OP,in Nigeria,no matter the course you read in school,it will still be hustling.
But the best us to go for a course that has more prospect and not yet saturated.
I'll advice him to go for Pharmacy or Physiotherapy.
A pharmacist in Nigeria has more opportunity than a medical doctor. Infact, relatively, they're more comfortable than medical doctors.
As for physiotherapy, make sure you reach the very zenith in the field; that way you'll be highly sought after.

MLS is medical laboratory science; i think the guys that carry poo and urine. But if provides better living for him, why not?

Your senses have long been depleted. Just imagine your crude way of displaying hyper-ignorance of the MLS profession & yet you list it as one of the possible options for your brother. Smh

Before u quote me, take out time to google Medical Laboratory Science & help your plastic brains understand better.

Medicine anytime any day. have you ever seen an unemployed qualified medical doctor before ? they all get jobs even in this Nigeria, except for some if them that got the MBBS certificate from countries like Russia, Ukraine, cyprus and other countries that produce half baked medical doctors all in the name of the dollars they would pay as foreign student.

For pride -MBBS
For job opportunities- Nursing
For immediate Self employment -Pharmacy.
I have all three in my family

Physiotherapy, very important but undervalued in naija and less chance of easily get job abroad.
I don't have any in my family.

I don't know what is MLS.

true bro... Physiotherapy is grossly undervalued in Naija. but by and by... go for passion and not money.

If he ensures to be really good at whatever he does, he'll make a good living from it. He should study whatever course interests him most... The fact that there are unemployed doctors doesn't make him a potential one. There is no hospital that will refuse the free services of a doctor, with that he would get the required experience and if he's good, the hospital will do everything to retain him. That's if he finds it difficult getting a job on graduation. Most times we want things handed over to us on a platter... that rarely happens in real life.
But trust me, if he's determined and as brilliant as u say, he'll do just fine irrespective of what he studies.

Thanks for your contribution.

Two medical doctors in my family right now have no job. That is a sufficient clue for us to have a rethink.

@the bolded: how will the doctor survive in the meantime while he/she is rendering free services. I understand the concept of rendering free services but for how long, and how do you get fed in the meantime?

You read MBBS for the money obviously & now you are frustrated coz your permutations didn't fall in place?
MBBS is a calling & that entails sacrifice & humility. MBBS is not a route to escape poverty but it guarantees a comfortable life. But if you want to rub shoulders of wealth with those in biz coz u are a Dr. then, your doom & frustrations will be chronic.

Now, you think studying pharmacy is better right?
Oga go write Jamb again na e Neva too late, try put UNIBEN as your first choice. Mtcheeeww

For the people that doesn't know or have limited knowledge of what MLS is , MLS is Medical Laboratory Science. These guys (MLS) are the people responsible for unraveling the cause(s) of your ailments anytime you visit the hospital before a Dr would prescribe drugs, a Pharm dispense the drugs and the nurse administers the drug or treat the patients. All of them work together in the health sector to achieve same aim which is saving life.I want to disagree with the general perception that there are no employment for Drs, Pharm, MLS etc in Nigeria. Your uncle's case might not be your own because you don't have the same destiny. But have it in mind that the primary aim of studying any health related courses is to save life, money is secondary and when you're good in what you are doing the sky is your limit and you can create a niche for yourself.

There r a thousand nd more of unemployed doctors, naija trained, the rate of under employment is also alarming where someone will be paid 70k for a month , nd am talking from experience, I won't even want my child to study nd practice medicine in naija,

Are you for real?
Are you in Nigeria?

Medical doctors no longer get jobs like that without being very very connected. Ask around. Even after fellowship, there are no jobs waiting around for them. That, is the reality in Nigeria right now.

I appreciate your submission nextprince. It's just spot on. As a bright student, my brother believes medicine suits him, and especially because medicine is prestigious. However, he is (we all are) being forced to reconsider that, with so many doctors being unable to get job in the country. I don't know what the situation is for pharmacy... I don't know many pharmacists, except that some said pharmacy as a course is a lot tougher than medicine. That challenge is what is now making him consider pharmacy as a good, if not better option. But I'm concerned if he will be able to make a good life as a pharmacist.
MLS is medical laboratory science; i think the guys that carry poo and urine. But if provides better living for him, why not?

Medical laboratory scientists don't carry poo and urine. That's was an insult to them. You can easily google up their job prescription.

I advice he goes for any of the courses he is passionate about. If he wants medicine he should go for it, that some people have problem getting jobs (hard to believe, they are probably underemployed) doesn't mean he would have same fate.

That should tell u much already. Medicine still and will forever supercede all of them. If he is as bright as u say, and u want a real challenge to that gifted brain, Medicine is the greatest test and challenge. Better opportunities wen u read Medicine, more prestige, more respect, more nobility.......name it. The fact that Doctors are not treated well in Nigeria does not mean they are not treated better elsewer. Medicine is still ahead of all those other choices abeg. Sorry please but what makes it the hottest?
as a medical laboratory personnel starting from lowest level in a standard govt hospital you are suppose to be collecting a nothing less than a 100k.
Morealso most of these microbiology, biochemistry, biological science graduate are coming back to offer these course because they can't work in any lab they dare not open a private lab, what makes you think unilag starts offering the course, the only problem is the money to run the business if you want to open a private lab, cos it requires a high capital, and if you save to open one you won't regret it. After this mls now there will still be DMLS doctor of mls those One's will be earning up to a doctor's salary or even more

Brother, I am a pharmacist,...I can boldly tell you pharmacy is the best, its outright employment if you r looking at it from that angle and there are many fields of pharmacy you can fit into from the community to hospital to industrial to research to educational... I as a person with zero experience after my last paper started working in a community pharmacy with 50k per month...and you dnt need connection for that self..so there will never be a period where you r jobless till you labd your dream job or set up whatever business you want to venture into
And like what you know...its easier being an entrepreneur because that licence carries weight...

Meanwhile lemme go nd lend a college 5k to travel to lag in search of job, someone who graduated 2013.
