Isn't life funny?
By this time last year, I was an undergraduate dissecting dead bodies (cadavers) in nigeria. Now I'm flipping burgers in the USA grin

Very soon, I'd go back to dissection (this time, real humans). Life sha is in phases. grin

Maybe I'd have this thread moved to the diary section so you guys can shove your "i love nigeria more than the usa" comments up your respective anal sphincters. grin
Lol. Oga, I dey feel you jare

1) I entered the USA december last year.
2) I travelled with an immigrant visa, my mum is a citizen so she filed for us. I have my green card, so looking for jobs isn't that hard, you just have to be determined to work.
3) a lot can happen in 2years, there's a million and one ways to get legal in the usa. Enter yankee first, as long as you have people here that know what's up, you will find your way.
God bless your hustle bro... I like your frankness and focus not painting Yankee as Eldorado rather stating each struggle a migrants will face but with determination and zeal to excel you will make it...

PS... to everyone who has been dreaming of the American dream. never relent in your pursuit.. if God destined it. it will come through... stay blessed people

Well, Let me quickly share my own experience with you or a word or two.

My advicee : I am not the type that is here and keep discouraging others back home not to come here saying it is not easy, Yes it is not easy but you will sure get there.. I haven't reached where i am going but i am not where i used to be.

Usa is worth every penny you spend. My cousin visited me last week and smiled saying " You see it is not easy" and i also replied with smile too saying " it is really not easy, i feel like going back home".

Dont be discouraged, with hustling and prayers, You will get here.

If i have to choose again and again, i will always choose here over nigeria without thinking twice lol

Thanks to frankteller for opening this thread.
God bless you for this. Truth is, it is not easy anywhere in the world, but wouldn't you rather it not being "easy" in a place that actually works, and life isn't unbearable than for a place that is a hell hole and citizens aren't sure of the nearest future (all in the name of no place like home), home is where your heart lies and where you make it be, there's no easy way out in life one way or the other you'd have to slug it out, but I prefer to do so where quality of life is almost at a peak.
God willing, less than two years is what is holding me in this country.

Certified Nurse Assistant smiley. How many weeks did you studied the program for?

4 weeks+

While studying for it, I was working as a normal caregiver but I never really had much clients; work was real slow. (Maybe 'cos of my accent?)

I got cpr certification, the class was online; duration was 3hrs and it cost $25.

I also got Alzheimer care certification, safety carry certification (for transfer of elderly persons) and some other minor ones.

Well, Let me quickly share my own experience with you or a word or two.

1. I have a very close cousin here. When i was in Nigeria, she really tried her best, she do send me money like 10k to 15k and being a student, You can imagine how long the money can take care of things. She and her husband always complain of things of not easy in United state that bills are killing them, they even said after paying bills, the little money left, they do use them to buy used clothes at least to look good but i was surprised when the husband bought a benz E class for his 70 year old dad to be attending landlord meeting and yet they say things are not really easy in united states.

2. There is this bro in my area that went to usa in 2010, we were very close and guess what, immediately he got to the usa, he blocked everyone of us on facebook. I felt so bad and worthless personally. He thought we will be a pest that will be asking money everytime and the funniest, i have never even asked him for money before when he was in nigeria. So he came home last year dey "buga" everybody and i asked myself, is this not the same usa everybody keep saying it is not easy?

My advicee : I am not the type that is here and keep discouraging others back home not to come here saying it is not easy, Yes it is not easy but you will sure get there.. I haven't reached where i am going but i am not where i used to be.

Here, you won't hear of your bosses owing you salary, as you dey come work, you clock in with your fingerprint, your time go dey read, some companies even give you health insurance after being with them for some time.

Bottom line is, you are paid for every second of your time. Jobs full everywhere as long as you're legal. I'm basically a high school graduate, but I'm making some money jejely. Talk more of those who are professionals (like Cfcman them).
Like I said earlier, no matter what you read on this thread, you will not fully appreciate it until you see yankee for yourself. Na here you go see the true definition of "there are many ways to kill a rat". grin

From clocking-in, you'll graduate to a salaried position.
Even if you work a minimum wage job (full time) you will still be able to eat 4 square meals, eat at a buffet, and get a decent used car.
But, when it comes to housing, you may only be able to rent a room.

Congrats on all the certification you passed. It just shows how determined you are to get into that medical field. I hope you know you're still in the early stage with all these certificates, there will be a time whereby logging in on Nairaland wil become a rocket science.

You're a brainee, i know it won't affect you much smiley

we know baby, we know!! grin grin grin a total change of lifestyle and environment can be very exciting you know! so, you have to understnd from his own angle. You will feel the same if you moved to central europe (norway, sweden, denmark), life and environment in these places are far far better than what you get anywhere in the US.

Is that so? Tell me something brother.

yeah im Nigerian.. But I consider myself more of American than Nigerian cos I never met my parents --- mom died bringing me into this world. And I have been so disconnected with my roots that my only home that I know of is America. The only time I felt connected with my ancestry was while I worked in Nigeria 2013 - 2016.
Sorry about your mum. Loosing one's parent is bad news. May the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. (Amen).

How do you reconcile the fact that staff in Nigeria are treated like shit, underpaid and overworked with no peace of mind, while staff are treated better out there?
Is that one the fault of the gov too?

Hello everyone
Re: Yankee: through the eyes of a village boy. by Chicksy(f): 10:20pm On Apr 14, 2017
Please have got some questions to ask about migrating to US. My dad is an American citizen and sometimes in 2015 he filed for my siblings and I, 6 of us.last year August The petition was approved and we got an approval notice from uscis, that the case has been forwarded to NVC... Till then we still waiting for an interview date from NVC.. And last week a letter was received from NVC (Tho not seen it yet) but the person that got the letter said it just one of us names that on the letter. My question is are we going to receive letters individually concerning the interview and medicals or one letter as a family...tho the approval notice from uscis came in one envelope but 6 papers each for each person..my other question is does NVC processing takes so long cos we have paid necessary fees, submitted all documents requested. Thanks

Guys am sorry it's been a while I dropped a post no be my fault na Yankee as I Dy dey see am with my eyes lol..
So far America is good and it's for those who have to work towards what they want.Yes America is good and it's a land of opportunities those who are enjoying the system are those who are making $70,000 yearly They make nothing less than 30dollars an hour. But still doesn't mean those who don't do white collar jobs are not doing good. No matter how I explain you still wouldn't get it, now everything makes perfect sense to me I didn't understand back in Nigeria.
For those in Nigeria if a relative of your's sends you #10,000 monthly trust me is something we don't pick money from trees over here you work for your pay!

I did some research and found that the processing time could take anywhere from 150 to 575 days. Also, you and your siblings should have received individual letters. Your dad should contact USCIS for more clarification.

It depends on the circumstances. People who are making N500k, N300k or more (whose salaries are paid as at when due grin) would likely not see any reason to permanently immigrate to the US or some other country.
I doubt whether the likes of Otedola, Ifeanyi Uba, Dangote, or owners of transport companies would want to leave Naija; after all they are all comfortable in that country.
