antimicrobial brine shrimp lethality btest and toxicity test were carried out. The toxicity test, he said showed that the plant material was quite safe for consumption.
According to him, am antiepileptic studies carried out indicated that the plant extract was effective in the control of epileptic seizures in Swiss albino mice of mixed sexes.
