I was so excited. I could boast of being a grandmother now. Liam watched me dance around the room a million times with sleep eyes. I packed my bag,happily humming to tunes I was forming in my head.
“Oga,sleep na. Your eyes look really heavy.”
“It’ll look like I’m unconcerned about my daughter if I do that. I don’t know how to dance like you.”
“Everyone knows you love Kara so go to bed.”
“Why is your bag so full? Are you spending eternity there?”
“No baby. It’s just simply important to pack plenty. Go to bed,you’e dropping me in the next few hours.”
He slumped on the bed and took off. I was just too excited to sleep at this point. Pete had sent the pictures and my baby looked so adorable. After packing,I sent text messages to Mille and Rachel. They had to come spend more time with Liam since he would be lonely due to my trip.I booked a seven o’clock flight online. I spent the remaining time I had putting the house in order and making breakfast for Liam. I had my bath and woke Liam to do same. He didn’t want to have breakfast yet since he felt it was too early. We set out for the airport and I gave a long list of do’s and don’ts.
I was probably the first one to check in. I silently prayed for the plane to take off on time and God answered my prayers. They were right on time. Before I took off,I had called Pete to let him know so it was no surprise when we landed and he was waiting right there for me. He offered to take me home first but I declined as quickly as he suggested it. All I wanted at that moment was to see my baby and her baby.
As we walked into her room,tears stained my eyes when I sighted her doing what I had never been given the opportunity to do. She was breastfeeding her baby. I stood frozen at the door for some minutes before her voice brought me back to the present.
“Mummy!”
“Yes baby.” I blinked back the tears and walked over to her side.
“I’m so glad you’re here. Carry your grandchild.”
“I will. Allow him finish first so he doesn’t cry. How are you darling?”
“I’m fine mum. I still feel a bit sore though.”
“You’ll soon be okay love. I’m so happy for you.”
“I thought I was gonna die mum. The pain was just so indescribable.”
“And my hand still hurts from all the gripping.” Pete put in.
“I was training you for your wife’s turn.” She defended and laughed. “Mum you can have him. He’s sleeping already.”
I took the baby from her and rocked him gently in my arms.
“Mum won’t you sit?”
“The joy I’m feeling hasn’t reached my legs fully so let me stand.”
She smiled at me. “He’s been sleeping like this for long. He just wakes up to suck once in a while.”
“It’s natural. You know he too was working really hard to come out while you were pushing.”
“Yeah right.”
“I hope you’ve both had a bath.”
“Yes mum. I took breakfast too.”
“That’s good dear.Congratulations. Your dad still has work to do at Uyo,that’s why he couldn’t come with me. He’ll call you soon.”
“Alright ma.”
“So have you given him a name yet?”
“Yes mum. I gave him both English and Ibibio names.”
“Great,let’s hear the names then.”
“His English name is Tristan while his Ibibio name is Abasiofon.”
“Aww, sweet names. My little Tristan.” I pecked his forehead.
“I’ll be right back mum. I need to use the restroom.”
“Alright baby. Pete please help her get down from the bed.” He helped her get down,then he excused himself from the room. I was left with little Tristan and before long the tears came again. If not for my foolish mistake,my womb would have carried children.
“Mum,why are you shedding tears?” Kara asked. I didn’t hear her come out of the restroom.
“I’m just happy pumpkin. I’m happy for you.” We shared a side embrace because I was carrying the baby.
I stayed with Kara for a full month and I took her back with me to Uyo. Pete volunteered to manage herr boutique for her and take care of other things that would need her attention in Abuja. Mille,Rachel and Liam were so happy knowing I was able to convince her to travel down and stay with us for a little while. We argued a bit when we arrived. I felt the father of the child should know about his child but Kara bluntly refused to tell him. She claimed her child wouldn’t be safe once his father knew about his existence. She promised she would inform him when the boy must have been up to a year old. I still didn’t think it was a good idea. I asked Liam to talk to her because I obviously wasn’t getting anywhere with her. She seemed a bit more hard headed than I knew her to be. That old feeling of being a failed mother started creeping in slowly once again.

finally I'm here, I started this story when I was out drinking buh I didn't know I was crying when jamille and jason mother died until my husband tapped me to ask if I received a text message with bad news ....seriously I didn't know what to say for some seconds before telling him its just a story, he really felt for me that I was crying in public bcoz of a story
