Bose Ayeni and Folu Ayeni

Founders/Tantalizers

Tantalizers Nigeria, with her husband as CEO, shares her experience in starting her business in Nigeria. The first hurdle the couple had to scale to realize their dreams was the recurring decimal in the stories of all entrepreneurs.

That was 15 years ago. Today, Bose and Folu Ayeni have not only made Tantalizers one of the leading chains of fast food restaurants in the country, they have also listed it on the Nigerian Stock Market as a public limited liability company.

From just one shop eatery in Lagos, Tantalizers has spread across major Nigerian cities, rivalry the other known brands like Mr. Biggs, Tasty Fried Chicken, Sweet Sensation and a host of other not-so-popular ones.

In February 2010, Tantalizers forged a strategic partnership with The International Finance Corporation (IFC), an arm of the World Bank which granted it $7million in loan and took $1.5million equity in company to help take the fast food company to the next level and outwit competition posed by foreign eateries like Shoprite, KFC and Barceló’s in Nigeria.

Though Tantalizers has grown into a multimillion dollar company today, getting a loan from the bank was by no means the only mountain they had to climb to reach the Promised Land they now occupy. First, they had to deal with Shylock landlords.

Bose recollects that, “When we started we actually didn’t start with lack of location. Anyway, we were renting the premises that we were using. But along the way when we also saw that when you rent a property, our experience has shown that, for our kind of our business, you will have to completely redesign the premises to the level of the standard you want to set.

“And the landlord is watching you improve the state of his house and once your lease expires you can be sure that you will come tantalizers back to pay double. One, he is looking at the renewing the lease on the building; he is looking at how your business is doing well so that he could be a partaker of whatever profit that comes.

“Overtime we have had such experiences. The option they give you is that you can move out if you can’t pay and you would not want to move because you have already established your business in that location. After such experiences we also decided that maybe we should look at acquisition of buildings or land and build on our own rather than having problems of landlords.”

A strong will is certainly important for every entrepreneur, especially if you start business in Nigeria. No sooner had they decided to acquire their own properties and build than they had to contend with another challenge: land speculators!

“We faced problems with land speculators. You buy a piece of land and at the point you are about to build on it somebody would come to claim the land. And as we speak now, we have a similar case at a site.

“After paying, we sent for the soil engineer to start the soil test because of the kind of structure we want to build on it. It was an initial property but suddenly somebody came to say that they own the place. Unfortunate, it was the police. As we speak, we have not been able to resolve the issue and we are waiting for the authorities before any work could commence,” the Tantalizers boss recounts.

This prevalent problem of land speculators has not stopped the company from growing though. Even amidst growing competition from local and international fast food brands, Bose and her husband have been able to steer Tantalizers in the right direction of grow and expansion. Tantalizers currently has over 30 outlets in Lagos alone and a total of about 50 across the country. For some time now, the fast foods restaurant has been planning on taking its operations outside Nigeria to the US, UK and Europe.

However, Tantalizers’ growth has not been without fierce competition coming from other fast foods companies, indigenous and international. Competition and the challenge they pose to Tantalizers’ dominance is not an issue Bose loses sleep about; Tantalizers, according to her, is not resting on its oars in spite of its achievements and wants to continue to expand. Her words: “We have been in business for 15 years and we have seen different phases of competition.

“We started from where competition was largely local. We had a dominant or major player who was Mr. Biggs and all others. All others then were made of people like us, Tasty Fried Chicken, Sweet Sensation and we have lots of neighbourhood competitions.

“But overtime, we found out that a lot of neighbourhood operators were dwindling and some of them have shut down. Then all others are surviving. And in the last five years, we discovered that the competition moved from being local to international. We have had a couple of entries of international brands.

“We now have KFC, South African brands among others. The face of competition has changed, and demands made on local operators from consumers have also changed. It has changed expectations of average consumers.

Lady Kehinde Kamson is Founder/CEO of Sweet Sensation Confectionery Limited

After graduating from the university of Lagos, Kehinde Kamson got a job as an accountant at an oil and gas servicing firm. During this time, she was already married to a man named Sir Yinka Olusoga Kamson, and so, decided to start a side business where she sourced fish amongst fish mongers in Lagos. Her little business was called “Fish Mongers”, and she ran it for 5 years before she eventually shut it down because it was bringing in little to no profits, and was entirely unsustainable.

Without a large capital to start Sweet Sensation, her new entrepreneurial passion, she decided to start up from a shed in her family house, in 1994. This shed was located in the backyard of the compound, and was their gateman’s house. In this shed, she started selling ice cream, Chinese food, chicken, and rice.

The quick success from this little shed led her to open up a new branch in Lagos, and so, she promptly setup one in the Victoria Island region.

