100 broilers will eat more than 300kg in 8 weeks. In fact they'll eat about 400kg in 6 weeks if feed ad-lib. Pls tell people the truth. I grow broilers since 2013 and I've done more than 8k birds this year alone so I trust me this is the fact! And yes I self mill which is more expensive but actually cheaper cause of the result it gives. Most time my birds hit 2kg in 5.5 weeks!

MasExcel19:
How much would it cost me to start a Broiler Farm?

This is the question I get asked every time. The truth is this, lots of persons wants to go into poultry business but they fear a lot of things. Some of these fears include:
- those guys(chickens) can die!
- the capital required is too high
- how do I even sell those idiots?
Lols!
You see, you can never start a business staying far off. You need interest and some little faith to risk something.

All of the above are not in all true. It is easy to start and its damn cheap too.

There a lot of things that add to cost of raising birds and it start from day one.
If u don't handle things smartly u will make a lot of unnecessary expenses

1. First thing u need to do is to make sure that you are buying your doc directly from d farm. Its way cheaper that way. Those individuals you book with add their own interest you know. Get at least 2-3 reliable farms you can work with and keep in touch with their doc prices. This way you get to knw what they are selling at every time. Personally I have studied the thing. I know exactly when prices ar very low and high. So I buy more when they are very low
Let's use agrited to do an estimate. Doc sold at 180 yesterday (Mon. 17th July) 100 doc will cost 18,000 plus a #10 tp per chick which is #1000. Total cost of doc #19,000

2. You will need to prepare d brooding space. Things required include:
a. Wood shaving - 400 for a bag. You need 1 bag. If its free at your place then you're lucky.
b. Heat source- use charcoal stove. 1 bag of charcoal is 1200 here. Use half bag. Dts 600

3. Usually 4 vaccines are needed within 4 weeks of your doc. 2 of Gomboro and 2 of lasota. If you administer the first 2 properly you don't need to do the rest again unless where you find them not agile
So here we will use 2

Lasota - 100dose 600
Gomboro- 100 dose 1000

4. Other things u need are drugs and vitamins. You will need antibiotics, vitamin, coccidostat plus any other one if u observe any problem with your chicken.
Of course there are other additives if you like

So,
Antibiotics- 600-1200 depending on the type
Antiviral- 500
Vitamin-800
Coccidostat- 400

5. Feeding is the major activity in the farm and it usually takes most of the cost in production.
First thing u need here is to make sure u buy or make ur feeds in bulk. This way, you save a lot on transportation.
Current Prices of feeds in my area:

a. Top feeds -4000- 4200
b. Hybrid- 3600-3650
c. Livestock feeds-3800-3900
d. Sunseed-3650-3700
There are others

You will need about 12 bags of feeds for 8 weeks period.
Let's use the least of the above feeds.
Hybrid- 3650 *4 (starter)=#14,600
Finisher-3600*8=28,800
Total- #43,400

But if u are making your own feed. You will spend #26,000-30,000
The range is dependent on the following:
a. Your target market
b. How much you're able to learn from what I can teach you. The first time you save 15%, as you progress and master the skills 20-30% plus
c. Cost of feed ingredients in your area

Difference in price of company processed feeds and your feeds.
43,400 - 26,000=#17400
43,400 - 30,000=#13,400
* Feeds get stale after 1 month and decrease in quality.
* make feeds in bulk to save cost on transportation. 4 bags will last u first 4 weeks. Then the remaining 8bags the nxt 4 weeks
* Making your feeds puts you in charge of the nutrition your chickens get, save you cost, and helps you get better results in terms of weight and egg at even lesser time

Cost summary:
a. Doc- 19,000
b. Wood shaving-400
c. Charcoal-600
d. Vaccines-1,600
e. Drugs/Vit-2,300
*f. Company made feeds-43,400
g. Your own feed-26,000
*Transportation cost of feeds -1,500
Total -#49,900
*omitted in Total

What I have just shown you is the production cost of raising 100 Broilers.
You also need a housing for your chickens. That's easy to do. Get a carpenter friend for a brother price to build one.
Start right at your back yard and grow big.

Remember, All you need to start that farm is only #49,900

Now, pulse!
I hear someone asking about profit.
Imagine selling a chicken at just #1,000
Punch your calculator. Try multiplying by 600 birds.
Oh! sorry u were supposed to multiply by 100

Stop idleness! Go start farming!

