hence the call for true federalism, the need to bring power closer to the people so they can effectively hold their leaders accountable, how can 1 person steal $3M like its nothing, and if not for EFCC no one would notice, but nay, the enemies of progress aka northern power house as usual are against change because they are the ultimate benefactors of the corrupt system we practice, quota system, unitary style where they receive undue allocation from the resources of other regions based on phantom population and land mass, and what are our reps doing about it?nothing...

Must you blame the north for all your life's problems? A governor steals the money meant for his state instead you are here blaming the northern power house, if you can't hold your governor accountable now is it when you have your so called true federalism that you will? You better emanticipate your self from mental slavery and stop listening to your corrupt and incompetent local leaders who blame all the failures on northerners. Is northerners that have refused to pay teachers salary in bayelsa state? Is PEJ a northerner that chose to build a hotel and. Kept 50 million dollars in her accounts instead of using the money to build a modular refinery in her state. It high time that youths in the south realise that only they can make their region great and stop the hogwash mentality that the so called north is holding them now

Come let me tell you something, the person that thought of investing that money in a hotel is lazy and myopic is in his thinking. There are better business ideas that would generate better returns, have far-reaching impact and create enduring business

I want to ask you a question. Are you saying it is okay for politicians to embezzle government funds as far as the stolen funds are invested in the country?

skedman:
i am not supporting the governor for stealing the treasury but the fact that he has invested it in nigeria however,it is a plus. All these half baked graduate on nairaland employment opportunities is not just the staffs alone it include the contractors that built the hotel who may have more than 50 staffs, the sand suppliers, borehole, aluminium, and lots more and when the hotel is finally ready the diesel suppliers, fish, turkey, chicken suppliers , the market people at large ,apprentice and many others will benefit . Can you now tell me the jobs it must have created for the people . I think most of you are lazy and your brain is only limited to being a staff and not a supplier nor a contractor.

I think the unknown and unnamed Governor will be a member of the Saintly APC. If It were Fayose or Wike we would have heard of a Gestapo style attack by the DSS assisted by the NAF for air cover.

Sir, could you please educate me on the Singaporean style? I will appreciate if you do sir.
We have similar style already in that they also pay their political office others high salaries (including civil servants though). However, where the difference lies is that they make use of an extremely stringent penal code i.e. tough laws and sentences. They have a special Bureau (something like EFCC but totally independent) that arrest suspected individuals without a warrant and execute search and seizure orders carte blanche if there are "reasonable grounds to believe that any delay in obtaining the search warrant is likely to frustrate the object of the search". Most importantly, those found guilty of corruption usually face a 5-year jail term and up to S$100,000 ($80,000) fine.

It takes the grace of God for one to not be even depressed in this country. The guts to steal & greed in face of such hardship the masses are going through is just pathetic. Man's inhumanity to man. Salaries are not been paid, pensioners dieing of hunger & our beloved governors are still diverting funds & embezelling. When did we get so greedy? When did we become so heartless? Its not just about our politicians sef we all need to check ourselves. These politicians were also the masses at some point & were all complaining about those in power. But once they got their they became no different. At some point everyone gets tired & only cares about close family members.
May i never reach a point were i shut down my bowels of compassion & become consumed with greed saying "Every man for himself & God for us all." God help us all.

You can't have a death penalty clause in the constitution without first cleansing the Judiciary of corrupt Judges and blocking loop holes that the money hungry lawyers can use to defend their corrupt clients.

Without doing these adjustments the death penalty clause will just be there in the constitution for nothing sake.

As long as some blockheads, who are in the majority, continue to support the politicians because they belong to the same political party or are from the same geopolitical zones; the looting will continue.

For instance, if the governor in question here is Fayose, some blockheads would start shouting it's a witchhunt.

If it's Okowa, some blockheads would say the government is chasing its opponents.

And that's why corruption has continued unabated.

You need to go to Bayelsa state and understand how a state that receives the 2nd highest allocation in Nigeria cannot pay its workers. Hotel business was the in-thing under GEJ's regime. Now that the political patronage has dropped, go check out the hotel occupancy and room rates now as compared with the GEJ years.

Then you will see how faulty your argument is. Cross River has a garment factory which employs 5,000 workers. I am not sure it cost up to $3m to build. There are loads of industries which can be setup with far less than $3m. You think hotel business will make a mark on the employment situation in the state where this governor is alleged to have siphoned this money?

