The Exodus Of The Nigerian Middle Class Has Started. by bendike: 4:08pm On May 25, 2017
Hello folks, Recently i had cause to be at an events center in oregon on a Saturday morning.. The amount of cars trooping into the complex was just too much. Choice cars for that matter. There were over 500 cars parked inside the complex. The whole adjoining street also blocked with parked cars!. Now you also had those that came on foot to the complex. I can assure you the amount of people were in their thousands. Old, young, middle age etc but mainly of the middle class i assumed. On further inquiry i was informed that this is a regular occurrence every Saturday at designated centers all over the country.
Guess what, they all came to write IELTS examination that enables you legally migrate to USA, UK, CANADA, and AUSTRALIA!
My dear middle class folks are leaving this country in their thousands ohh! Most say it is for the future of their children. To enable them have good education and quality of life.
I fear for this country every day. Imaging my son learns how to drive and i give him a car, does it mean SARS policemen could arrest him and beat him up that he is a cultist or yahoo boy? I even avoid him strolling on the street as he is quite tall for a 14 year old because i am scared that police danfo patrol vehicle could arrest him for wandering.

It's good, let them go, this country is over populated. As soon as a large number of people migrate we will have more things to enjoy here, I'm so happy about this news, you should be glad because life will be much better when fewer people are using the available resources we have here, less people struggling for jobs, cheaper food stuffs, cheaper housing, etc I sincerely pray this is real.

Your son is not qualified to drive at his age, to avoid issues once he gets to the right age, he should get a driving license and your unfounded fears will be unnecessary, let's do the right things at the right time sir

Nigeria has been a developing country for more than 50+yrs yet there has been no tangible improvement. Corruption is at an all time high, we've got a set of criminals who call themselves politicians siphoning any money they come across.

We can't even boast of power supply, no roads, water, security is zero. It's only in Nigeria where it's highly dangerous for a young man below 25 to own a car, because You risked being shot by the police at any time. RG6AI

We've got a populace who don't really give a ____ about how they are treated, all we do is react online. Life is too short, some people just want to know what it feels like to live a decent life. I won't blame anybody looking for a way out.

I read your response, I must say I hope you have facts to back your statements. So give links and examples of young men below 25, killed for owning cars

And you said NO GOOD ROADS in Nigeria? How so, we aren't driving on mud roads, are we?

I don't have the time to argue with someone who has a mindset as yours, all I will say is try and leave the country by all means, afterall, it's a free world and no one is stopping you. First start by moving to the nearest border country to ours, then from there you can go, there's no point harboring such frustrations within you

I'm honestly glad to know people are leaving, that's a good thing smiley

Why not tell us how a drastic reduction in population will automatically translate to better standard of living for You?

Yes, I was coming to that but after reading your exaggerations I changed my mind

Here's a quick one, with a reduction in population, you will definitely have fewer people struggling for the available resources we have, for example, right now, because of high demand for good schools, prices of school fees are high to get quality education but when there are fewer people demanding such, prices will reduce

Wherever demand is high, prices go up, with a reduction in population, prices of goods, services, transportation will also reduce because fewer number of people will demand for it hence there will be a surplus in supply, bringing down the cost

Also, Nigeria being one of the most populous multi ethnic black countries is battling with how to utilize our human resources at the same time manage population explosion. Unfortunately we do not have correct data to help us solve this problem. There has to be some control and accurate data on population growth and it's implications for us in order to truly access and harness what we have

Our main problem is our inability to manage our explosive population complicated by our open borders where foreigners can easily mingle and do whatever they want

Because of our multi ethnicity, our population has become too big for someone to properly manage at the center this is why true federalism is the answer.

Other issues of concern are: laziness of the average citizen, lack of patriotism, change in attitude and value of the masses(get rich quick or die trying), tribalism, bad leadership, and corruption.

Good day

Even though over population may not be our primary problem but it is part of the problem and over population can surely affect the growth of a country negatively.

Its not the primary issue , accepted. But saying the mass exodus of folks leaving the country will help the country positively makes no sense. We've got countries 10times bigger than Nigeria doing way better.

This is a country where a few people own & control everything. Until we tackle the root causes, even if Nigeria is left with 100 people nothing will change.

You should be bothered if its a brain drain,

As they are here for now, what are they doing for the country? They are of no use to us here in the first place as most of them do not care about being useful to their home land so it's much better for them to go and contribute to their new country, there's nothing to be worried about.

Those of us who care, will contribute our own quota to make things better for our people.

The best brains here might not be able to contribute because of reasons beyond them doesn't mean they are reluctant to help. Its not a case of us vs them, but more of how can we use their knowledge. Its why America is top leading nation they acquire all the brains and accumulate wealth as a result of that. I think we just need honest leaders, because no leader is looking out for the people its why the people are looking out for their interest and travelling abroad is the answer that makes sense to them.

You are wrong. Americans are Patriots, things were not perfect but they made it how they want it to be.

A leader is the product of a society or are our leaders not products of families and our society? When I said our attitude is one of the problems we face here, I know what I'm saying

Same people migrating will go there and obey their laws but do they obey ours here? No.

Their brains have already been drained as most don't think of humanity but materialism

Let them go, they are creating opportunities for others here. For example, when investors come in, it is people who remain who will easily get the jobs available, when government jobs are available it is people who remain that will get it. I'm only trying to make you see why this is beneficial to the few that will remain

Land will become cheaper, house rent too and other things. We can't force people to use their knowledge afterall foreign missionaries who established schools, hospitals and Co here left all they had in their comfortable countries, came down here where we had so little to offer them and they made sacrifices whereas now that we have been empowered, they will study in our relatively cheap schools then migrate

Patriotism is all I see in this post and this is the foundation of all developed countries. Very uncommon especially among females. Almost all females on nairaland bark ferociously at the mention of Nigeria. They will tell us how US is better than Nigeria but silent on how they themselves are better than average Americans on the streets. Your types are very rare. Pls, don't be discouraged by comments from frustrated and hungry dry heads all over nairaland, this country cannot afford to lose your types.

Dear population analyst this your argument though solved part of problems facing Nigeria as a country but very insignificant portion of it. Bad leadership and lack of sense of reasoning on the side of followers leading to failure to harness our God gifted natural resources. The income from crude oil alone should go a long way in solving our problems but some enemies of state decided to live extravagantly on it as well as insuring the future of their generations yet to be born at the expense of you n I; Our enemies you n I defend with the last drop of our blood.