Good luck
Salami Excel Oluwafemi
Determined on making you a farmer

Thanks for your response! If you have been following this thread you'd notice that I have handled this concern.

You are not wrong. It is your experience you have shared and it is true that they can consume 300kg above within 8 weeks but it depends on your managerial skills and the weight you're looking for.
I believe that chickens should be grown according to the various markets available. This means the various weights in demand. One has to study the markets available in his location and the various weights demanded. This will help you properly manage your feeding rates, it quality etc. You also need to be sure your chickens are actually eating what is placed in front of them and not wasting feeds so that you assume you're feeding them a particular quantity daily.

I have said we should argue constructively. One love bro

Good afternoon and happy Sunday everyone! I hope you all have been great?
I want to sincerely thank u all for engaging in our discussions here and encourage you do more.

The challenges faced by poultry farmers is huge and cut across all farmers in Nigeria. It is important that as farmers we also have a clue to what this problems are, damages already cost and those being affected from past till date. This will not only help us find a collective solution but prepare us psychologically knowing that we face a common problem and that we are not alone.

In the midst of all these challenges however, lies a few who are still making mega profits. I am not even talking about the big players in the industry but small farmers like you and I. Surely there must be something they are doing that you or me aren't.

So to continue our discussion on "Poultry farmers worst nightmares' I will be posting lots of articles written by other persons after which I did come in with my own class and then we would discuss a way out of the problems.

To make sure everyone is following I will ask you indicate by commenting after each post.

The first post comes up this night.

Ose!

Recession strangulating poultry industry, poultry farmers cry out
Wale Akinselure
POULTRY farmers in the country have decried that recession has foisted great challenges upon production and marketing of its products that tilt towards strangulating the poultry industry.

The farmers at the Oyo State 2017 Poultry Workshop, with the theme, “Sustaining Poultry Production in a Recessed Economy”, held in Ibadan, said the situation translated into increasing abysmal returns for poultry farmers.

Managing Director, Rostal Resources Limited, Mr Taiwo Adeoye, who was main speaker, said due to recession, poultry farmers grappled with skyrocketing cost of inputs, adulteration of raw materials, incessant egg glut, poor pricing of eggs, outbreak of poultry diseases as well as inconsistent government policies.

According to him, the telling effects of the situation was closure of farms, downsizing of production, high cost of products like maize and soybeans.

Registrar, Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), Professor Eustace Iyayi, in his own speech, bemoaned that poultry farmers could also not compete locally because products were still smuggled in, despite import prohibition of poultry products.

Iyayi who spoke on, “ Regulatory Issues as it affects Poultry Production”, prayed that government grants poultry farmers some subsidy for them to expand production of inputs and meet local needs.

Furthermore, Iyayi urged the federal government to grant local poultry farmers waivers and leverages for them to be able to produce and export standardized products.

Speaking, Chairman, Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Oyo State, Mr Banjo Akanji, also lamented the the hike in price and scarcity of raw materials especially maize.

He chided erroneous notions about the consumption of eggs, while also decrying that the existence of unhealthy eggs in the market, stemming from poor production processes.

In his remarks, Chairman, Animal Science Association of Nigeria, Oyo state (ASAN), Dr Olugbenga Ogunwole, called for collaboration between farmers, government, professionals in resolving the problems of the poultry industry.

Such collaboration, Ogunwole noted, would enhance the wellbeing of Nigerians in the provision of wholesome quality protein.

Earlier in his address, President, NIAS, Professor Folorunso Adu charged poultry farmers to adopt efficient production strategies and technology to survive current challenging times.

He avowed optimism that with the profession of the federal government that the nation was already exiting recession, the nation’s poultry industry would come out stronger.

Other speakers who advanced positions for the sustenance of the poultry industry included, National President, Poultry Association of Nigeria, Dr Ayoola Oduntan; Director, Pollution Unit, Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Mrs Modupe Adeleye; and, Managing Director, Milky Way Agrovet Services, Dr Ibraheem Akande.

On Poultry Feeds...

