Stories. . .

When u reach office na there you go hear :
Our server has been down since two weeks
The capturing machine is faulty
NEPA Don disconnect our light

Bla bla

Like I said in the original post, I'll suggest that you select the option not to repeat the capture when filling the online form. Unless there was an error in your data capture when you processed the original licence, this is not necessary. That way, you skip whatever hassles come with the data capture process.

However, let's try to have some faith. They not only had light, they had a standby photocopying machine (N20 per page) so you could make any photocopies right there on the premises.

Things are changing for the better. Slowly but steadily.

Again, you did not include the tips for bribe. Have you forgotten we are in Nigeria?

This keeps coming up.

Again, I did not have to bribe anyone. Like I said earlier, do not go with the mindset that you need to bribe anybody. Just act like you expect everyone to follow the normal process and they will. Nobody even asked me anything for weekend or anything like that. Not at all.

(for those of us that have misplace our Driver's Licence before its expire)what is the the process to renew your Driver's Licence

I'm sorry I cannot answer this based on any experience. However the option (Expired but Lost) is on the form you will fill on the site so there is definitely a process for that as well. You will probably have to bring an affidavit or a police report or both.

Just go to the http://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org site and follow the steps there.

What of those of us without a car yet, can we start the renewal process already?

No one is going to ask if you have a car or not. Last I checked, you don't need a car to get a driver's licence. So long as they can ascertain that you can drive (which would have been done when you applied the first time).

I did mine three months ago without paying a dime as bribe. All officials involved were professional. Especially the FRSC. In fact there's a bold sign telling you not to pay anything extra than advertised.

Thank you for seconding this opinion. Glad someone else had a similar experience. Nigeria is getting better... gradually.

Op thanks for d education. Pieces like yours endear me to nairaland. However I'd like to make some additions/corrections
Its a process that cumulatively spans less than three hours altogether as opposed to less than twenty-four.
A five year renewal costs 10,350, not 10,450.
For those not favourably disposed to online transactions like me (I have had horrible experiences and can't be convinced otherwise), you have the option to click pay at bank, preferably with pay arena.

On a lighter note, that 1000 charged by VIO appears fraudulently compulsory!

My brother, na N10,450 commot for my account o! Maybe Interswitch charged the extra 100 bucks.

About the process taking less than 24hrs, you are absolutely correct. Even if we factor in commute, etc. it shouldn't take that long.

And I guess the N1k is another way for the government to make some money. All the same, I got some value for it. At least, I know one more road sign now grin

In Nigeria yes. I tried to rent a car with it in the US and it was rejected.

You can get an International driver's licence for use in US (while waiting for the National DL to be ready). The "big-name" car rentals (Avis and the likes) won't accept this but some smaller ones do.

What if your drivers license expired long ago. Mine expired since March this year. Will it be difficult to apply follwoing such steps?

It shouldn't be an issue so long as you still have the original DL. Just start the process as soon as possible.

I just clicked the link now and it works. Could it be your licence is not expiring within the next 30 days?

The current one hasn't even expired yet so it's a bit early to be checking for the replacement. I'm supposed to check back for the new one after 3 months.

I personally used carrentaltoronto4u.ca car rental service. As far as I know, these guys offer quite flexible rental terms and conditions.

and everyone.

While applying to have license renewed, the network messed up, I clicked the back button but then later closed the page and filled the form all over again. After filling the form, I proceeded to making payments and printed as instructed -- this was on Tuesday.

I was at the Road Safety office yesterday, my passports were taken and all was done. I got an annotated copy (photocopied) of the form I submitted carrying my passport, VIO signatures, stamp and so on.

The problem is, before I got the copy, the office stated I selected the capture option while filling the form on-line (I know I didn't) -- I can remember selecting NO on both occasions I filled the form. I will include a screen shot of the form for folks to point me to the part where it says I opted for re-capturing because the officer didn't want to point it to me on the form, he just stated I'd have to come back and pay some money for the capturing bla bla bla but I didn't debate, I said alright, collected the annotated copy and left with thoughts of coming here to seek some clearance.

Thank you so much OP, I followed the simple steps you enumerated here and it was so easy, I spent less than 2hrs at the FRSCand VIO office today at Ikotun Lagos.

It was exactly as you stated.

Please should I select Ojodu, Ojodu 1, or Ojodu 2 as processing centre. Thank you.

Pls how do you know when the original DL is ready for collection??
Do you just go to the FRSC office after 3 months to check if it's ready?
Or, do you get a prompt (say, an SMS) when it's ready for collection?
And, hopefully it won't be longer than 3 months smiley

I may not have answers to all the questions but you can engage the frsc guys on twitter here:

They seem quite responsive. All the best.

I did my licence renewal last week at the capture centre in VI (water corporation rd) and I was pleasantly surprised. The whole process took about 30 mins. I followed msanda's advice and took these documents with me:
- 2 passport photos
- 2 copies of the validation page (if you pay online, please print this page AFTER payment because it has to show the validation number)
- 2 copies of expired licence

I was given a written driving test that was really basic and took less than 2 mins to complete. I opted not to do the biometrics again so they didn't give me a temporary license, just photocopy of the stamped validation page.

In total, I paid N1500 extra: N1000 for the CD and N500 verification fee (I think the person duped me o because there was no mention of any fee here).

Wow. Followed your advice and it was just on point. The whole process took less than 30 minutes since I did not need to recapture.

Thanks alot.

The only challenge with that option is that you need to take the test with the VIO yourself.

You write so well!

And your posts are highly educative.

I'm already behind schedule in renewing mine as the expiry date is few days away. Wish I'd started earlier.
