Lemme tell you something...it will be very difficult to see a male and female being ordinary friends for a long time.
If the female doesn't develop and harbour feelings for the male, the male will.
The only difference is that it depends on the guy. If the guy is sharp, he can always break the ice, which may or may not lead to sex, whereas the lilly-livered guys will die in silence, and end up discouraging the female from any guy that approaches her for a more serious friendship/relationship.
