So three things I have learnt today:

1. Because of the argument here I had to do a little research and despite the arguments, one thing is certain we all agree that Nollywood ("Not Hollywood or "Nigerian Hollywood" is patterned after Hollywood). So we can apply Hollywood standards to determine what Nollywood is and what it is not.

2. From my understanding of Hollywood it comprises movies shown in Cinemas, Soap Operas negating the position of earlier posters and this means that if Nollywood is our own version of Hollywood, we cannot discount history by deleting the contributions of our heroes past in the industry wherever they may have come from (we are one Nigeria.) Infact when you google Nollywood, the first thing that you see on Wikipedia is
"The cinema of Nigeria, often referred to informally as Nollywood".

3. In terms of commercial success, Papa Ajasco (1984) by Wale Adenuga became the first blockbuster, grossing approximately ₦61,000 (approx. 2015 ₦21,552,673) in three days. A year later, Mosebolatan (1985) by Moses Olaiya also went ahead to gross ₦107,000 (approx. 2015 ₦44,180,499) in five days.[18]
After the decline of the Golden era, Nigerian film industry experienced a second major boom in the 1990s, supposedly marked by the release of the direct-to-video film Living in Bondage (1992); We do not however know how much Living in Bondage made but for the sake of not appearing Tribalistic, let us accept that it made more money than the Papa Ajasco and Mosebolatan because of the increased literacy level at the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_of_Nigeria

Conclusion: Living in Bondage did not put Nigeria on the global map as we must at least have heard of FESTAC 1977 but it played its part in stopping the decline of the movie industry and as is the case when we are arguing whether Pele is greater than Messi or not.
The younger generation that did not witness Pele who scored over 1000 goals will always believe Messi is better. One thing is certain, Facts may change but the Truth is sacrosanct.

Was nollywood existing as a brand name for Nigerian movies back then? Those were just under the Nigerian film industry not nollywood.

Just because living in bondage wasn't a Yoruba movie you are quick to say it wasn't the forerunner of the nollywood movies we have today.

Go to northern Nigeria and mention living in bondage then add any of those "strange" names you have up there and see which was really recognised as a nollywood movie.

I witnessed both eras and I am more suitable to guide and correct you.Your definition of Nollywood as the commercialization of Nigerian films is patently wrong and even if I agree with you for the purpose of this argument, then you are still wrong because I remember watching these older films at the national theatre,Iganmu and those films are commercialized because these films are advertised on local TV and radio stations and Nigerians pay to buy their tickets and the queue is usually long and they are shown over a period of time making room for the artists to make even more money.

U r still goin on a voyage of discovery
The argument here is the term HOME VIDEO,which means a pre recorded tape or cassette made for home viewing and living in bondage was the birth.
Like i said nigeria wsnt lacking in stage dramas, theaters ,tv plays bf d birth of nollywood but living in bondage kicked of home videos and kenneth was concise and chose his words carefully.
Am sure u understand now, all the theatre artistry u mentioned wasnt focused on home videos cos u cn count on ur fingers the num of families wit tape recorders so the focus was more on stage plays and tv episodes
And i was born on that era so dont be presumptuous

Living in Bondage was no doubt the beginning of home videos and the movie deserves a very important place in our history.
However, what we are saying is that if Nollywood is Nigeria's version of Hollywood, the cinemas, stage plays, soap operas are really part of its history. It is just like talking about Boeing 747 without talking about those archaic planes that Orville and Wilbur Wright flew. We can't be selective with history.

Let me answer you one after the other.

1. If the producer of Living in Bondage did not produce that movie, there would definitely have been another movie and Oh yes! There would have been Nollywood today. That's why God does not give one person the monopoly of any idea. It flows through several minds at the same time. If you latch on fast, you take the credit and if you do not, you live forever with the regret of not moving on time.

2. Unfortunately for you, the internet is a window to the world and yes the world knows Papa Ajasco. Take it! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_of_Nigeria

Living in Bondage,”the Igbo language movie directed byChris Obi Rapu, written by Kenneth Nnebue and Okechukwu Ogunjiofor (aka “Paulo”),for Kenneth Nnebue’s NEK Video Links in 1992, has become synonymous with the beginning of Nollywood, but the fact is, Nnebue actually produced 40 home videos in Yorùbá language before making his first Igbo language movie. The first Nigerian home video is“Ekun”in 1984 by thelate Muyideen Alade Aromire, a popular Yoruba actor, filmmaker and founder of Yotomi TV, who studied TV and film production in Cologne, Germany. The video in VHS format was made before Kenneth Nnebue’s first Yorùbá home video“Aje Ni’ya Mi”in 1989. Today, Nollywood, including Kannywood of the booming Hausa genre is attracting movie buffs, film students and film scholars and also investors.

I really really tried not to reply you... For God sake!! I ! Am! Not! Yoruba!

To answer your first question "Nollywood is a sobriquet that originally referred to the Nigerian film industry."

Infact , it was untill 2002 it was referred to as "Nollywood".

I couldn't care less whatever tribe did the movie first, I am just explaining the facts which are very clear.

Nollywood is way older than that movie . These are things we learnt as children in fine art, and Herbert Ogunde's movies serve as very great examples. What else do you want to hear?

If its about recognition, he got a lot of international recognitions , even from the British Broadcasting cooperation.

I love what the igbo's did. Lovely movies. Till today, their impact on Nollywood is really great; but history would not be bent over tribalistic feeling.

That is why I gave you a link on wikipedia to read up and get a better understanding that in as much as he was a theatre man , he made movies...

Google this thing! Read a book! Broaden your horizon and drop that tribalistic sentimental bull shit!

angry

I dont know what is wrong with you nairalanders and tribalism.

You see. That is the problem with you young ones, lack of humility.
I just mentioned and listed films that are Nigerian films even with national popularity and you can easily and humbly read about them online.
There are films like Block busters like Aiye by Hubert Ogunde Group,Taxi Driver by Ade Love the father of the popular Afolayan brothers, Duro Ladipo group that were the awada kerikeri group, Baba Sala with that film he was shown committing suicide in a train track and so many other films of Nigerian actors and theater you may be too young to know and can easily read on.
Nollywood never started with living in bondage and it is pure ignorance to say that publicly.
The English-Igbo genre of Nigerian films came to the table very very very late and that's why it lacked depth like the preexisting genre of Nigerian films led by the Hubert Ogunde et al.
I just corrected and educated you with love

Living in bondage and the rest opened up Nigerian Movies to every part of Nigeria and the world. Most of what you are listing are soaps played on NTAandsoe recorded stage drama.

You do not even know if I live in Lagos, and stop feeling inferior about Lagos, its just a place ; like every other.

Nobody ever said anything about the language used in his movies. You are just bringing up unnecessary things and making no significant point here Mr; sorry to say.

You say the man is a local champion , with all his international recognitions from the likes of British Broadcasting Cooperation?
Yet you call him a local champion? There is hardly an encyclopaedia I open and I dont see his name, even my old encyclopaedia in my pc; I just typed his name and saw a lot about the man.

Smh... The black man fails to realise English is also a local language to some people.

Please, read a book, do more research... I don't like embarrassing people like this.

Hubert Ogunde is not my relative or friend, neither is he my clans man or remotely close to my tribe.

I feel proper recognitions should be given when due. The man you call a local champion, is way more recognised than even the modern Nollywood actors you see today. Lets put tribalism aside and learn to reason straight.
