University of Ilorin is the most sought after university in Nigeria

- University of Benin only came behind in 2012

The Joint admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the most sought after universities in Nigeria.

According to JAMB'S statistics, University of Ilorin had the highest number of admission applications for any university in Nigeria between 2012 and 2016.
Premium Times recently obtained figure of 10 most sought-after universities in Nigeria in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

However, details for 2015 and 2017 were not included.

The statistics shows university of Ilorin leading the way as admission seekers' favourite for three years.

University of Benin only came behind in 2012.

Consequently, in all four years covered, UNILORIN had 411,340 or 25.76 per cent total applications for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

UNIBEN came second with a total of 331,178 or 20.56 per cent applications.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, had third highest number of aggregate applications of 305,790 or 18.65 per cent.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and University of Lagos respectively held the fourth and fifth places.
Imo state University, Owerri, was the only state university that appeared on the ranking twice, that is 2012 and 2013.

SMH.

This is what peace gets you.

Crisis up north has caused the great ABU to fall down the pecking order.

Who would have thought.

Whoever the sponsors of those crisis are should know that they come at a price.

Something needs to be done to salvage the situation.

On a slightly more serious note, house pls what do you think will happen if the federal government privatized universities?

UNIZIK has always maintained a position on the top 3 most sought after universities for decades. These universities have something in common- excellence in all parameters.

GREAT ZIKITES GREAT.
Re: JAMB Releases Most Sought-after Universities In Nigeria (check Details) by ThierryJay:
It is important to note that this ranking is not a true reflection of the overall standards for each university. There are factors that will influence how highly sought-after a university is. The most important ones include:

- Ease of completing academic calendar - many candidates would want to graduate without any form of delay at an affordable cost. This explains the preference for Unilorin as this is now its main selling point.

- Geographical distribution of standard universities - There are more reputable universities in the southwest (UI, OAU, Unilag, Covenant, FUTA, Unilorin, UNAAB) than in the North (ABU) or the Southeast/Southsouth (UNN, UniBen, maybe UniZik). So this means that prospective candidates are more evenly distributed among the SW universities due to tougher competition.

-Tough entry standards - Universities that are perceived to be difficult to gain admission into will generally have lesser number of applicants than other "come as you are" universities. This explains why Havard does not have the highest number of American applicants in the US. This takes nothing away from its premium status.

In short, OAU, UI, Unilag,UNN and more recently CU are still the universities to beat in Nigeria.

At the very top, OAU and UI are the real deal.