To make her fast-food brand stand out from the rest, she got creative by improving the ambience and experience in her restaurants and introducing a very diverse menu.

By the fourth year of running the Sweet Sensation fast-food business, she was able to secure a loan of 5 million Naira from the bank, which she put back into the business repeatedly to continue its growth.

Sweet Sensation today has over 25 retail outlets around Nigeria, employs over 2,000 people, and serves a wide array of dishes spanning over 60 different types.

Below reads the interview granted to Michael Akindele a co-founder by Forbes on MAR 2, 2015
Michael Akindele, a 30 year-old Nigerian, is a director and a co-founder of SOLO Phone , an experience-driven digital content and smartphone company focused on delivering the best content and services on the mobile platform to African consumers.
SOLO Phone, which was established in Nigeria in 2012, is an experience-driven mobile device manufacturer which aims to provide the best content and services to the African consumer at an affordable price. The company manufactures smartphones priced at $150, bundled with free music of up to 20 million songs licensed from Sony, Universal and Warner. SOLO also recently launched a Video-On-Demand App available to all Android devices in Nigeria which offers the latest Nollywood and Hollywood movies from global movie studios.
I recently had a chat with Akindele where he recounted his entrepreneurial journey and explained why he feels SOLO phones will give other smartphones a run for their money.
What’s your personal and professional background?
I was born August 29, 1984 in Washington D.C., to Nigerian parents. At the age of 2 years old, my family moved to Nigeria and spent the next 10 years in Ibadan. At the age of 12, my family returned to the US where I continued my education in Alexandria, Virginia. After graduating from T.C. Williams High School, I attended George Mason University in Fairfax, VA where I received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the Volgneau School of Engineering with a focus on Computer Science and Information Technology. I also received a minor in Business Administration from George Mason’s School of Management. While at George Mason I was a member of the Track & Field Team and competed in the hurdles and middle distance running events. Being an athlete on a Division I Track & Field team gave me the confidence I needed to take on events outside of sports and a chance to win. Two days after graduating from George Mason I began my career as a Technology Consultant with Accenture.
Michael Akindele
I gained valuable professional experience from being a Technology Analyst with Accenture. While at Accenture, I started working on a project, which quickly progressed and birthed The Apprentice: Africa. A business partner and myself successfully licensed an American reality game show from Mark Burnett Productions for the Sub-Saharan media market, which featured real estate magnate, businessman and television personality Donald Trump. I returned to Nigeria January 2007 and was part of a team that developed, produced and distributed the African edition of an 18 week reality show titled The Apprentice: Africa that had a strong following in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Walk me through your entrepreneurial journey so far. I know you worked as a Core Analyst at Accenture in the U.S, and then you returned to Nigeria to help produce the African edition of The Apprentice reality TV show. You were also involved in an animation studio before SOLO. Tell me about it.
While developing The Apprentice Africa, I gained hands on experience on producing TV content for the African market. I recognized the gaps and immediately started developing original content inspired by African culture, music and folklore. I recognized the media market was populated by an influx of content from Western markets with little commercial opportunities left for local content producers. We successfully produced a pilot for an original 3-D animated series titled The O Twins. However,we quickly learned the market for content distribution was very shallow. Outside of the cable TV market there is little to no room left for original content production. The cable TV market is limited to affluent consumers who can afford televisions at home. However, the majority of African consumers are unable to afford this luxury. This presented a challenge I was willing to take on. I knew if someone was able to successfully solve that problem it would create tremendous opportunities not only for the distributors but also for creative professionals across the continent. Today Sub-Saharan Africa is among the world’s fastest growing mobile market in the world, and is the biggest after Asia. The introduction of affordable smartphones, specifically designed for the African market, has improved the market scenario. Mobile broadband connections are now anticipated to quadruple from its 2012 figure to reach 160 million in 2016. This uptrend reflects the gradual change in consumer habits, as they gain their first Internet experience through a mobile device. This is the future of content distribution and value added services.

Yes, I agree totally. cool There should be a book series on these entrepreneurs, and a couple of TV documentaries as well. It is such a pity that people are so busy these days, but it is a project that I believe needs to be documented, for posterity. undecided

In fact the supply chain structure, in each of these companies needs to be explored, analysed, documented and used as case studies in Nigerian universities, especially at MBA level. The logistics & supply chain structure used to distribute Alabukun for example, has always fascinated me. It is going to form part of my thesis that is coming up. undecided

Agreed. Information here is too rich for a single online forum. And if it would be published in compendium, it would be a multi volume compendium.

Can talk to my publisher after getting a copy right permission from Nairaland. It is gonna sell like hot cake even in diaspora.

CC. Knh3 and others.

If Op can sift the whole thing and trim out the irrelevant comments. Then a manuscript would have crystallized. The thing can now be segmented into sections.