If u ever try making feeds you'd never buy feeds again. The difference is so clear and the gap too big.
It is easy to do but you have to know how so your chickens don't suffer from malnutrition or over weight so that they die early or later at harvest. Chickens need to be heavy but wen de get too heavy with more of fats instead of meat the suffer from heart disease and die easily wen exposed to stress.
Your customers also want more meat and less oil. Unless you have that specific order you have to meet that demand
To make feed requires you know the proper demands on chicken dieting. This is indicated as Digestible Crude Protein (DCPs) on all feed ingredients. The combination of which forms the CPs requirements for Starter, Grower, Finisher plus any other feed category for any type of bird. Whether it is broiler, layers, turkey, quail etc.
To do all these means you need the adequate knowledge plus consistency after knowing how.
Improved methods saves you 15%-30% cost on feeds. This means more profits for you and big smile on the faces of your customers since they will be getting good chickens or eggs.
There is no magic around it! Just knowledge!

I haven't forgotten. We still need to finish our discussion on "poultry farmers worst nightmares!'

Brace up! Something Big is coming!

Written in 2009 but still relevant today.

Nigeria-Problems in Poultry industry.

NIGERIA – PROBLEMS IN POULTRY INDUSTRY.
The government-owned Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative and Rural Development Bank (NACRDB) across the country has not done better, according to an article in All Africa. The only exceptions to these rules are the rich local and multinational farms, which are connected to bank CEOs and officials at the corridor of power.
This was the lot of poultry farmers in Nigeria, before the current global economic crisis, that has led to the loss of 368 billion naira of bank loans invested in stocks. In the coming period, the industry will face serious crisis because it will be much easier for the proverbial camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for poor farmers obtaining loans from banks. This is a sad commentary on government so-called small- and medium-scale entrepreneurship drive.
Infectious diseases are another major challenge to the industry, because of the economic importance of disease-causing organisms like bacteria, virus, fungi and protozoa, which birds are susceptible to, bringing about devastating effects to both the flocks and the farmers. For instance, the outbreak of avian influenza, otherwise known as bird flu, in 2005/2006, led to the death of over 1.5 million birds across the country. It will be recalled that a large number of poor farmers lost their means of livelihood when their flocks were destroyed by government without compensation, whilst the rich farms (Obasanjo’s, Sambawa, among others) made fortune from both government and foreign donor agencies, alleges All Africa.
Poultry farmers nationwide also suffered from other infections, like Newcastle disease, avian coryza, infectious bursa disease, fowl cholera, fowl typhoid amongst others, which are equally deadly to the birds. In fact, the author of the article says he lost over 2,000 birds to Newcastle disease in December 2008, which he is yet to recover from. The government in the past used to take measures to prevent and control livestock diseases, through the establishment of research institutes across the country, like the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, Plateau State, for the production of vaccines. But due to under funding of agriculture sector by successive governments, the institute could barely sustain itself let alone being able to produce enough vaccines to meet the growing needs of poultry farmers. The adverse effect of this is manifested in the growing rate of vaccine importations by rich farmers from other countries. The poor farmers patronize the importers, whose vaccines’ shelf life and cold chain has been altered, due to long storage, hence, the losses resulting from vaccination failures and associated diseases. This explains the losses suffered by this writer and many others poultry farmers across Nigeria.
High cost of feed ingredients is another death knell of the industry. The perennial scarcity occasioned by high cost of feed materials especially maize has been a recurring decimal in the poultry industry in Nigeria. This has resulted in large numbers of farmers closing shop because of their inability to feed birds. In 2008, due to the global food crisis, the price of maize and other materials like soybeans soared beyond the reach of poor farmers, leading to farm closure and the resultant job losses. The public outcry generated by these losses compelled the federal government through its Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to release maize from the national strategic grains reserves. But due to its commitment to big profiteers, a large quantity of the maize went to big farmers, while members of the executive of Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) also benefited. Those poor poultry farmers who could not buy the product from PAN executives at the exorbitant price have to simply close down their farms. The remaining few farmers who still struggle to survive all these aforementioned onslaughts are again constrained by marketing, leading to the perennial eggs glut suffered by farmers across the country.
Flowing from the foregoing analysis, it is obvious that the poultry sub-sector of the economy is in dire need of attention. This need has been heightened by the present global financial crisis and economic recession. But to expect this government to revive the poultry industry in particular or the Nigerian economy in general on permanent basis in the face of plummeting international crude oil price, will be wishful thinking. This is because at the best of times when government at all levels (federal, state and local) were literally swimming in petro-dollars wealth, nothing concrete was done by the government to improve the economic well-being of the suffering majority, nor was an attempt made to diversify the economy which is solely based on exportation of crude oil. Rather, the huge sums of money realised were either diverted through over-bloated contracts, or looted outright by government officers.

