Companies in the oil and gas industry do not really invest so much in look and feel. Most critically are those in the service sector. Once they have a logo, the job seems done for them.

When you ask some of them, the response is usually the same: “Why should we spend so much dong what we do not need. We are in the service industry and our clients are few and known. We are not in the mass market and may only work for one or two big oil companies at any point in time. So why should we invest in looking good when we are not an FMCG?

Caverton Group, easily one of the biggest indigenous oil and gas service companies in Nigeria was caught in this mindset. Its case was such that even two companies that make up the group, Caverton Helicopters and Caverton marine Limited had different logos.

You could say this is possible if they are managed differently and different clients. But the truth is they are in the same small, yet very dense market where everyone knows everyone and where the best option to maximise opportunities is through group pitches and cross selling.

It was perhaps in realisation of this and perhaps to challenge presented by new market and growth realities that Caverton has decided to do a makeover of its look and feel. As noted, it would be easier for the brand to take advantage of economies of scale if it operates a group structure which also has all communication, control and command elements fused. But more importantly, the company was also getting listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and as a result needed a uniform face.

The new logo, says Aderemi Makanjuola, Chairman of the group, “symbolizes the Bluton Compass of 3 blue colours which is built on Caverton’s brand legacy showing the indispensable rich deep-seated robust experience in the aviation and marine sectors capped with safety as number one brand value. The shape of the logo reflects a “cave icon” carved out of Caverton’s first alphabet, letter C. The letter C, which is turned 90 degrees backwards illustrates a cave that opens outward and upwards to its limitless environment while also opening inward to a ‘cavernous’ environment. It also symbolizes the rudder of an aircraft as well as that of a ship.
Apart from identifying the aviation and marine sectors, the Blue colour, Makanjuola continues, also reflects “safety”, core brand value which is further accentuated by the choice of White.

Reflecting on the need to weave all businesses together, the chairman revealed it was with a bid “to bring all businesses under a strong single “Mother” brand that enhances our brand strength where the individual businesses will leverage the overall strength of the “Mother” brand.

To announce it arrival as a brand of note, Caverton is looking to become one of Nigeria’s wholly indigenous oil and gas service companies to operate outside the shores of the country. Reports by Bloomberg already indicate the company is looking at taking its businesses and brand presence to jurisdictions like Congo, Mozambique, Angola and Ghana over the next five years.

Gathering the financial muscle to achieve this with minimal hitch is what the brand is at the moment working to add to the just concluded brand makeover. Already, the company has listed 3.35 billion shares at 9.50 naira each on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, says Bloomberg.. This would give the company, which provides oil field services for multinationals including Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA), Exxon Mobil Corp. and Total SA, a market capitalization of about 32 billion naira.

The company, which currently operates in Nigeria and Cameroon, plans to buy seven new helicopters and one fixed-wing aircraft by the third quarter to boost its aviation support services and also raise further capital as the need arises to fund further expansion.

Caverton is perhaps the only company of its kind quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Oil and gas companies, majors and minors for that matter, have shied away from the Nigerian capital market citing many reasons, chief of which is stature. The only ones quoted on the Nigerian bourse are downstream companies, especially those in petroleum products marketing.

What this means is that Caverton is going to be a trailblazer of sorts, a factor many believe would encourage others to embrace the market and thus boost activity. Caverton may also be opening a new vista for greater interest in the oil and gas sector by this move to be a quoted company. Most Nigerians do not just know how deep or even profitable businesses in this sector could be.

But with the results recorded by this brand for the 2013 business year, its stocks so quoted looks good enough to not only attract investor interest but also open the minds to greater local investments in the oil and gas industry.

For year ended December 2013, Caverton recorded a turnover of N18.7 billion, up from N16.13 billion for 2012. From this, profit after tax increased by over 40 percent, from N1.3billion in 2012 to N1.8 billion in 2013.

Only very few companies are still able to record 40 percent profit after tax in this economy. What would awaken interest, in addition to the refreshed brand identity are the opportunities and growth prospects ahead the company. Already, there are plans to add as many as seven helicopters in the immediate future. Maturing business tenders may also create the need for an additional 26 helicopters to manage three service support deals which also need as many as seven vessels.

This holds major attractions for a brand most people will soon begin to know and better understand its business operations.

Proserv has reinforced its expanding global reach by appointing a country manager in one of West Africa’s fast-emerging provinces.

Olu Phillips takes up the post in Nigeria where Proserv has experienced rapid growth in demand for its integrated services and specialist technology.

Olu, who has extensive experience in the African and international marketplace, will be responsible for overseeing the company’s operations in the region.

He said: “The market in Nigeria is very dynamic and the oil & gas opportunities are immense.
