All those specialties are very different
Medicine and pharmacy are the toughest.

There's always a job in medicine, except you are not ready to go far.
Medicine is most lucrative.

Nursing is also good, but mainly a female profession, but if you don't mind working with many females and being called sister.

There's always a job abroad for doctors and nurses. So you get cheap education in Nigeria and go abroad to work easy...lol, like me, i trained in ibadan and am now working in UK....without student loans, and my parents are very ordinary folk!!...Pharmacy is very tough to study, i think more difficult than medicine even...The others courses are nonsense and i don't even know why you are comparing....its like saying you don't know if you want to buy G-wagon or bicycle

Boss sorry to bother you , I have a friend who has an OND in Lab . Tech and my friend intends going for HND and subsequently MLS please I will like to know what the course entails and the career prospects.
La waste of time going for HND

BTW, POLY OR Sch OF HEALTH TECH?
I advice immediately after his OND in poly, that frnd of yours should just resit for JAMB again then, try applying for MLS into UDUSOK

Why I chose udusok is because, they give admission easily into MLS once you meet the cut off. But the stress after admission is left to the person.

Admission to MLS = simple
After admission to MLS = work start

that friend of yours should just for MLS, directly. even though both mlt and mls works in the lab, the mls are paid more than mlt with the fact that they work less, and also we are being made to understand that as time goes on,mltechnician will no longer be needed in the lab, like they did for Mlassistant, we will only have mlscientist.

just click on this link to see universities that offer the course but please don't choose lautech o. That link is mls council of Nigeria site. if you want to go to private university with your ond it is as easy as joining a church, but that federal uni own depends on your gp minimum of 3.0 and who can help you with it, just get a direct entry form, but you will start from 200lvl http://www.mlscn.gov.ng/?page_id=69

Medicine first - Attractive income, Prestige, Carrier fulfillment at treating others, Highest paid. D fact DAT ur 2 bro had job issues doesn't mean he will. Job is easy at north

Nursing- Easily employed, Carrier fulfillment, Personal Private practice.
Cons..
Errand staff for doctors
Dirty but fulfilled work
lowest paid out of d 5 courses u mentioned
Don't really like it for guys.

Pharmacy - Easy employment, same salary scale with MLS and Physiotherapy last time I checked at my state. prestige, Most easy work as they just sit down and dispense drugs already stated by doctors. They stand up in few cases wen dey need to pick up some drugs. Carrier fulfillment, Private practice, Many Sectors to work apart from hospital.. Not easily talked down by doctors unlike nurses.

Medical lab science MLS - They are the backbone of medical field. Huge Carrier fulfilment as they diagnose and detect all anomalies and infections going on in our body by using our bodily fluids e.gblood. Private practice, Easy employment..
Highly paid, 100k isn't too small for a start, Most pay more depending on the medical centre

Physiotherapy- Prestige, easily employed..

Dentistry- - Highly paid cos its same salary scale with doctors, Low request for job employment- How many are removing teeth?. Low patronage in private practice.

Radiography- hmnn... High exposure to radiation which can shorten once life..
Good salary.. Normal request for employment with my own view cos most people don't study the course. Private practice not pronounced except at diagnostic centres..

Vetinary med- - same year in school as medicine, why not study medicine instead... Sells well abroad as they have more pets... Low request for employment. Private practice.. Related to medical in course of study at school but agric related e.g animal health to the outside world

....,........Not everyone will work in a hospital, adding MSC and PH d will be added advantage as u can divert into academics and become a lecturer.

It's on the 4th page now but will still put in my two kobo as a doctor trained in Nigeria and now working as a Aesthetic surgeon in Australia. Firstly what qualifies a good health degree. In the health field like the military there is a strict hierarchy. This is to ensure orderliness in the business of saving lives. Top is the medical doctor/dentist, followed by pharmacist, pharmacologists, physiotherapists etc. Then nurses.

So in terms of which is best in the health field obviously a medical doctor or dentist. A pharmacist technically cannot function without a doctor as doctors tell them what to dispense for the patients. Pretty boring career. Nurses, well, dirtiest of the list and least paid also but vital to the health field probably the most vital you will be surprised what a primary health nurse can do in the absence of a doctor.

So which is best economically. Well the health field in Nigeria is not lucrative. None of them are. If he is after money he should find greener pastures now before it's too late. But then in Nigeria of today which occupation really pays well. I think we are all in the same economic downturn boat. But should he insist on the health industry he should be humble and ready to serve with brain, time and compassion.

