"Dear ABC,

Further to our earlier e-mail, the next phase of the
recruitment process for the FirstBank 2017 GT
Programme is set to begin. The process is scheduled to run in batches over the next six weeks; the first batch of candidates has been invited for this week.

Do not be disturbed if you have not yet received an
invitation. As we move through the process, you will receive a text message and an e-mail, containing the details of your specific schedule.

Please check your e-mail regularly. You may contact us through our Help Centre number: 01-4605115, 0703 307 2581 or e-mail: recruitment@hcp-ng.com<mailto:recruitment@hcp-ng.com> if you have any concerns.

We wish you the best in your preparation.
Regards,
FirstBank Graduate Recruitment Team"

From the above mail, it means I'm not part of the first batch that were invited this week, I would love to be invited like the 4th batch onwards grin

PS: Did anyone else notice the grammatical howler that HCP made in their email? grin Its in bold in my copy of their email which I pasted here. HCP, I hail o! grin
they are correct sir, they used "has" because of the "batch" which is singular in that sentence which came before "candidates". they could have decided to just state the sentence without including "candidates" and "has" will still go with it, something like " ...the first batch has been invited for this week". had it been they said "...BATCHES" then that's where they should have used "have" instead of "has". thanks

"Batch of candidates" is that a singular or plural statement?, I thought it is plural. Since obviously the candidates are several, that should ascribe it the plural form yea?

Its your own attitude that shouldn't be brought to the A.C. because even if he is wrong that's not the way to point it out to him. He has his opinion on what he thinks is right or wrong, you can correct and point out the mistake if you know it.

Hello PappyG, thanks for the update and the mail you dropped.. It takes a lot to do that and I'm really grateful.. If you've gone thru past experiences, you'd have been expecting the content of the mail to the exact of what you got.. Based on past experiences, the assessment entails 'could' entail A QUICK 20 QUESTION TEST (basic maths, simple and meant to test ur analytical skills, GROUP DISCUSSION AND PRESENTATION, INDIVIDUAL TASKS, COMPETENCY BASED INTERVIEW (one on one interview).. please note that all these are sourced from past experiences of previous GT applicants.. I hope it can be much help to y'all.. Thanks PappyG

sir, a "batch" is a collection of candidates which makes all the candidates under that "batch" to become one (singular) and that's why they used "has" not "have". thanks

So because someone expresses his opinion concerning the correctness of a statement on a forum meant for discussion you would be saying all this trash? The last comment I made on Nairaland was in 2008 but I have to comment today because of this type of your attitude.

Mind you that at the assessment centre, team spirit and ability to give others a listening ear would be tested, and you display high level of rudeness and unprofessional conduct, change from that bro.

Oga no be error. It's very correct. What if they had said "the first set" instead of "first batch" U will need to use has instead of have. The word batch is of importance in this case not candidates

The said the assessment is by 7:00am and candidates should be there 1 hour b4 the commencement of the assessment. How is that possible ooo
Re: 2016 Firstbank Graduate Trainee Programme by cloud9usher: 9:25am On Jun 13, 2017
In regards the argument about 'have' and 'has' in the HCP email, I think HCP is correct.

Even Microsoft Word flagged "The first batch of candidates has been invited for this week" as correct and "The first batch of candidates have been invited for this week" as incorrect grammar. You can find the photo attached. Sometimes in English, because it sounds better doesn't make it grammatically correct.

Sorzy1 thanks for the correction, you are on point, and to Mush, thanks for your input as well but I think HCP were right, I think they definitely typed this out on Microsoft Word first and it didn't flag it as incorrect grammar and they went with it.

And to you Niyinficient, I laugh at your parochial mentality, carry on! You really have a lot to learn grin

Bro, try understand his context. He isn't putting him down. What he is only saying is that such attitude may not go a long way in helping him. That is, despite the whole email body that was sent, the only thing he could pick out was a perceived flaw. It kinda (tho maybe wrong to you sha)portray an attitude that fights against the team spirit you rightly talked about. It's more like trying so hard to look for a flaw and forgetting to focus on the overall positivity. I believe that's what he meant by not bringing such an attitude. You also have a very strong point too. All the best to us.

Peace out

Part of the job of a management trainee would be to be smart enough to have an eye to pick out a flaw and the guy was right to state a perceived flaw in their grammar, I also didn't think it sounded correct when I first read the email. Take a look at how that sorzy1 guy expressed his view concerning it maturely but the niyinficient did his in a condescending manner saying he shouldnt bring such attitude to the Assessment center, let me give you some education Mister, a penchant for spotting a flaw is one attitude you need to bring to the assessment center for your information okay?

Let me help your guys. Some of you are lazy. There is no problem with the grammar. Recall that ''the process is scheduled to run in batches''. Therefore, the ''first batch'' HAS BEEN is absolutely correct because it is referring to one out of the numerous batches. Please do not isolate the preceding statement and do not allow the candidates after the first batch to deceive you. Thanks