How to beat recession with poultry farming secrets: starting up your farm with less than 100k -Part 1
Introduction:

* Don't let capital scare u. I have proved that u can start with 49k

I am not failing in my promise to discuss "poultry farmers worst nightmares'. I think it would be better to have as much knowledge as you can about a thing before knowing the challenges there's. So I have decided to divide these teachings into 4 series:

1. How to beat recession with poultry farming secrets: starting up your farm with less than 100k

2. Practical steps to starting a poultry farming business

3. Poultry farmers worst nightmares

4. Poultry farming secrets that guarantees systemic flow of income with over 50% profits

I want to give you EVERYTHING!

And no this won't be taking too long as before. In fact we are starting right away with the first. For the next 7 days I will make a post everyday till we finish this series.

In the first 2 series, I will be exposing to u the following:

- poultry farming basis
-the different nitche in poultry farming and their various opportunities in terms of CASH
- the various entry points in broilers and layers farming and the best and easy one to start with
-what u need to set up a poultry farm
-the techniques involved in growing day old chicks
- how to administer broiler vaccine, care for your chicks and grow healthy chickens

And lot's more...

Poultry farming basis:

There's a how to everything.
Success in life or business requires great time in planning, initiating and executing.

Someone once said, he who fails to plan, plan to fail.
In the poultry business you need adequate time studying all you can before you ever begin. You must know what the business entails in term of resources, skill, energy, time etc.
You don't just start a poultry farm because you saw your neighbour making money from it or because you see everyone around you doing it. That everyone is successful at a business doesn't mean you too would make it doing that business. You'd make it though if you know EVERYTHING there's and have ALL the skills to implement them.

So first question you must ask yourself is, Do I have the time to live a farm life? Can I feel comfortable with the smell of chicken droppings, Slaughtering of chickens, and all the works there's? Do I have the time to manage a farm or at least have someone do it for me?

You see, you can't grow in something you are not comfortable doing. You may make money but it won't be Big and you'd never find happiness too.
Two things you must never do:

1. NEVER go into poultry farming because everyone is doing it.

2. NEVER go into poultry farming because of the "money'

Please understand that your drive must be to add Value and not to make ends meet. If you are into poultry farming or any business to make ends meet. That's the only thing u will succeed in- making ends meet but if you're in it to add VALUE you did help others make their ends meet and you get wealthy in the process.

After you may have considered all the factors around you and still decide to go on with poultry farming, you then need to Choose your niche.

You see in business, there's only one way of making money and that is, to sell
- product or
- service

Your product or service must be specific and not generalised. It must solve specific problem for a specific set of persons.

There are many sub-sectors in the poultry industry which you can tap into. Below ar niches in the poultry business:
1. Egg production (layers breeding)
2. Meat production (broiler breeding)
3. Chick breeding (hatchery)
4. Poultry feed production
5. Poultry equipment manufacturing
6. Egg and meat processing, packaging and marketing
7. Poultry marketing and consultancy

You also need to choose a bird type. What type of bird would you be focussing on?
Is it
- domestic fowl or chicken (broilers and layers)
- turkey
- guinea fowl
- pigeon or
- duck
You see, you can't do everything. While it is possible to do 2, 3 or all of the above, you must first start from one.

Each of the above requires special skills, have their own secrets and points of Entries.

I discovered early in life that once you are doing the wrong thing at any point in life you will experience little or no progress. So the "poultry farming basis' is key as it helps your decision in whether you did want to be a poultry farmer or not. Also, it helps you in sketching out all you need to do plus what you want to achieve within a specific period. This is called Business plan. In this case, poultry farming business plan. It gives you a clear focus so that by the time are done understanding the various branches or niches of poultry you'd write something like these:

- My Layers farm business plan
- My broilers farm business plan
- My hatchery business plan
- My poultry feed business plan
- My poultry equipment manufacturing business plan
- My egg and meat processing, packaging and marketing business plan
- My poultry marketing and consultancy business plan

And where you have the intentions of growing from a particular niche to another to form a network of businesses within the same poultry farming business, you just combine the two or three niches and write your own business plan.

You see you may have a VERY big picture in your head but you must be humble to start small and grow. It makes your foundation solid and helps you gain MASTERY in each niche as you expand.

