5 Health Benefits Of Fasting by michaelo2(m): 1:15pm On May 29, 2017
In the spirit of ramadan, lets discuss fasting and its health benefits.

Fasting refers to not taking either food ,
drink , or both by yourself with no force, for a particular period of time. It could be done partially for some certain kind of food or as totally in which no food or liquid is consumed for a day or a few days.

If you can’t fast food for a day, give up coffee or sweets, here are several reasons to fast.

Detoxification : this is a normal body activity when the body neutralizes or gets rid of any type of toxins in the various organs like the colon, liver, lungs, or
skin . During fasting, the body turns to the fat deposits for energy, which releases chemicals from the fatty reserves and results in the removal of these chemicals through these organs.

Improves Mental Health: After fasting, the blood is filled with increased levels of endorphins, which makes you more alert and leaving you with a feeling of good mental health.

Reduces Risk Of Obesity : Fasting has been and is still been used to fight off obesity for a long period. It activates the liver enzymes and breaking down fat and cholesterol into essential bile acids, stimulating the metabolism and converts the surplus fat into heat.

Under medical guidance, fasting proves to be the simplest and surest way to take out excess fat with an acceptable amount of minimum risks to one's health.

Fasting can actually make you fatter. The power of fasting is not in losing weight during the fast, but in gaining control of your appetite after the fast, which is the REAL problem.

Gives The Digestive System A Break

During fasting, the digestive organs rest, giving the digestive system a much-needed rest. After fasting, both digestion and elimination are invigorated.

Lowers risk of type 2 diabetes:

Fasting is known to reduce insulin resistance, helping with insulin sensitivity, allowing you to tolerate carbohydrate better than normal. Leading to a reduction in blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

For persons with medical ailment such as diabetes , and chronic ailments like gout , advanced stages of cancer, and cardiac arrhythmia, in which the heart beats irregularly. It is also not advised for pregnant or nursing women.fasting should be done under medical guidance or not at all.

Ramadam Kareem to our Muslim brothers and sisters.

Hmmm... Most Nigerians fast everyday..

I know a lot of girls and boys especially students who don't eat till 1pm or till 3 in the affternoon...

We should be able to draw a line between fasting and starving your body of the necessary nutrients.... which is one reason for the high number of deaths and the incessant outbreak of disease in Nigeria...

You can still eat two square meals or even 1 square meal a day and still look healthier than everyone on the block... it is all about the nutrients you eat and not what you eat...

If you don't understand this.. Don't worry, simply join the Paul Samuel - FitnesDoctor (that is me) on his blog... I am here to make you look good through health and fitness..

*fasting becomes meaningless when it's done cos others are doing it.

*shouldn't be hypocritical

The only day I ever tried fasting, I barely made it home alive.
I was supposed to fast till 6pm but as early as 12pm I was already feeling dizzy as if the world was about to end.

Thank God for saving my live.

Causes of stomach ulcers

Stomach ulcers aren’t necessarily caused by one single factor. The decrease in the stomach’s mucus lining that leads to an ulcer is usually caused by one of the following:

An infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)

Long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen

Excess acid (hyperacidity) in the stomach, which may be related to genetics, lifestyle (stress, smoking), and certain foods

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare disease that makes the body produce excess stomach acid

Certain factors and behaviors can put you at higher risk for developing stomach ulcers:

Smoking

Frequent use of steroids (such as those for treating asthma)

Hypercalcemia (overproduction of calcium)

Family history of stomach ulcers

Being over 50 years old

Excessive consumption of alcohol

Most Nigerians have directly or otherwise embraced FASTING since the famous CHANGE took over.

Either through the formula 0-1-0 or 1-0-1

All thanks goes to Buhari, APC and the recession grin

I wouldnt say that's a lie, as our body processes meal differently. (I dont wanna digress) But, I've seen people who added weight after fasting.
And it also depends, some people after fasting wants to make up for all the meals they missed, during the day. What do you expect?

Also, you people need to understand that Fasting is not meant to make you lose weight. As a matter of fact, if you are having a Fast (Religion related), its meant to serve a purpose for the renewal of your mind/spirit. And not necessarily to make you lose weight. Ofcourse it helps in detoxifying and other health benefit the Op mentioned. But we need to look beyond the physical to the purpose and main aim we chose to fast.
