my question is must we confess to priest? can we just confess to God maybe in our room or in the church
if we confess to God and not the priest, will the sin not be forgiven?. these are my ques

I am a member of one renown bible teaching church. recently, I'm living with catholics, I notice that pole used to gather at the father' house to do confession. this contradicts my own belief and also pose the question of if we confess to prirst, who will the priest confess to when he commit sin

There's nothing wrong in confessing to a priest afrerall in Pentecostal churches people do confess to their pastors.

It's not a must you go through the priest before confession.

A practicing Catholic should as much as possible go to confession as the ordinary means of forgiveness for serious sins even though he may have presented the same sin in prayer.


One can always pray to God for forgiveness of any sin but in cases of mortal sin one should as soon as possible avail of the sacrament of confession, it Isn't optional for a practicing Catholic.

Ubenedictus have done much justice to the topic. I will advice the op not to see confession as a burden. I believe he is like this because of his background but he should try to join the church fully and practice it because its just the natural means a Christian is forgiven of his sins even if we can still pray for Gods forgiveness. Confession gives us the assurance that our sins are forgiven because it was instituted by Christ. For one to make proper confession, he must have true contrition for his sins, confess his sins, receive absolution from the Priest and then satisfy all the penances given to him by the Priest. The Church is not teaching anything contrary to the scripture but as its custodian it helps Gods children understand it even better.

I think they still follow the old testament rules where people will confess their sins to a chosen priest (Aaron was the first), then the priest will offer sacrifice to God on their behalf. The priest must be blameless though if not, God will smack the priest to death and he will be drag out of God's holy tent with chains wrapped around his ankle.

But when Jesus died on the cross at calvary, the temple veil was torn (Matthew 27:51) which signifies that everybody can go straight to God without going through any priest.


But denominations still practice some laws and religion in old testament.

I am not Catholic but i urge you to respect their doctrine.

And as you said that you are a part-time Catholic, it's your choice if you think you don't need to go to their priest.

i didnt say what you said above. I said that we can ask God for forgiveness but sacramental confession gives you total assurance that your sins are forgiven because that is the natural means Jesus instituted for the forgiveness of sins.

God can forgive sins anyhow he wants, but the ordinary means of forgiveness in the new testament church confession and it is important for any catholic in grievious sin.
