Only few villages in my state mandate the groom to spend the night with his 'bride' though. Sickening and yet many are still living together in Lagos without having done any marriage rites. The high bride price is what deters some people though. In my state, you perform a knock on the door, intro, negotiation before the traditional marriage. God help the man if the intended wife is the first daughter with a good education or has been knocked up, more expenses and goats.

Some will have the money to properly go seek for a lady's hand in marriage but instead they'd rather keep birthing children while keeping the lady's parents on hold. This one is lucky she died while in his house 'cause in most cases of Babymama and Babydaddy the child belongs to the woman's family if her bride price isn't payed. The child has nothing to do with the guy's family. Some traditions serves as checkmate to moral decadence.

I meant doing marriage registry without the traditional marriage stuff... the family of the lady threatened him because he wasn't married by law, if NOT the police would not be able to detain him... the issue would be with the private hospital where she died.

What of if the man is not having such money with him. What if if the man in question has money and can hire the best SAN to prove that he did not abduct the lady. All thus is just bulls hit. Just because the man is poor. Otherwise nothing go happen.

If they try this with any of Obasanjo's sons, they will get nothing. If you call police, police cannot arrest Obansanjo's son except he commits a serious crime and co-habitation is not a crime in Nigeria. I think the lady's family was angry at the guy 'cause usually the bride price of a dead person means nothing. Money won't bring her to life so why demand for 5m?, even 800k is too much. In my place they collect less but you'll do the burial rites. The message in it is don't cohabit so you won't be married to a dead woman.

If you cohabit with a lady and both of you will have kids without the man paying her brideprice and marrying her officially in the traditional way.
If the lady dies, before she is buried, the husband will go to her place and pay her dowry and brideprice.

sorry, in Igbo Culture, we believe in Reincernation! Both the dead and living are respected.
You must pay a woman's dowry and bride price as a sign of respect to her, her family and community.
Igbos respect marriage institution, no wonder divorce is very low among Igbos.
We are not "marry today,divorce tomorrow" type of people.

the dude is mischievous. if truly he is an Igbo guy,he should know d traditions of his people. in my place and most part of Igbo land, d marriage rite is divided into three. d idoyen nmanya, d mporo, and d igba nkwu. d idonyen nmanya is d cheapest. i n my place, I think is just a keg of palm wine and if u like , u add 4 or 5 tubers of yam.
