Sudden Cardiac Arrest:


Cardiac arrest is a sudden stop in effective blood flow due to the failure of the heart to contract effectively. Symptoms include loss of consciousness and abnormal or absent breathing. Some people may have chest pain, shortness of breath, or nausea before this occurs. If not treated within minutes, death usually occurs.

The most common cause of cardiac arrest is coronary artery disease. Less common causes include major blood loss, lack of oxygen, very low potassium, heart failure, and intense physical exercise. Prevention:
Prevention includes not smoking, physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight.Treatment for cardiac arrest is immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and, if a shockable rhythm is present, defibrillation. Among those who survive targeted temperature management may improve outcomes. An implantable cardiac defibrillator may be placed to reduce the chance of death from recurrence.

Signs and symptoms:
Cardiac arrest is sometimes preceded by certain symptoms such as fainting, fatigue, blackouts, dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, and vomiting. The arrest may also occur with no warning.

I witnessed that of Patrick Ekeng (Cameroun) when he slumped in the midfield.

Football or soccer is a sport that overworks the heart. Fifa needs to divide match into four quarters. That's 20 mins per quarter to allow player to get good rest and rest the heart. Much like NBA except they will get 20mins per quarter, plus full half time at the end of the second quarter.

And you just wonder, what stops the club owners from having some health insurance that provides such urgent cover for the players in the thick of action?

What stops the club owners from partnering with medical bodies like hospitals or NGOs that are health oriented in this line of equipping the dugout with kits and doctors or nurses?

Am even surprise that there's not more Nigerians on that list. Look at how we struggle to make it in life. The stress to get a bus to work or market or to our biz, then spend hours on the road because of traffic jam only to come home no light. Neighbour gen plus your gen causing noise and air pollution then robbers and kidnappers won't let you be. Then on Sundays the churches in your street won't let you rest because they have to put their speakers outside and not to forget those mosques that will start their own at about 5 in the morning. Omo. Those of us that are still alive should be grateful. Nigerians are strong people to go thru all this daily and still be alive.
