It's not about being wise or not. That's about how much a normal, no frills, no extra burial costs in the US. From buying of the casket, to buying plot at the cemetery, to headstone costs, grave diggers and all. Google is your friend.

Mind you, it will cost waayy more to fly the corpse to a Nigeria.

Such a sad situation and I'm pretty sure the wife is here to have a child. May God help her and her family.

Then she should consider cremation as an option. Maybe it will be cheaper.

What you listed above are situations, being stranded means meeting what you didn't expect.

Electricity has never been stable in Nigeria since 1960. If you rent a house and no power supply, that doesn't mean you're stranded. Cos power has never been stable.
There's always insecurity under Abacha and till date

Think stress caused the heart attack. Guess it was like life or death for the baby to be born in the US.... the unforseen expenses probably stressed him out. Most likely he will be cremated and she given an urn with his ashes. She will really need help to get back home.

How exactly would the kids be granted a green card?? And where was he stated that he was working or even wanted to work in the first place? Most of these people just come here to have kids and go back to Nigeria afterwards. A lot of them bring older kids just so they could have s vacation of sorts.

You're very right! A lot of these people can't afford to pay cash for the medical expenses here but stretch themselves thin just so they can get the citizenship for their kids. And these bills pile up like no mans business

In USA you don't have options, they even have to buy the plot of land he will be buried in, it's not free. Unless they will accept to cremate him, then that will be cheaper.

It's always good to educate yourself. A normal burial with no added frills costs (no food, asoebi or whatever) more or less that amount. Why do you think people open gofundme to bury their loved ones? Because it's expensive! You pay for the land, the casket, the city permits, the funeral home services and so on. It's very very very expensive. Google is your friend.

That's why you have life insurance. It usually pays for the burial expenses. Those ones who don't have it, resort to donations. I still saw some at the traffic stop yesterday, carrying posters seeking money for the burial expenses for their grandfather.

I'm not contributing to any burial gofundme, and that's just me being practical.