Now let us begin by explaining all the niches in poultry starting with;

1. Egg Production (Layers breeding): this is a branch of poultry that is concerned with breeding layers bird type for the purpose of eggs. Breeders in this field enter the business at the doc or point of lay (pullets) developmental stage. Breeders make money from the sells of eggs and chickens after the layers must have reduced in productivity which is usually after about 1 year period of egg laying. The eggs are sold at N700 - N1000 per crate depending on the size of eggs and location. A crate will contain 30 eggs. The layers after their productive days can be sold at N1,000 - N1,300

2. Meat production (broilers breeding): this branch is concerned with breeding broilers bird type for the purpose of meat. Broilers breeders make money from selling their chickens which usually get to marketable size from 6 - 12 weeks period. Broilers breeders usually enter the business at doc, 2 weeks, or 4 weeks developmental stage. Chickens are sold at N800 - N5,000 depending on weight and target market.

3. Chicken breeding (hatchery): this branch is concerned specifically for hatching eggs using incubators. Chicken breeders are those you buy doc from like agrited, CHI, ZarTech, NZ, Obasanjo farms etc. Anyone who has the resources and technical know how can also tap into it. This branch is already populated in the western region of Nigeria but still remain untapped or at least only a little in the North. We at the North have to book and wait for doc to be transported down from the west. Anyone in the north with the skills and resources will not only be rich but will attain it on time. Breeders in this category hatch almost all bird (layers, broilers, turkeys etc) type depending on their capacity. The prices of doc always fluctuate due to demands. The higher the demand, the higher the price. As a rule, demands for broilers are high from 14 weeks to celebrity periods and lower when this period are far from normal estimation of harvest. Layers doc are also influenced by demands. They are normally costlier than broilers no matter the session since they produce more profit than broilers.

4. Poultry feed production: this branch is concerned with making poultry feeds and selling same for profits. This branch is mostly run by factories and the feeds termed "factory processed feeds'. Factories already involved in this business include Hybrid, UAC producers of Vita feeds, livestock, Top etc. Again individuals with the capacity and skills can also tap into this. All range of feeds as far as poultry is concerned including fisheries and mammals are sometimes produced, packaged and sold by factories in this field. Sophisticated crushing and mixing equipments are required in this industry.

5. Poultry equipment manufacturing: this branch of poultry is involved with the manufacturing or importation of all kinds of poultry equipments such as Battery cages, crushers and mixers etc. Some persons in this category also offer installation for free or at reduced prices.

6. Egg and meat processing, packaging and marketing: this involves all the process of collecting eggs or meat and processing them into marketable forms. Example chickens can be collected,,slaughtered, de-feathered, cut opened and properly cleaned, cut in sizes or left whole and frozen. Further steps can be taken to package the chickens and distributed at restaurants, hotels, functions etc.
Eggs are collected, cleaned and racked in crates before they are being marketed and distributed.
Those in the field can be both farmers and non farmers. You can own a poultry farm and still involve in the processing, packaging and marketing or if you don't own a farm, you patronise farmers, buy eggs or chickens at wholesale prices, process and sell at prices to make gains.

7. Poultry Marketing and consultancy: this include experts in poultry who are familiar with specific or other branches of poultry. They help in promoting products in specific or general branch of poultry, guide starters on all the steps they need to start the business, set up farms for poultry farmers, provide mentorship services etc. This job they do at a fee

Now that you have details of each niche. You can proceed to writing your business plan starting small and keeping the big picture in mind. It is not a must to write a business plan but if you are serious about growing in this business, may need loan, investors etc then you should.

How to beat recession with poultry farming secrets: starting up your farm with less than 100k - part 2

Poultry farming Basis continued: How to choose the right bird.

Poultry farming is a very sensitive business since it deals directly with living things at both entry and exit (sells points) points. The number one reason why people fail in this business is because they have failed to acknowledge this fact. You must learn to understand these creatures so that you know how they feel by listening to their crows or seeing the appearance of their droppings. Its CRAZY!

So in this episode, we will further explain the types of birds we have in this industry.

