Re: Information Thread for International Postgraduate Programs by Nobody:
Please I need some help in choosing an area of specialization for my master's program (on full scholarship in a foreign university). I am thinking of choosing a field, which is not saturated, where I will be able to make new contributions to knowledge. Specifically, I want to go into a field where I can use the knowledge and expertise that will be acquired from my postgraduate studies to solve problems in this country.

As a graduate of Physics aged 29 years, I am quite good at Mathematics and Physics. During my studentship in UI, I didn't do Chemistry or any course related to Biology. But I am also quite good at these subjects (O level).

Owing to the fact that Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are my strengths, I am thinking of pursuing my master's degree in any of the following:
*Medical Physics
*Biophysics
*Geophysics
*Particle Physics
*Chemical Engineering.

I plan to seat for TOEFL around July or August, and will register for GRE around November. After writing these exams, I intend to send an application for admission (with scholarship) to schools in US, UK, Canada, etc.

If I wrote the aforementioned exams at those times in this year, would I be able to meet up with the admission procedures for 2018 fall semester, which start by September every year in foreign schools?

When do schools in US, UK, Canada start accepting applications from prospective international students for a new session?

By God's Grace, I plan to do my master's program and PhD studies abroad, practise there for some years and return to Nigeria.

I believe I am more versed in application to schools in the USA so I'll comment on that. Firstly, 3 months of assiduous prep should suffice for your GRE. TOEFL shouldn't take more than a few days if you have a good grasp of English language. Try to take your tests earlier so if there's a need to retake, you'll still be on track.

Many schools in the US have fall and spring semesters. I'm guessing you'll be applying for Fall 2018. Most schools I know have their application window open around September and it lasts till January for you to be considered for funding. I learnt that the earlier you apply, the better, however, this might not hold in all cases.

It will help if you check threads on Nl and other websites like yocket, the gradcafe, and the likes to have a proper understanding of these things.

You're doing a good job by the way! This thread is amazing.

As a master's student, schools don't expect you to "make new contributions to knowledge." In the US, for the most part, you're essentially taking advanced courses in your field, and then completing it with a final project (which you'll work on for two semesters or so). If your goal is to eventually expand the frontiers of knowledge, then apply for a straight PhD.

As a BSc Physics holder, the default program is a PhD Physics program. With that, it becomes easier to get into good schools, and your options after graduating with a Physics PhD abound. It takes a lot of brainpower, sweat and grit to complete a PhD, talk more of a Physics PhD, so if you can get into a 'target' school, employers would be trying to lure you to take job offers.

You can work in investment banking, academia, consulting, or pretty much any field where advanced quant and analytical skills are needed everyday. Oh, and software industries too.

You'll need to find out the dates and deadlines for each school you're applying to. But the rule of thumb is to get all your app documents in 9 months to your enrollment.

There's a plethora of scholarship opportunities for Nigerians. It depends on your WAEC, SAT and a couple of other factors.

It depends.

I know I'm supposed to say YES, work hard, submit your WASSSCE results, take the SAT, and expect those funding to fall on your laps. But first, I'll lay down the facts, and let you do the math. By the way, this applies to US undergrad schools.

Only FIVE US schools offer need-blind and full-need admission to incoming International undergrads. They are MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Amherst. In other words, these schools would admit you regardless of your ability to pay. And if you do get admitted and can't pay the full price, these schools will give your scholarships and aid to make up the difference.

In other words, full funding; or generous financial aid.

How many international students from over 80 countries do they admit each year?

Harvard admitted 234 for this coming fall, 132 enrolled at MIT last year (no data yet for this year), 228 for Princeton, and 38 for Amherst. No data on international enrollment yet for Yale. So, you get the idea.

At sticker prices of $63 000 a year at Harvard, $58 240 at MIT, $61 160 at Princeton, $66 445 at Yale and $73, 250 at Amherst, you start to wonder how these schools could afford to admit international students every year.

Well, for one, those are standard fees, and depending on your family's income, you might be able to get aid to cover some/all of the fees. And for the most part, the aid comes from American tax payers. It therefore goes without saying, that every international student must be worth his/her weight in gold! Whether that be in academics or sports.

It also means that, there's an international admission quota every year for each school. So that you not only have to worry about getting admitted, but also paying the fees.

This quote from the Yale admissions website for Int'l students interested in Medicine puts things in perspective:

It is extremely difficult for international applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States to gain admission to U.S. medical schools. State-supported medical schools rarely consider international applicants for admission, and those private schools that do accept applications generally require that international students place in escrow an amount ranging from one to four years’ tuition and fees (USD 40,000–200,000). There are very few scholarships available for medical schools in the U.S., and to qualify for U.S. government-sponsored loans, the applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident. International applicants who are considering a career as a medical doctor and hope to receive their education at an American medical school should think carefully before applying for admission to an undergraduate program in the United States.

So, what are your options?

You might be able to get some funding, depending on your profile. Or you should go for undergrad in Nigeria, do well, and apply to US grad schools. US schools admit and fund a lot more int'ls at grad school level than undergrad.

Good luck!

I must commend you for doing a good job here. Considering your background in Physics, I will advise you opt for Medical Physics or Geophysics.

It is commendable that you're planning to write GRE and TOELF, these two exams are important in getting admission and funding in the USA. So study well and ace the tests. Canada is another good choice as there are chances of you getting funding for your program and post study opportunities are fantastic. Getting a full scholarship in the UK is not an easy task. Aside from Commonwealth and Chevening scholarship, I don't know of any other major fully funded scholarship in the UK. Also keep your Saudi Arabia option open. I don't know much about Saudi and the chances of staying back after studies though.

Application to schools generally commence around September. But the earlier you apply, the higher your chances of getting funding. Also ensure you apply the one year rule for preparation. Schools in Canada and USA require application fee. Most schools will also require you to get a supervisor before you apply.

All the best in your endeavours.

Thanks for this. Valuable and to-the-point! I've heard good things of recent about the attractive post study work opportunities in Canada. Esp the residency permit for PhDs.

Hi!

I can relate to the picture. I need to ask though: why schools in the Middle East? Why not try a Physics MS/PhD program in the US? We could work on your profile together, if you want.

Thanks, sir.

A few weeks ago, I made some enquiries about the availability of scholarships for a master’s program in US schools from one of my ex-colleagues, who now studies in the country though not on scholarship. She stated that getting a scholarship is quite difficult for international students, that other than Fulbright scholarship, the other available ones are restricted to US citizens only.

I had the intention of applying to schools in the US, UK, Canada before those in Saudi Arabia; but from the information I gathered, scholarships in schools in the first three countries are hard to come by.

Even Saudi Arabia appears to have reduced the number of scholarships made available for international students.

After I chatted with my ex-colleague in the US, I went further to speak with one of my acquaintances that runs a master's program in Saudi Arabia. He informed me that scholarships from schools in Saudi are now limited; a development occasioned by the global dip in oil prices.

Another acquitance of mine also corroborated this claim, stating he has been offered provisional admission since 2015 by King Fahd University of Petroleum but no scholarship as of yet. He said the school promised to contact him when scholarship is available.

I have not been able to verify the claim of my ex-colleague, who runs her program in the US.
