As the registration war between the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and Architect Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) continues, over who is qualified to carry out pre-registration evaluation for Architects in the country, Nigerian Architects have been thrown into a state of quandary forcing them to sit on a precipice following the issuance of two counter-directives by both bodies at the peak of the practice and regulation of architecture in the country.

Private investigation by the The New Diplomat reveals that the registration saga which borders on who has the statutory powers to evaluate and register would-be professional Architects in the country has been in the cooler for a while now, until a recent directive advertised in the Guardian Newspaper of Monday June 5, 2017, page 46 by ARCON asking Architects seeking license to practice as registered Architects in Nigeria to apply for a certain Architects Competence Programme (ACP 1.0), a directive seen by the Institute, as an affront and encroachment on its statutory functions and responsibilities as the body saddled with the evaluation of Architects in the country as part of registration and licensing process.

Most professions in nigeria have two institutes I.e Government controlled for their own professionals and private practice controlled for contractors. The minister has the power to amend and sign the laws,codes,conduct of these professionals as the case may be favoring government institute. These problems is as early as nigeria

NIA is not a REGULATORY BODY. It is an association of Architects. Association of individuals with common interest to seek the well-being and mutual knowledge dissemination/sharing of its MEMBERS through organizing of conferences, symposiums and lecture series etc. -the keyword here is Members.

On the other hand ARCON is the REGULATORY body for the profession saddled with the responsibility of regulating the practice of the profession and granting of licences to graduates of architectural schools to practice the profession of architecture as ARCHITECTS. Hence an Architect certified as an Architect by ARCON is at liberty to ignore membership of NIA or join the association if he/she so wishes.

NIA and ARCON frustrating Nigerian Architect since 1973. They both need a total over hull. The old minds are the problems. My personal opinion.

The number of registered civil Engineers In Nigeria are over 3x the total number of registered Architects Y.
