Hello House,

Kindly advise me on which way to follow. I currently earn 150k per month and I am thinking of enrolling for an MBA in Unilag. My headache is I will have to pick the full time option because it is cheaper and has better lecture hours, which means I have to stop work. Classes are from 9am-2pm weekly. The fee is about 200k.
I am skeptical about the part time option because its classes are during the evenings from 4pm to 8pm. I live and work on the island(Ajah) and close by 5pm. My boss won't allow me close by 3pm. He might agree to close at 4pm but even if he agrees to 3pm, there's no way I will get to Unilag before 5:30pm(on a no traffic day) by public transport. And lets say I finish lectures by 8pm, with the traffic and all I might be getting home by 11pm or so(dangerous for a girl). And it will so tell on me because the stress will be too much.(I am already a Lekpa I don't want to disappear). The koko again is that the fees for part time is about 500k.(I just started earning 150k ooh and also ponzi finish my money at the beginning of the year. GREED. don't blame me ohh, many people fell victim with me).
The last option is the Executive MBA. Classes are on saturdays from 8pm to 4pm. The fee is about 2Million. I won't even go there.
If I say I should do another Masters course it will have to be a science course which are all full time.

My question is should I take the risk to forfeit my job and do my MBA? The forms are out. I want to prepare my mind before buying the form(N22,500). I really want an upgrade to my certificate. I also need money to keep me going because there is no one to lean on. Everybody is forming OYO. And I also don't want to regret embracing an opportunity now that I have money for fees. Pls do no quit your job. Jobs are quite difficult to come bye these days and considering your current earnings which is really comfortable. It was on this forum some few days back that a UK masters degree holder in Law was complaining that an employer offered her 35k as salary. You can imagine. Moreso an MBA does not give you any edge neither will it increase your pay after its acquisition.Fortunately am also in the procurement proffesional. I have a B.sc, M.Sc, M.B.A, C.I.P.S, M.C.I.A, F.C.A.I with over 10 years working experience but the salary isn't commensurate with the qualification and experience gained over the years. For you in the procurement profession I'll just advice you do your professional certification in C.I.P.Sin Nigeria or C.I.P.S UK which can be acquired with little or no stress if you want you globally accepted certification. With that you'll be ok for now while the masters can wait till when you're more comfortable.Your job first

Did you have good grade in your first degree?
Is your O'level à sitting?
You have not even started saving, learn to save atleast 30% of your income first, then budget on the remaining 70.
Dont live certainty for uncertainty.
What is even the assurance that Unilag will admit you for the masters?

Well, what's ur first degree course? Well, if u are opting for MBA, that means u want to go for a career in management. I) How viable is that? (2) I also think that considering the fact u are scared of forfeiting ur job, then save seriously for some years, that is if u are still young and probably put in for the executive MBA. I am 29 years old and I studied BSc.Geology. I currently work as a Procurement Specialist. I know that there are professional courses in Supply chain Management but I feel a Masters tops them. Well maybe i will just wait save up and maybe do CIPS

Sisto, lemme encourage you. I'm currently running my part time degree in UNILAG. Economics . It's expensive ooo, but I opted for part payment even though they charged me more for it. But it made it easier to pay for me because i'm not earning up to your salary for now.

My dear, in life, one has to make sacrifices of comfort for the time being. I'm currently in my 2nd year and no, it hasn't been easy. It's been God.

Story, story......

Last year, my first year, I had classes 5/6 days a week. Mondays to Wednesdays, 6pm- 8pm, Thursdays- Fridays, 6pm- 9pm, then some random Saturdays. Let me give you a bit of background here, I live in Mowe, work at Ikeja, school at Yaba then back home to Mowe. The flesh I was gathering disappeared because of that condition (was a size 8,now a 6, trying to get to 10 now) .

I sometimes got home around past 12am, sometimes to 1am; especially on Camp days.

Why didn't I find somewhere closer to stay? I didn't have female friends that lived close by. I couldn't bring myself to open my mouth and tell my parents I'm moving to man's house cuz of school.

Like I said, it is God's grace that is keeping me. Now, my lectures are just Tuesdays and Saturdays, so it's much better.

If you can, try and do both, if you are a Christian, ask for grace and strength for the journey.... if you're not, it's a good time to be.

OP, someone I know did a part time MBA program in unilag but she didn't quit her job, she waited for the right opportunity to use it, today she's a senior staff in a very good bank

I would encourage you to face your work, save money, and rack up experience cos its the most important thing in the corperate world. Take online courses via cousera and the likes or do professional exams. The only Nigerian MBA that can make a difference in your fortunes might be from Lagos Business school.

What is the guarantee that the money you have will run a full time program for you?
What is also the guarantee that your part time program won't affect your job?
What is the guarantee that you will get another job if you loose this one?

My advises to you are:

1. Be sure your future is secured before making critical decisions now. If the job you have guarantees you high level of job security, then leaving it for MSc isn't worth it.

2. MSc can't be the only way to upgrade one's self. You can acquire skills on the job and through self study. You can also run professional certification programs and write professional exams.

3. Even when you want to establish a business, you ought to be sure that the business has already began to generate revenues and has began to win over loyal customers before you consider resigning from your job. You may not even need to resign if you have competent hands managing the business and it can stand without your physical presence.

4. There are many MSc. holders out there without job, what will make you stand our from them? That special thing that makes you stand out from them, will become your defining factor. So if you do your MSc and you're just a regular guy that quit his job to build educational qualifications, then be sure to join the queue comprising of millions of jobless BSc and MSc holders out there.
