Professor Mike I. Obadan had his primary education at St Anthony’s Primary School, Uromi and secondary education at St Theresa’s Secondary School, Uromi and Esigie College, Abudu, Edo State, Nigeria.

Thereafter, he had his post-secondary education at the University of Ibadan where he obtained the Bachelor’s degree in 1973 and Ph.D degree in 1976, both in economics. For his good performance in the first degree programme, the University of Ibadan offered him automatic admission into the university’s postgraduate degree programme, secured a scholarship for him as well as his release (on deferment) from the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) programme in which he was participating as a pioneer. He had served for three months in the NYSC in Kano before returning to the University for postgraduate studies. Prof. Obadan later completed the NYSC service in 1977 after completing his doctoral degree programme. He is a distinguished scholar who benefited from Federal Government of Nigeria’s scholarship for his undergraduate education and the Rockefeller Foundation and University of Ibadan scholarship for his doctoral education.

In the course of his working life, he built management capacity through participation in capacity building courses and programmes in the United States and United Kingdom, for example, at the World Bank Economic Development Institute, Washington, and RIPA International, and Crown Agents, both in the United Kingdom.

Against this background, Professor Obadan has had an exciting and very rewarding professional career as an economist, educationist and administrator in the public service. He has engaged in active teaching and research in Universities and, at different times, he served as Head of Economics Department, University of Ilorin, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Chairman, University Research and Publications Committee, University of Benin. He is currently the Chairman, University of Benin Committee on Affiliation with the National Institute for Legislative Studies, National Assembly, Abuja.

Professor Obadan has been a visiting scholar at the United Nations African Institute for Economic Development and Planning in Dakar, and a visiting Consultant to the Council for the Development of Social Science in Africa (CODESRIA), 2005. Before then, from 1992 to 2004, he served as the Director-General of a federal government parastatal (undertaking training and research), the National Centre for Economic Management and Administration, Ibadan, Nigeria. He has also participated actively in the activities of his professional association, the Nigerian Economic Society, where he served as President, besides holding other positions such as Secretary-General and Vice President.

Professor Obadan, in the course of his career, has contributed significantly to national and societal development through services/consultancies to various national and international organizations including the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), UN Agencies such as the UNDP, UNIDO and IDEP, World Bank, European Union, CODESRIA, African Development Bank, ECOWAS Commission, NEPAD, the African Peer Review Mechanism, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Nigerian Governors’ Forum/UK DFID-SPARC, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Nigerian National Assembly, Federal Ministry of Finance, National Planning Commission, etc.

Until 2011, he was, for some years, the Chairman of the Economic Policy Analysis Network of the Harare-based African Capacity Building Foundation.

Currently, he is a member of the Foundation’s Strategic Studies Group (SSG). Prof. Obadan participated actively in preparing the Nigeria Vision 20: 2020 Economic Transformation Blueprint in 2009 and the First National Implementation Plan in 2010. He served as Chairman of the Macroeconomic Framework Group of the Vision 20: 2020 Committee and member of the Central Working Group.

He has also been active in the labour movement through service to the Academic Community, via the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). In this regard, he served as the First National Financial Secretary of ASUU. He also served as Chairman of ASUU, University of Benin Branch.

Prof. Obadan is deeply committed to research, publications and knowledge sharing and has published many books and journal articles in the areas of applied macroeconomics, international trade and finance, and development issues. He has to his credit about one hundred and eighty publications (excluding 25 technical reports) in the form of books, monographs, journal articles and chapters in books.

His two latest books were presented to the public at the University of Benin in April 2013. The books have the titles, “Foreign Exchange Market and the Balance of Payments” and the “Research Process, Report Writing and Referencing”. Two of his books had earlier been presented to the public in 2004 at the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs, Lagos.

Besides engaging in scholarly and policy research, Professor Obadan is an economic affairs analyst and commentator. His contributions are published in leading magazines and newspapers from time to time.

Professor Obadan has travelled widely in and outside the country in connection with his professional activities, including research, training, study tours and conference activities. In this direction, he has travelled to about fifty countries in Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas.

For his contributions to scholarship and national development, Professor Obadan has been honored by many organisations. For example, he has been honoured with the Fellowship of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), Social Science Academy of Nigeria (SSAN), and of the Institute of Management Consultants of Nigeria (IMC). He was conferred in February 2013, with ThisDay Newspaper’s “Nigeria’s Best Teacher Award”, dedicated to the celebration of teachers at all levels. A book has also been published in his honour, titled, “Perspectives on National Economic Management and Administration in Nigeria”.

Currently, Professor Obadan is a professor of economics at the University of Benin, Nigeria, In-house consultant to the National Institute for Legislative Studies, National Assembly, Abuja, and Chairman, Foundation for Education and Development (FED), Benin City.

Professor Obadan is a highly devout and active member of the catholic church. He is currently the Vice-Chairman, Parish Pastoral Council, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Ugbowo, Benin City. He is married with children.
