Information About Calcium Carbide for Pineapple Plants

You can force stubborn pineapple plants to fruit using calcium carbide.
Although enjoyed everywhere, pineapples (Ananas comosus) are tropical fruits that grow only outdoors only in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. Due to their limited outdoor range, pineapples are frequently grown in greenhouses and as houseplants in sunny rooms. Pineapples typically flower and fruit during the summer months, but are known for growing slowly and flowering or not at will. Although abandoned in favor of other methods by many commercial growers, home gardeners can still use the chemical calcium carbide to force stubborn pineapples to flower and fruit.



How Calcium Carbide Works
When grown in large quantities, pineapples bloom and ripen at different times. Even plants located right next to each other were sometimes ready to harvest several months apart. This created high labor costs for commercial growers and caused small growers to miss peaks in pineapple prices. Early 20th century growers noticed that all of the pineapples in their fields bloomed and fruited at the same time when smudge pots were used to combat frost damage. It was later discovered that the ethylene created during combustion in the smudge pots mimicked a hormone in the plant and created the uniform harvest times. Not long after, it was discovered that the acetylene gas created when calcium carbide comes into contact with water had the same affect as the ethylene on the pineapple plants.

How Fruit Is Affected
Calcium carbide works best when used on large, vigorous plants in good health. Forcing pineapple blooms stresses the plant and may damage unhealthy specimens, resulting in small fruit on small plants. The fruit itself is also altered by the process, though mostly for the better. A pineapple created by forcing the plant to bloom is sweeter than other pineapples, contains more fiber and has a larger amount of calcium. In taste tests, consumers prefer the sweeter taste of induced fruit to the taste of pineapples that bloomed naturally in their own time. However, forced pineapples have a shorter shelf life and cannot be stored as long as other pineapples; the acid content is also higher in forced fruit.


How To Use
Pineapples can be forced to flower and fruit at any time of the year. Calcium carbide is best used on cool, cloudy days since the acetylene gas released when it touches water can burn the leaves of the plant. To apply, mix three or four calcium carbide pellets into a cup of ice water. When it stops fizzing, pour the mixture into the center of the rosette whorl in the middle of the leaves atop the plant. If there is dew sitting in the whorl already, you may choose to drop the calcium carbide directly into the dew. Some growers simply drop the dry calcium carbide into the whorl on the plant and wait for the rain to activate it. Always wear eye protection and gloves when handling calcium carbide, which is an irritant. Use a spoon to transfer the pellets from their original container to the plant or ice water.

Where To Get Calcium Carbide
When it comes into contact with water, calcium carbide becomes acetylenes gas, which is flammable. Because of this, calcium carbide must be shipped under hazardous material regulations and can be difficult to find. Spelunking supply store often have calcium carbide for use in head lamps. Welding supply stores, hardware stores and military surplus stores may also carry calcium carbide. The chemical is also used in mole extermination, so check hardware stores and pest control supply depots if you are having trouble finding it. Calcium carbide is also available at many online retailers, but shipping may be expensive due to the need for hazardous material shipping procedures.