What is this one saying, the guy you quoted is right how many staffs will hotel business employ and how many people will contractors also employ you can't get up to 70 people but an industry with that amount will not only give contractors jobs will also accommodate not less than 300 factory workers, drivers etc and will produce more local items for consumption or use in Nigeria.

Rochas Anayo Okorocha and Chike Okarfor.

Chike Okafor was finance commissioner of IMO State 2011- 2015. Was Zenith Bank Manager of Owerri bank road branch.

Chike represents Obowo/.. Federal constituency .

He is close to the Governor and might be returned as APC candidate for IMO governorship 2019.

Cash lodged in Rep’s account through proxy

EFCC places restriction on NGF’s N8b, $80m

Detectives have traced $ 3 million of the controversial London-Paris Club loan refund to a governor, The Nation learnt yesterday.

The cash is believed to be part of the N19billion illegally deducted from the refund by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), according to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sources.

The cash has been found in the account of a member of the House of Representatives who got it through a proxy, the lawmaker’s brother. Both were not available for comments.

The $3million is being spent on building a 100-room hotel in Lagos, which the governor may forfeit to the Federal Government.

Also, the EFCC has placed a restriction on N8billion and $80million in the naira and dollar accounts of the NGF.

The Presidency has released N1. 266.44trillion to the 36 states in the past one year. The cash includes N713.70billion special intervention funds to states.

Following protests by states against over deduction for external debt service between 1995 and 2002, President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the release of N522.74 billion (first tranche) to states as refund pending reconciliation of records.

Each state was entitled to a cap of N14.5 billion being 25% of the amounts claimed.

Finance Minister Mrs. Kemi Adeosun said the payment would enable states to offset outstanding salaries and pension which had been “causing considerable hardship”.

The governors sought for the refund to states and local governments at a meeting with President Buhari on May 24, last year.

A source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “The EFCC is still investigating the N19billion allegedly diverted from the loan refund. The commission has so far interrogated 15 companies, more than 10 individuals and over eight bureaux de change used to divert the cash.

“The latest bend of the investigation is the discovery of $3million linked with another governor who benefited from the illegal deduction. The governor had engaged a member of the House of Representatives(who was also a former commissioner) to launder his share.

”The lawmaker was said to have wired the $3million into his brother’s account before moving it into his own.

“Upon interrogation, one of the suspects admitted that the cash was for the ongoing construction of a 100-room hotel for the governor.

“About $500,000 of the $3million has been recovered by the EFCC. It is a scam in which many people benefited and a sizeable number of proxies used to launder the funds,” the source said.

The $3million was transferred to the lawmaker for the governor from the $86million in the NGF’s domiciliary account.

“We will do our best to recover the already diverted part of the $3million. We may also apply for the forfeiture of the hotel to the Federal Government,” the source said, pleading not to be named so as not to jeopardise the investigation.

The $86million is said to be for the payment of consultants who worked for the refund for the 35 states. But none of the consultants has been paid. Some of them have already gone to court.

The source added: “The EFCC has placed a Post No Debit restriction on the NGF’s account with N8billion and domiciliary account with $80million.

“Out of the $86million, $3million was wired to the governor through a proxy and another $2million shared out.

“The EFCC is ready to lift the restriction on the two accounts of the NGF on a condition that the consultants and legal advisers who deserve to be paid will be given what they are entitled to in line with the agreement signed with the NGF.

“We want the NGF to involve the EFCC in the disbursement to avoid another diversion of the cash. As it is now, consultants and legal advisers are complaining that they are being shortchanged by the governors.”

The EFCC had earlier traced about N500million, which was meant for a consultant, to the account of a governor.

The cash has been retrieved

You are screaming they should name the governor when investigation is ongoing but when efcc starts losing cases in courts, it's you people that'll still blame them.

Don't you know these politicians are ready to spend the whole money they stole to free themselves in court. Can efcc afford to spend such amount?
The agency has to be really tactical in dealing with Nigerian politicians because, in corruption, they're actually smarter than efcc
When the case is closed and won, the new should come out. Why jeopardize the whole process now?
Why leak the story in the first place, if you cannot name the person involved?
