I know how it feels when you are aware that you have the capacity to graduate with an excellent grade but could not make it due to financial constrait during your school days. But i want to let you know that there is a God that can properly postion a man in life irrespective of his qualifications. My elder bro was exactly in your shoes, he is so creative and intelligent, but he graduated with 2:2 due to financial struggles during his school days, but his story has changed now. God has blessed him with a well paid and secured Job. You must understand that - It is not of he that willeth, nor of he that runneth but of God that showeth mercy. This is the time for you to connect closely to God and disconnect yourself from every thing that is contrary to his will. Trust God with all your heart and never rely on your ability alone. Pray until something happen. If there is a man to pray, there is God to answer. God will change your story this season. He will put a new song in your mouth and make a way for you even where there seems to be no way. Trust him and stay connected to him. Shalom!

In Nigeria if you don't have connections, you have to struggle harder than those who have, jobs are reserved for the children of the rich, while for an ordinary person you have to be exceptionally good or depend on luck. The likes of the alakijas, tejuosos, waziri, cardoso, ribadus, sanusi, igbenedion and co, do you think their children suffer for anything? Even entertainment which was reserved for the children of the poor, the alakijas( DJ exclusive, falana( falz) adelekes( davido) otedola( DJ cuppy) are not leaving that too. Even football is included, but its not anyone's fault if you are not from a big family, but we musnt die poor. If not for internet fraud children of the poor will never count millions, even to get contract you must know someone or bribe.

You guys keep on repeating that same line over and over again. Success has principles. If you follow the principles, you will be successful and the number one principle of success is to seek specific knowledge.

Guy... Principles & knowledge are nothing outside school.

I have a friend with 2.1 in computer science, Masters degree... Knows virtually everything about computers... Lost his job last yr ... Till now has not been able to get another job.

Another friend works with those optic fibre laying companies.... Since January, no contract, no work.

You'll be thinking with all the skills , technical know how & connections, jobs should be pursuing you... But in most cases, it's exactly the opposite.

Even me, if you see my CV, you'll shake. 5 years now, no stable work. I get miffed when I see slow cashier's or dumb customer care officers in banks cos I know I can do the job better.

But who will give me the job?

How will I get the job?

I have applied & done bank trsts many times.... I wonder whether those who pass the tests have two heads.

It is not by knowledge or principles.... Not in Nigeria... Maybe abroad... Everything in this country defies simple logic

When I saw your story I smiled and cos I see another talent nagging and not seeking. Take a pause do you think smart people in ur secondary school or higher institutions days actually do lost it after school?? No. The problem is people believe too much in the book and not invention. Do you know still with your top notch brain there r ideas hunger is still yet to knock out of you?? Money is all around us bro, all you have to do is wake up and ask yourself what r people not doing yet that I am not seeing?? Let me tell you a little story.. I never for once have cause to be worried about life after school until I grad, travelled out for a while and came back home. Grading 07 I decided to test run my certificate, bruvs I was disappointed after two jobs. I ended up sleeping on a bare floor for two months, then one day I decided to launch for the unknown and Shawn working cos I was owned 8 good months salary, I created something very simple through the insight of God which could make 20k daily without leaving my room, from there it grew. Forget illegal means if you want a secured future. Too much.of focus on instant money clouds a man's sense of innovation. Think of what you can start up and let your family understand during the process. Thats my opinion

I grew up in a town where there were four government primary schools. Note that there was nothing like private schools there in those days. I was a popular pupil then, because I was winning inter-school competitions for my school. I was a class captain throughout, and senior prefect.

I repeated this feat in my secondary school, and became almost a household name in a town of over 50 thousands dwellers. My type should have worked harder to earn good grades in the university, and probably get retained. But I was hustling to fund the education, and consequently shared my time between earning money and lectures. So, handouts and photocopies were my learning aids. I graduated with second class lower.

My fame soared when, during my university days, my school principal invited me to teach finalists Mathematics due to dearth of teachers.

Fast forward to 2017, no job is forthcoming. A brother of mine from a different mother now owns a car and an auto-mechanic shop. He was known as a very poor student because people wondered at such discrepancy in IQ of related brothers.

To keep body and soul together, I'm doing a job that requires me rendering a service from door to door everyday. I make at least 25k in this job monthly compared to 13k these proprietors are offering me--their argument is that B.Tech degree is not suitable for teaching. It's a common knowledge that only the uneducated and street urchins do this kind of job I do now.

Now I rendered the service to a couple who happened to know me back in the days. I couldn't recognize them at first. The wife was a classmate of mine with four children while the husband was a senior student in our high school then. The husband recalled how the then English teacher used me to ridicule the SS3 students to which he belonged. They couldn't pronounce 'colonel' correctly. So, he shopped for me in JS1 and I got it right. Living in a city now, I didn't think of it that I could easily run into my contemporaries.