There are different bird types in the poultry business but we shall stick to the ones below:

- turkey
- layers
- broilers
- cockerel

TURKEY: these type of birds are grown for both household and commercial purposes. They are strong in terms of resistance to stress and diseases. They also propagate by laying eggs and hatching same after about 24-30 days incubation period. They usually take about 24 weeks and above for them to reach marketable size. They have both males and females. They come in two types of breeds- the local and agric breed. That's just the common names you can use to identify them. The agric breed is much better for commercial purposes since it attains heavy weights and grows faster than the local breed.
It is important that you first study the market in your location before deciding on this nitche. In my location (Northern Nigeria) the market for turkeys have gone bad. In the years 2000- 2010 this business was really hot in every sense. A big size turkey was sold at N15,000 - N20,000 then but now you can't sell a big size turkey at that price. You did sell at N10,000 after being stressed out. So check if this type of bird is good in your area.

LAYER: these type of birds are mostly grown for eggs. They are also strong in terms of resistance to diseases. Their stages of growth follows a path as this:

Chick - grower - pullet - layer

The above paths shows the various entry points you can enter the business. You can decide to enter at day old chick (doc) stage or grower or even pullet (point of lay).
It is advisable for a starter with no skill to enter at the point of lay stage because at that stage the birds would have been fully vaccinated and given the right nutrition which is very important for the next stage of development. The problem with this is that, one needs to be very sure of the farm he/she is buying from since not every farm might be kind enough to administer all vaccines and good nutrition to the birds up till the point of lay and there is no way of detecting this at the point you are buying the pullets. Here's the thing, your layers won't perform well in terms of the size of eggs, laying frequency and duration of lay if they have been undernourished or under vaccinated.
It is more advisable to begin or enter this business at doc since it puts you fully in charge of everything from day one.
You also need to know that breeding layers is more capital intensive than breeding broilers. However, it is the most profitable if everything is properly managed. You will be making money from sells of eggs(this can be daily) and the chicken after they must have finished laying.
It takes about 14-16 weeks before a layer chick is ripe to start laying and lays sometimes over a year.

BROILERS: these bird type are the most fragile. They are usually white coloured or white and brown stained coloured. They feed almost round the clock. They are grown mostly for meat. They attain marketable size from 6 weeks to 12 weeks. This means that they bring quick returns when compared to all the other bird types. Their developmental stages follow this path:

Chick - grower - finisher

The above paths also shows the entry points. You can buy from doc, at 2 weeks, or 4 weeks. It is advisable for starters to buy at 2 weeks or 4 weeks specially where you don't have the skills growing them from doc.
However, entering at doc is far more profitable than the rest entries. I usually advice that starters start with 10 -50 doc to familiarize themselves with all the methods involved and practice vaccination, feeds, vitamin administrations etc (each of this is better taught on a separate heading) before going big in the business.
Broilers are also good for someone with low capital since you can start with as little as 10 birds and grow your farm from there.

COCKEREL: this type of bird is also very strong in terms of resistance to disease. They are also grown for their meat but unlike broilers they get to marketable size in 6 months and even at this their weight and meat size isn't as big as broilers. It is not advisable for commercial except you want to enter at doc and sell off 2 -4weeks old. They are the cheapest you will always find at 2 weeks or doc. Their developmental stages follow the path shown below:

Chick - grower - finisher

They come in white, black and white mixed or white and brown mixed colours. They grow usually tall and big in size like a local cock you find in your neighborhood.

I have taken my time to explain the bird types so that you can fully understand each. This will further guide you in choosing your niche.

I am sure you now have clarity on what bird or nitche to start with. If u are only reading and not doing anything then I suppose I am wasting my time but I believe I am not because I see serious people here.

Your first assignment:

Develop a 10pages business plan stating your niche, reason for selection, a brief of your SWOT analysis etc.

If you would like me to review your business plan send to oluwafemisalamiexcel@gmail.com

* only the first 5 business plans sent 24 hours from the time this post was made will be reviewed.

How to beat recession with poultry farming secrets: starting up your farm with less than 100k- Part 3

Hey Guys! I am so happy seeing most of you following this series and actually doing something already. It is my hope and prayer that you not only start but succeed exceedingly!

In the coming days we will be doing things that will blow your mind and make you MONEY farming. I encourage you to take necessary steps if you have interest in poultry farming.

Today, i will be explaining to you the best breed to start with especially if you're a newbie and the point of entry that I think is best.

*If u are starting out for the first time and are ready to grow ur business, u can't wait too long to do this. Imagine waiting until 6 months before u can sell 50 chickens wen u can actually sell 3 times and triple ur profit within the same period and at a good price. So growing Cockerel is slow unless u are planning on buying doc and selling at 2 weeks it is not advisable.