Doctors generally earn about N150k to about N270k, and that salary scale drops rapidly for the rest of the list.

Pharmacists usually don't feel compelled to work in hospitals so they have a wider job reach without the usual question 'But you are a doctor why are you working in a bank'. So that gives pharmacists an edge. However no matter where they work I won't expect them to earn more than the 130 to 200k margin on average.

Medical lab guys don't earn a lot at all. Some big diagnostic centers like Mecure pay their lab scientists about 100k. If you get this offer as a Med lab scientist you are doing ok.

Nursing is bottom but you can work in private hospitals and earn about 70k. And you can do private home care for some rich folks. So if you are smart you can actually be smiling home more than the doctor. If you are a pretty nurse then the gods are smiling at you. Those private jobs will come in flocks.

Radiography is also good salary scale between 70k to about 120k. Lots of jobs in diagnostic centers.

Abroad

Nursing is best if you can travel, followed by medicine, then dentistry and etc. Pharmacists don't earn a whole lot abroad.

Conclusion

If your brother is smart enough to pass fellowship exams and foreign board exams he should do medicine or dentistry and secure a future abroad he can return to nigeria as a visiting surgeon or consultant and demand 3million per elective surgery depends on procedure. While working abroad he can earn between $6k to $15k a month. This goes up as you advance your career.

Hello Nairalanders,

I have troubles advising my little brother on which course to choose in the health field. The family know that he likes both medicine and pharmacy, but we have two uncles who since graduating as medical doctors are having great problems getting a job. I want Nairalanders who have knowledge of the health field and their current job opportunities in Nigeria to advise us.

Which course should he choose?

Thank you Nairalanders.

No,being a pharmacist is good.....He will just spend 9 yrs.. How first going for pharmacology..then going for pharmacy.... 4yrs + 5yrs.. He could work for the federal government or state government...open his own pharmacy store..and can build his own pharmaceutical company where he can produce his own drugs...a pharmacologist can produce drugs but not licensed to sell the drugs...so they distribute it to a pharmacist to sell.. .a pharmacist just sells....drugs...they don't produce....so that is a piece of cake bro...

The best and most instructive response so far. Thanks a lot.
Btw, the more response I read here the more I'm personally liking pharmacy. He is already actively considering pharmacy; I think I have some info to encourage him to go for pharmacy. The possibility of private practice seems very attractive, especially for the Nigeria of today.

Thanks olusegxz. I received a mail from a pharmacist this morning sharing his personal experience. Based on what he wrote (quoted below) I believe you have a wrong information about pharmacists, and I even think may be earning so much more than doctors.

"Hello poyebad.
I came across a post initiated by you on Nairaland and I decided to share my personal experience to encourage your brother. This experience is not just mine, similar pattern is experienced by pharmacists all around the country. Pharmacists who are ready to work and not the ones who are comfortable with the meagre salaries being offered them both in the public and private sectors. Even if you're receiving #300k monthly as a pharmacist, it still qualifies as a pharmacist. The pharmacist is trained to function as a healthcare provider and at the same time as a businessman. I make bold to tell you that you cannot find a pharmacist who satisfies both aspects of his training that is not outstandingly wealthy. I worked briefly in a hospital and after just six months I decided to work as a pharmaceutical rep where my monthly target was in excess of #30,000,000 monthly. That's what set me thinking: why help another to make #30,000,000 monthly when I have all it takes (except the capital at the time) to make the same for myself. I built a little capital from working for the company from salaries and commissions. After three years working for the company and about seven years ago, I set up my own community pharmacy. Right now I have an allied production industry that produces about 23 products. My average cumulative daily sales (from the community pharmacy and from the production company) is approximately #57,000,000 (calculated for the first half of the year 2017). While I am not going to give you an idea of how much of that I pay myself as income, I believe this information should help you convince your friend.

Let me conclude this way: very few professions have the capacity to make you super rich in Nigeria. One of them is agriculture, the other one is pharmacy. Make no mistake about it, medicine can not provide you this kind of financial edge, except few exceptionally business savvy doctors who have learnt to step outside the comfort of their meagre comfortable salaries and into the world of medical business. In the end it makes not much difference what your friend decides to study. The more important factor is the kind and quality of person he is. If he is the salary type, then medicine is good for him. But if he is the type interested in building financial empire, then pharmacy is what he should go for.
