Kola Adewale, Founder The Place

Meet Kola Adewale, founder of The Place, a string of hospitality and entertainment outlets that started out nine years ago in Ikeja, Lagos. Between then and now, he has established The Place Lekki and The Place Victoria Island, with an Alausa outlet in the works and more planned for the future. We bring you excerpts of an interview with this experienced business man as published by Thisday.

Kola-Adewale-the-place

Building different yet complimentary businesses wasn’t the plan in the beginning. The Place founder, Kola Adewale, admits as much. The first The Place opened for business nine years ago in Ikeja, originally as an eatery selling sumptuous meals that.

“That was what I could see making money, something I could start small and grow into,” Adewale explains. Later on though, the idea of blending the food with a lounge/ bar occurred to him. “It was later that the whole club idea evolved.”

In his mid-forties, Adewale is unassuming, soft-spoken, calm but witty. We are at his office at the Victoria Island outlet, the most recent of the three currently open. He doesn’t cut the picture of a club owner, especially if flamboyance is what you attach to a restauranteur cum hotelier. He looks like the cerebral type, a blue-chip company executive.

On why he left a lucrative daytime job for business, Adewale says:

I did 16 years with KPMG, an accounting firm that used to be Arthur Anderson in Nigeria,” he says. There was a year overlap between leaving his prestigious job and starting his own thing. “I started The Place in 2006 then left KPMG 2007.“ However, the conception of starting his own business was many more years before. He was gaining expeience helping others with their businesses.

“I started with the accounting practice and business advisory for small businesses from the early days, so my 16 years was primarily management consulting, which gave me broad exposure in the running and managing of businesses. It gave me confidence that I had the skills to run any business. I think the question was which one will be viable, which one I would be able to put my savings in as there was little or no support from the banks for a start-up,” he reveals.

“I felt the food business was doing well. The Mr Biggs, the Tantalizers, the Sweet Sensations, you could see growth, you could see expansion, the money was good.”

Three outlets already with a fourth in the pipeline is an indication of growth. Another The Place is soon to open at Alausa. “It’s going to be like Lekki,” says, indicating that this new outlet would have a restaurant, a club and rooms. Business must be good right? He chuckles. “Not overnight,” he counters, “but so far, so good. It is unlikely we would replicate this over four places now if it wasn’t.”
He explains why Alausa. “We’ve seen the market at the Ikeja Mall. There’s quite a bit of traffic.” The strategist in him sited The Place Alausa within a stone’s throw of the mall.

Adewale sheds some light on how it all started and the progression. The property in Ikeja was leased but Lekki was built from scratch, which explains the hotel on the top floor.

Yes, I agree totally. There should be a book series on these entrepreneurs, and a couple of TV documentaries as well. It is such a pity that people are so busy these days, but it is a project that I believe needs to be documented, for posterity.

In fact the supply chain structure, in each of these companies needs to be explored, analysed, documented and used as case studies in Nigerian universities, especially at MBA level. The logistics & supply chain structure used to distribute Alabukun for example, has always fascinated me. It is going to form part of my thesis that is coming up.

Beyond a research material, it could be useful for decision making.

Business growth

Pamela realised quickly that any education derived through persistence and hard work must show in quality of service. With the days of little beginnings at 61 Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, Tastee Fried Chicken now has thirteen branches till date.

Apart from being the Tastee Fried Chicken boss; she is the MD/CEO of Tastee Pot Limited (an outdoor catering outfit). She is the National President of Association of Fast Foods Confectioners of Nigeria (AFFCON), President, Olayinka Pamela Educational Foundation (NGO) and was a member of the technical committee that reviewed Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) code of hygiene practices for fast food organisations in Nigeria.[/b]

Pamela holds dear to heart, the philosophy of sharing and caring for the less privileged in the society and this has informed her philanthropic acts which reflects in regular donations of food, blankets, drugs and other items to orphanages, old people’s homes and other such bodies catering for the disadvantaged and less privileged in the Nigerian society apart from inviting them to her annual birthday parties.

This ensures the capacity to also produce competitive electricity in a safe and reliable manner over the long term. It consists of a gas power plant with 8 Gas Turbine units with an installed capacity of 335mw.

The Olorunshogo IPP Power Plant is a 335MW gas plant, located in Papalanto, Ogun State. It is daily operated and maintained by a team of Pacific Energy staff and boasts of generating 95% of its installed capacity evident by the recently concluded capacity test carried out by NBET

Pacific Energy also took over the Omotosho power generating plant during the sale, acquisition and privatization of power plants in Nigeria. This 335MW capacity power plant has been rehabilitated with major turnkey maintenance carried out on all of its gas turbines. Omotosho Phase I Power Plant (Omotosho Electric Energy Co. Ltd) is an electricity generation business sited at Omotosho Forest Reserve, Okitipupa Local Government, Ondo State, Nigeria.

The Power Plant was commissioned on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 by the Federal Government of Nigeria, and privatized on Friday, November 1, 2013 to Pacific Energy Company Limited.

Omotosho Phase I Power Plant is an open cycle gas turbine power plant with a capacity of 335MW (ISO)/ 304MW (Ambient) consisting of 8 GE Frame 6 Gas Turbines. The performance summary portrays significant growth over the years, since privatization.

Born in 1944 to a Nigerian civil engineer, who was the planning adviser to the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, in the early 1960s, Lanre Towry-Coker attended St. Matthias School, Lagos, and Kingston College, Surrey, England, before going on to the Architectural Association School of Architecture and the University of North-East London for his architectural training. He established his architectural firm, Towry-Coker Associates, in 1976. An indigene of Lagos (Towry Street on Lagos Island was named after his family) He was one of the original planners of the capital city Abuja, and has won numerous awards for his work on major buildings in Nigeria.

