I will also counsel you to look into VOLUNTEERING... Speak up with your church/mosque members, that is a good way to start your networking.
Finally, don't look done on any job cos even a minimum wage job can pay your monthly bills. I talk from experience

@Ekpekus Thank you for your advice. I will look into volunteering as you have advised and will share my situation with my Church members.

Hi, I moved to the GTA in June 2015 and settled in Mississauga. I came with my whole family and my wife and I (bankers) started the job hunt also attending the excellent newcomers training with Acess Employment. After 3 months, my wife got several job offers in her field and accepted an offer from a multinational conglomerate which was bought over by America's largest bank and she's doing very well there, even training other new employees now. I got my own break after 6 months as I was focused on finding a job equal or higher than my last position in Nigeria. I got several job offers as well from top banks and finally decided to accept an offer from a top 5 bank in a senior position. A lot of people here who follow Canadavisa forum know my story and I'm a good example of favour and determination.

Don't let anyone tell you that settling in Ontario, Toronto or any big city for that matter was a mistake. There are Nigerians who came before us doing very well and many more will come behind and do just as well. Remember, the battle is fought, won or lost in the mind first of all and then the physical manifestation follows. Sure there may be those who are satisfied with playing in smaller ponds but there are also others who take the plunge and swim in big waters. Abraham left a small, humble beginning for great adversity to claim a big destiny, not the other way round. Same for when Joshua led the chosen into the midst of giants and they prevailed. It's never about the size of the dog going to fight but the size of the fight in the dog. If you decide to go to a smaller city and start over, it's good and fine as it's your journey in life. If you decide to stake your claim here and get your prize as God is doing it for those of us here, that's also fine. You can send me a private message to share some further support and maybe connect you with other successful Nigerians/Canadians on ground here so you learn and gain from them. It wont cost me anything to lift you up, it only glorifies God.

This really brought me to tears. God bless you abundantly blackbuddy. May God continue to uplift you.

Thank you. I would like to know more about;

-Cost of living,
-Housing costs,
-Daycare/schooling for kids and
-Opportunity for jobs

Background: We initially chose Ottawa for a number of reasons but concerns about the availability of jobs made us to second-guess this decision and take a look at the Greater Toronto Area, particularly Mississauga.

However, after reviewing the factors that I listed above, we consider it wise to start small in a medium-sized city and grow from there. We are not ruling out moving to a bigger city in the near future for better opportunities, but we don't want to start up where our settlement funds will be exhausted quickly as new immigrants while we are trying to secure jobs. Thanks in advance for your kind response.

In as much as trades are regulated here...alot of Nigerians have been able to transit into some trades like electrician and millwright by challenging the red seal exams, but the guys recording success are usually grads of polytechnics in Nigeria with some hands on experience.

There are lots of trades in Canada, best bet to get on google to get a list and check which one you think is exciting for you. Some men cant even change a light bulb, so electricity might not be an option..some dont have good hand to eye cordination, hence won't do well in carpentry or welding...lol.

Imo,welding, electrician(commercial, power systems, plt), instrumentation, plumbing, carpentry, millwright and sheet metal e.t.c are all good.

Trades are good across canada. In terms of construction, you might want to look at rapidly expanding cities/provinces or huge industrial areas.
GIS...The guys from my previous place of employment had degrees in geography or GIS, and some have a geomatics/surveying diploma.

Bro (I'm guessing u r a bro grin thanks s lot for the info. I have hands on experience with diesel engines mechanical and electriCal systems aND generators. My copr states Richmond as my destination city but I have a buddy living in nanaimo so I'm thinking I should stay in nanaimo and then after I settle I could move if I decide to. However I've been hea ring a lot about how alberta is great for the trades but also hearing that there have been a lot of job losses due to the oil price slump is really discouraging. I'm booking my flight for me and family next week and considering the distance between alberta and bc, I wouldn't want to land in bc (where i have a friend but I'm not sure of job prospects) and start looking for a way to move to alberta in a short time. Won't b funny. Pls advise. Also I'd like to challenge the red seal exams ... how do I go about doing dat and when can I start

You can land anywhere irrespective of what you have on your copr aslong as it's not pnp. BC is also good for trades and has a more diversified economy. In Alberta - most industries would be oil related. In BC, there are oil, pulp, natural gas, paper e.t.c. I use to know a nigerian guy working in one of the BC oil fields.

I was affected by the downturn too but Sask saved the day. The oil industry in Alberta and its economy is bouncing back if we are to go by the articles on cbc yesterday.. The farthest i have gone west is Jasper. A way of testing the market in BC would be to get on jobsites to have a feel of the market over there.

For the red seal.i believe BC has the simplest procedure in challenging the exams...you would need some reference from your previous foreman or supervisor. You can visit itabc.ca for instructions. Go to that page, select your trade, then ... download the program profile and guideline.