* After Cockereal, layers are the strongest in terms of their ability to resist illness and withstand stress but growing these breed requires serious capital and d technical know how. You have to really know the business to be in it. Also, u don't get returns quickly since a bird will start laying from 12-16 weeks during the period of which u will be spending money on vaccines, drugs and quality nutrition. Your money is in the eggs these birds lay per day so imagine running a small scale, spending all these money only to park 50 - 100 eggs daily after 12 or 14weeks.

* The best point of entry for all 3 breed type is doc ie day old chick. Here are the reasons
1. It is the most cost effective
2. You get to understand these creatures better. The more u understand them d better u knw how to grow them and the more your chances of profiting.

* Buying doc is the most risky but the best! I mean u are sure that the chicks have good nutrition from day 1 and will receive all the necessary vaccines, drugs and vitamins. All of which would account for the results you will get in terms of weight and egg. You are not sure of all these if you buy at 2 weeks old unless u know the farm.

* the cheapest point of entry for layer farmers is at the point of lay. At this point the layer is assumed to have received all the Vitamins, drugs, nutrition necessary for its future performance (laying eggs). There have been lots of report of under performance of layers bought at point of lay (pullets) stage. So unless you have heard a good report about a farm do not buy their pullets. You will waste money.

See, there are a lot of factors that contribute to the performance of chickens and for layers these 3 come top on the list:
1. Complete diet/highly nutritious feed
2. Vaccines
3. skill of nurturing

Layers need to get all 3 above to be able to develop the necessary enzymes which would help them produce the eggs you seek. Remember, your money comes first from selling eggs. Small sized eggs are priced low and delayed or under laying leads to waste of money.

* Another unique thing with layers is that it requires much more capital to start with even if you enter at point of lay. You will spend more in housing, feeds etc. It is also more profitable if done on a large scale of 500 pullets at the least. I mean you don't want to go through all the stress only to collect 50 eggs daily.
* Also, unlike broilers which can comfortably be breed at the backyard of your house, layers would need a good location far from residence. It is easier for your neighbours to accommodate the smell of chicken droppings than to accommodate a mixture of chicken droppings and rotten eggs... That shit can kill... Lols

* So if you have the required skills, a good location and the capital you can go ahead with layers. If not start small and grow BIG farming broilers.

*From all I have said, you should understand that the best breed to start with especially if you are inexperienced and need returns quickly is BROILERS.

They are the most fragile with the highest chance of mortality but there is a way on how you can successfully brood them with less or no death rate.

How to beat recession with Poultry Farming secrets: starting up your farm with less than 100k – Part 4
===============
Poultry Farming Terms:
Hey guys!

I like to appreciate you all for following this series so far. Thanks for the ‘likes’ and ‘comments’. Most importantly, I thank you for doing something with the knowledge you’re getting here. This series is on different platforms and I have so far received good reports. Everyday someone is motivated to leave the seat of idleness and join farming. There is no greater joy than that feeling…
I understand that this series is supposed to be about teaching you the secrets in poultry farming and how you can start with less than 100k. This is why so far we have been discussing almost everything from the basis up… there is no way you can prosper in a field you know little or nothing about. If you have been following all the episodes in this series, you did notice that I have hidden lots of the secrets within each piece. If you dig deep you will find them and if you use them you will not only make MONEY farming but you did become a boss too.

Today, I want to discuss ‘poultry farming terms’. Most times people ignore ‘terms’ in the businesses they do and just focus on the money. Can you imagine a Lawyer, speaking like a Mechanic in the court of law? I understand that he can twist it so that it makes sense and win him that case but if he just speaks like the mechanic and ignore his ‘language’ he’d lose.

I don’t just want you farming like everyone else. I want you to be VERY good at it so that your communication and lifestyle shows it. I also want you understanding me every time I use these terms in this series and the subsequent ones to come.

Let’s cut to the chase. There are so many terms used by poultry farmers but I will mention a few that are frequently used.

1. DOC: An acronym used to mean “Day Old Chick.”

2. Breed: A group of birds that reproduce their own likeness in their offspring.

3. Brooding: the period of the first weeks of a chicken’s life when it requires a very high standard of care including the provision of special diets and supplementary warmth. This period is usually from 1- 14 days.

4. Cull: the identification and removal of non-productive birds from the flock.

5. Feed conversion ratio: the relationship between feed production and production (eggs or growth).

6. Wrungs: the term used to describe a condition of a chicken’s inability to increase in size or weight. It is mostly genetic and canv’t be corrected. It could also mean dwarfism in chickens.