In 1999, Towry-Coker was the first Commissioner for Works and Housing in Lagos State. He is the author of the book Housing Policy And The Dynamics Of Housing Delivery In Nigeria: Lagos State As Case Study, published by MakeWay Press in 2012.

Towry-Coker is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA) and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACI.Arb.) in the UK.In 2017 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the only Nigerian and one of currently just 30 architects worldwide accorded that honour.

Chief Suara Olayiwola Alani Bankole is a Nigerian businessman and chieftain from Ogun State. He is Chairman of West African Aluminum Products(WAAP) Plc. He holds the aristocratic titles Oluwo of Iporo Ake and Seriki Jagunmolu of Egbaland. He attended Baptist Boys High School in Abeokuta, and later went to the University of Ghana for further studies.

West African Aluminum Products(WAAP) Plc is involved in manufacturing and sale of aluminum products including, importing, buying, selling and exchanging aluminum products in Nigeria. The firm was established in 1975 and listed on the stock exchange, on 6th September 1989. As at 2012, it had an investment of over three billion naira, with volume of business in the region of N500 Million.

In 2008, NITEL's head office - 37-storey landmark building standing over 160m (520ft) high skyscraper on Marina, Lagos known as NECOM house was sold to West African Aluminum Products (WAAP) Plc, for =N=4 billion naira. The sale was carried out by the Liquidator of NITEL/M-Tel Staff Pension Fund, Messrs Olusola Adekanola and Co.

However, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Ambassador Stephen Willoughby, challenged the sale claiming that former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in a memo dated May 16, 2007, had approved the Presidential Task force’s recommendation that NECOM House be retained in the schedule of NITEL’s core operational assets, due to its strategic importance to the SAT-3 operations. This led to the revocation of the sale in 2011.

Alani Bankole put the set back behind him, and focused on his other key business concerns, such as Freight Agencies Nigeria Ltd, the first freight company in West Africa, through which he became a multimillionaire at the age of 34. Alani Bankole is currently the Chairman, Board of Trustees, of the newly registered Action Democratic Party, ADP. His son is Dimeji Bankole, who used to be the former Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Frigoglass Industries (Nigeria) Ltd. sells glass bottles, plastic crates, metallic crowns and ice cold beverage coolers for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The company is based in Lagos, Nigeria. Frigoglass Industries (Nigeria) Ltd. operates as a subsidiary of Frigoglass SAIC.

Chief Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo, CON, is a Nigerian corporate lawyer and philanthropist. He was educated at St Phillips Primary School, Aiyetoro, Ile-Ife, and later attended Oduduwa College, Ife for his secondary education in 1936, before finishing his studies at Igbobi College in Lagos. He later obtained a law degree from the London University in 1949. His career started in the Judicial Dept in Enugu, from where he was transferred to Port Harcourt.

He was an early advocate of domiciliary accounts in Nigeria, which later came into existence with the promulgation of the Foreign Currency Decree 18 of 1985. In the late 1960s, he was among the group of businessmen who supported local equity participation in foreign firms, operating in Nigeria.

Ogunbanjo later served as Chairman and Director of NFI Insurance Company Plc. Mr. Ogunbanjo also served as the Chairman and Director of Beta Glass Co. Plc until September 28, 2010. The well-respected industrialist, is now 93 years old.

On his return from the University of London, where he had gone to study law in 1949, he was called to the bar in 1950. He first worked briefly for the law firm of H.O. Davies, before establishing his own private practice. His firm added two more partners, Samuel Ladoke Akintola and Michael Odesanya in 1952, to become Samuel, Chris and Michael Solicitors. The partnership was dissolved in 1960, and his practice became Chris Ogunbanjo & Co. The new practice specialized in corporate law.

Ogunbanjo's familiarity with corporate law, led him to be a significant shareholder in various Nigerian companies like: West African Batteries, Metal Box Toyo, Union Securities, 3M Nigeria, ABB Nigeria, Roche Nigeria and Chemical and Allied Products Ltd. Fondly described as a 'Captain of Industry,' Chief Ogunbanjo has established a reputation for promoting and nurturing industrial ventures.

After retiring as Chairman of Beta Glass Plc in 2010, his son Abimbola Ogunbanjo stepped into the saddle. While the core investor in the firm is Frigoglass of Greece, the Ogunbanjos are widely acknowledged to have the largest individual shareholding in the company, after the Greeks. Frigoglass recently announced its plans to sell its investment in the firm, to GZI of Mauritius for $225 million USD.

Beta Glass Plc, the glass bottle and metal crowns manufacturing company for the beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, posted a profit-after-tax of N800million, (up from N62million declared in the same period in 2016), as its' first quarter results for the 2017 financial year. In 2016, its total annual revenue rose 20 per cent to N19.09 billion while profit after tax (PAT) surged by 91 per cent to N3.79 billion. Its' products are widely used within the Nigerian domestic market. It also exports its products to Cameroon, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone and 6 other countries.

The company which has sustained strong sales and profit growth in the last three quarters, said that revenue in the first quarter grew 44% to N4.4billion bolstered by a surge in local demand.

Beta Glass is a subsidiary of Frigoglass Industries Limited, exporting glass packaging materials to 13 countries. The company has manufacturing plants in Ughelli, Delta State, and Agbara, Ogun State, with three furnaces that exceed 600 tons of produced glass containers per day.

Breweries account for 43 per cent of its total glass unit sales while soft drinks constitute 29 per cent. Wine and spirits make up 12 per cent just as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics’ patronage is estimated at 16 per cent.

The company has scheduled a furnace cold repair at its Ughelli plant to extend its life-span and raise production capacity.