Due to the reference, you might need to start before you leave naija. Its take around 6 weeks for them to approve your application for the challenge exams and verify your references. You would also find PQs for your trade of interest. Due to your handson experience in mech systems and electrical systems..you might need to weigh your option on which one to go for....but you would need to prepare well for those exams..they are not a walk in the park. e.g For the industrial electrician, you would need to know some control and a lot of troubleshooting procedures...Good luck bro....

For some personal reasons,I only read and appreciate the contributions of members of the forum. I don't usually get involve on issues personally to avoid unwarranted issues on a faceless forum, I am not someone who who likes to make assumption on people I have not met in person. What works for someone in a particular province in Canada may not work for the best of brains in that particular province. So the idea that Toronto is not a city where one can make it is a total fallacy that can only be made by Nigerians.

If you can make it in Nigeria and Europe, you will make it anywhere in the world. It is all mindset. Please don't allow anyone to tell you that you can't make it in Toronto. If for any reason, you decide to move to another province on your own accord, that is fine by me. I have gotten offers from the same Alberta and refused them, yet I have still survive Toronto till date.We are all products of our imaginations, which sets our limits and otherwise.
I have worked in Financial services in Nigeria,UK and recently in Canada(with Scotia Bank) and still ended up dumping the Financial services job and acquired education on a "Recession Proof field", where I am presently working and also doing my business along side.

If you are business minded, you will make millions of Money out out of nothing In Toronto, based on your ability to see things others don't see.

Anybody in Winnipeg here?

I was a business minded civil servant in Nigeria and had a liking for management (Studied Public Administration)
I have always wanted to become a business development manager and would love to go the way of management here.

Though my cousins here are not enthusiastic about it, I feel there are prospects for me as I see a lot of management positions on offer. I intend to take a job as a management trainee while I look for management courses to take, while building my management and Canadian job experience at the same time.

What do you guys please think about a management career in Canada generally?

Two good heads, as they say is better than one.

Thanks for your kind and enlightening words...

It would be nice if you could please share tips on how to start your own business in Canada (maybe Toronto where you have vast experience). I'm leaning towards living in London, but not limiting where my wife or I would work/setup up business... Definitely within Ontario.

I am business minded and have always had my own businesses, which would keep running themselves even while I'm away in Canada.

Done a lot of research lately and I have decided to learn more on Supply Chain & Logistics Management. I really do not have any prior knowledge in the field, but I intend to get a diploma and do a small job on the side or voluntary work just to gain experience while studying. I believe the work experience and Diploma would help get a good job eventually or start up a business as I actually plan to own my own trucks... I learnt moving is big in Canada.

Thanks for your response in anticipation.

Hi everyone

I've been a silent follower of this thread since i discovered it some weeks ago and i must say it has been very fascinating (sometimes scary grin) reading the posts of my dear seniors here grin.

@blackbuddy , thanks a lot for being such an encourager on this forum. Please i need your advice seeing as i also have a banking background (core operations-settlement). I already have my visa and copr and would be coming to toronto in january. My greatest worry now is getting a job when i land. I'm coming alone and would be staying with family friends, but i would like to find my feet as soon as possible as i wouldn't like to overstay my welcome.
Could you please advise on courses i can take or things i can start doing right now that would make it easier to get a job when i land in january?
I would really appreciate a response please.
I wouldn't mind other people's input too (not just @blackbuddy). Please help a worried sister cheesy Thanks.

What a thread.
I enjoyed every bit of it.
Canada, from what I have read here is really a good and accommodating country.

There is this small story I wanna share with u guys here.

While in d uni,I was into biz. Was making money and taking care of stuffs.
One day a biz trip took me to one city.
I had my tfare going and coming with extra topping.
But things didn't go as planned.
My return money and d extra was used to redeem my goods and night was fast approaching.
To add salt to injury I have one scary test to write the next morning. And man hasn't finished cramming. Can u ever finish anyway.

I put pride aside and walked to two gents after watching them from far and got on my knees.
But first I showed them my school I'd card and the receipts of my purchase.

These guys didn't doubt me at all. Didn't wait for me to finish and gave me more than enough while encouraging me.
That was a very big miracle for me that day.
Luckily I joined the last bus of the day.

Sometimes life hit us hard when we least expect it.

All the best to u all.

Maybe one day I will holiday in this wonderful country.

I am still awaiting COPR but let me share what I have done: I followed all the "Big 5" banks in Canada-Bank of Montreal (BMO), Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), and Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD)-on Linkedin. I noticed that quite a number of Nigerians are working in these banks.

Next is to send connection requests to some of them incorporating the strategy suggested by @Blackbuddy. On professional certifications, I am still researching CSC. Let us hear from our landed immigrants.

Would like to hear from anyone with info or work experience wit any sector of the armed forces in canada. How does a migrant get in?
You need your citizenship to get into CA forces.

I've received it and ignored it. Ask me what you want to ask me here. We're all here to share info and learn.

Quite harsh and a little condescending. Emotional intelligence is key. We are all humans. My opinion though.