7. Uneven Growth: a situation where chickens of the same stock grow differently due to competition for feed, water and space. This condition can often times be corrected by improving the underlying factors.

8. Production efficiency: the relationship between the various major production factors which, depending on the class of stock, will include feed consumption, live weight gain, egg production and mortality.

9. Metabolisable Energy (ME): The energy in a feed ingredient or diet available for metabolism (used by the animal for normal body functions and activity).

10. Vitamin/Mineral Premix: a concentrated source of various vitamins and /or minerals mixed together so as to make the adding of them to the diet much easier.

As I said before the list goes on…

Please try to get use to the ones listed above so they no longer appear strange when next you see them.

***If you have questions on all we have done so far drop them on the comment space.

Thanks.

How to beat recession with Poultry Farming secrets: starting up your farm with less than 100k – Part 5
================
Hey guys!

I trust you have been having a great time on this journey. Well, I have. When I first started this whole madness about getting people from their idleness to start farming, I didn’t think it would go this far. Every day, the situation of this country gets worse and youth get frustrated in their attempt to look for a job or start one. While we know that the situation of this country is bad enough, we also know that excuses are the major root of the idle state of our youths. Everyone wants everything done for them. Everyone wants the government to at least create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. The bad news is this ‘no one gives a danm about you!’ while you’re there complaining there are many people who are starting up businesses and succeeding. While you’re there feeling sorry for how many times you have failed and how hard you have tried, there are many who have failed in numbers you can’t ever imagine, have tried so hard both secretly and openly and yet NEVER GAVE UP! If you ever want to succeed, quitting is not an option!

The first time I started farming, I lost all 50 broilers. The second time a 100 and then I almost gave up. I was encouraged by Mum to go back in and stick to it till I succeed.

Today, we control a 700 broiler capacity farm and though a lot have been happening as regarding our plans of expanding to at least 1500 broiler farm capacity by the end of this year we have no doubt that it is possible.

I can’t promise that the road will be all rosy and sweet. I can’t promise that you won’t face defeat. A wise man once said ‘you will face many defeat but don’t let yourself to be defeated.’ In less than 3 weeks alone I have seen about 4 poultry farms on sale. While many are closing up every day, many are starting out. Just today, Osita Chiemeke, shared a link( https://www.nairaland.com/3994366/natnudo-foods-targets-1m-jobs) with me where I read about a particular farm that distribute 2.844 million broilers every 3 weeks. I mean these people are in the same recess country we are in and don’t tell me that “it’s because they are Big, that’s why they are succeeding.”

You see there will never be a good time for you to start. If you are going to start, just start anyway!

Let me also set the ‘gender syndrome’ straight… according to facebook, there are more women who are either interested or already into farming than men. I have seen many women right here in the North where I am who are into all kinds of businesses and mostly farming. These last 2 Saturdays I have seen them in the market bringing farm produce to sale most of which were farmed by them or the people they paid to do the job. A male or female, you have no excuse.

My failures when I started were largely because I had little or no knowledge about poultry. The only thing I wanted to do then was create an alternative source of income. Having failed severally and being in this business for over 2 years now I know most of the challenges you will face as a newbie. I also know some secrets you can use so that you make progress even faster than I ever did. In this series alone, I have given you many already.

The first time I wrote a post stating that, you only need 49k to start a farm, I got so many rejections. Some people in their opinion thought I was misleading people. Others must have thought “this guy is a scam…what is he even saying?” I mean is not wise that you start a business from the TOP. All businesses are first started from the bottom up. Start small. Learn the ropes then go BIG!

The past few weeks alone, I have heard testimonies from my students who went out in search of a space to use for farming and got lucky to have them free. Some got both land and the housing free. I mean they weren’t asked to pay rents. You too can be lucky if you but ask. If you don’t get lucky, start right at your backyard. Source for materials from construction sites (please, don’t steal), get a carpenter friend in your area and construct a 2 step medium sized housing.

If you also stop wasting, you will save a lot while farming. You will then discover what magic a 100k can produce. I will be showing you how to curtail waste, apply some dangerous secrets and increase your profiting but that would come in the series “Poultry farming secrets that guarantees systemic flow of income of over 50% profits.“

In the next series, we will be focusing on the practical aspects of poultry.

Thanks for following this series to the end. See you in the next series.