"Is this not Yemi?" he asked rhetorically. "Didn't you proceed to the higher institution? How come you are doing this kind of job?" he continued.

The wife reminded me of her name, and I recognized her.

If 17k is used for feeding, 2k for consumables monthly, how much will I be able to save to start a decent business? Note that responsibilities like parents and siblings in needs make it difficult to have savings.

Venting one's frustrations on keyboard these days is soothing, so I'll advice you be like me.

Adeyemi, pls hustle correctly. Don't waste your time , education and acumen on ridiculous earnings. Don't continue to make bad choices...every employer will judge you based on your previous earnings. Except you are lucky enough to join an already structured org in terms of pay, you will continue to struggle within 5 figures.

Resign and begin to search right. Register with recruitment agencies, follow Debbie's thread here on NL and spread the word among your friends & well wishers. It is well, I wish you success.

Thank you.

I have seen same condition as the poster you quoted. I've talked tire, given information, resources, links, numbers, Facebook names etc. Another thing is ambition and determination to move to the next level. Some just like where they are. Comfortable pay monthly and care. Nothing more is needed.

The one that pains till date is when I sent every job tests' questions and resources to a lad with a First Class in physics, dude didn't even say hello or thank you. It pains me when I see such good brains idle away teaching year one or year two students. I even disturbed him to apply to GE, PwC, KPMG. Nothing.

I have tried my best.

I dont know who he's talking about but he is damn serious bro, I know many people like that, I've seen more than a dozen of educationally sound guys that are now into societal perceived odd jobs.. A former coursenate of mine had 2:1, I mean deserved 2:1 not money induce 2:1, the guy is now a driver plying Lagos to eastern cities like Aba , Enugu, Onitsha etc. The last time I saw him I felt for him because his skin has change, his voice hoarse and thick like a typical Agbero, I tried to persuade him to add some "spice" to the way he speaks he replied... " Alaaye, won ma cheat me ni garage yi ti oju mi o bale" ( I will be cheated if I try to look and sound gentle in this garage) In a nutshell, I wept not for him but for this falling nation.

I feel your pain bro. The first step is merely to seek specific knowledge. There are more things attached, one cannot just stop at that, one must also be able to think outside the box. I have friends who are excellent programmers and companies use them to make millions and pay them peanuts. Most of them can write whatever you want them to code but they lack that ingenuity to think of an idea themselves and create it. Seeking specific knowledge as I stated goes beyond just knowing a scope. But, like you rightly said, everything in Nigeria seems to defy simple logic. It is well!

One day, I made myself a bowl of oatmeal, poured an iced tea, and headed towards my home office. Preoccupied with work, I tripped and spilled everything.

At 7:58:01 I was excited about a great new idea. At 7:58:31 I was mopping up a mess.

This is a trivial example, but it’s also the way life is. You walk through one door and a bucket of water falls on your head. You walk through another and someone doubles your salary. (Of course, most times when you walk through a door, you simply enter another room.)

Once you understand this, you end up with only two logical strategies:

1. When you fail, act as though success is following close behind: Don’t give up or give into self-pity. Don’t accept that your fate is bleak or hopeless. Just dig in and work your way back towards the light.

2. When you succeed, act as though failure is following close behind. Be as nice to people as when you were working your way up from the bottom. Be cautious with your newly-earned gains.

You may like to believe that you are 100% responsible for your success. Not true. The people around you are largely responsible for your success; never, ever forget this.

One last tip... when you spill your oatmeal, have fun cleaning it up.

My two cents bro....

Also b4 i forget, try and follow madam debbie on this forum for job updates. Her job update has helped alot of guys on NL and also to some pple i knw whom i passed the info to.
The wisdom here is deep

That's the thing they don't want to hustle well. I will be graduating with a 2 2 in marine engineering but I already have a place for my one year cadetship. I started sending out my CV's since January. I applied to over 100 companies before I got my first response. I only wanted a sailors job so I was kind of rigid to what I wanted.

I feel you man, I really do. However, this talk about regretting education is just silly. You seem like a young guy, how long would it take you to learn another trade?? A year maybe two ?? Do IT!

I believe school is the easiest part of our lives because we have a predefined structure. [Go to class, do your assignments, pass your exams.] You have to understand, Education doesn't guarantee a job, it elevates your prospects. So adding another skill, be it mechanic or carpentry or anything will elevate your prospects even further.

The thing is you are not a lazy person so I doubt it will be too much of a hassle to learn something new.

There is absolutely nothing shameful about your life(unless you do something under G wey we don't know oh). Better stop saying that. All this self pity is a weak man's behavior. Most of the success stories you hear about started in a far worse situation than yours.

Bros keep hustling, opportunities are everywhere, experiment. If the worse happens and it crashes try another. No matter the outcome, you will gain a valuable experience. Never give up, simple....

And please let us stop discouraging education because without education, our youth will simply have no future in this worlds..

Thank you, I wish you well......
