Benin — THE National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP), Benin zone, has arrested a Benin Chief, and four juju priests over alleged involvement in human trafficking.

The agency also alleged administering of oath to some girls who are trafficked abroad for prostitution.

According to the Benin zonal Head of NAPTIP, Barrister (Mrs) Olufunke Abiola, who spoke to Vanguard on the arrest of the Chief and the juju priests, the arrest of the Benin Chief of Benin Kingdom, is sequel to a petition by one Mrs Juliet Osifo who claimed that the chief sponsored her daughter, to Italy, enroute Libya but was trapped in Libya after she was arrested by the Libyan authorities.

She expressed worries over what she described as the incessant denials of the "fact that young girls of Benin decent are still in human trafficking and taken away for prostitution.

"Now as you would see, there is a very big case on hand that would prove to every body that no one is exempted, whether Benin, Urhobo, Itsekiri or Yoruba, every body is involved in this and it must stop.

"The young girls are ignorant. Like I said, sometimes, we find it difficult to prove a case against these traffickers because the girl will not want to expose her trafficker and apart from that, they are put under oath.

"So, this zone has been very very busy looking for all the juju priests that put some of the girls under oath. Some of them are even in our cell.

"We asked them to go and renounce that oath of the life of that girl so that the girl can feel free to be a human being because the oath ties them down spiritually."

The Chief, who spoke to Vanguard, admitted that his daughter in Italy requested he should bring the lady to Italy to assist her in her beer parlour, but that she was, however, stuck in Libya. "So what we are doing now is to see how we can bring her back to Nigeria so that she can stay with her parents,"he said.

Meanwhile, over 500 indigenes of Edo state who have been languishing in Libyan jails arrived Benin weekend, just as they appealed to both the state and federal governments to assist their colleagues who are still left in the Arab country to come back home to avert further deaths of the Nigerians.

What are you saying? You just listed two things that negatively affect the practice of human sacrifice and then ignore the reality that those factors will hamper the practice?

Difference between 100 years ago and now regarding human sacrifice:
1. Indisputably labeled a crime  - makes the practice more risky
2. Done in secret - makes the practice more arduous
3. Less adherents due to Christianity - means less people that view human sacrifice as okay
4. Less adherents due to education - means less people willing to be fooled by dirty old decrepit men chanting gibberish in smelly huts in remote locations
5. More efficient information flow - means more people are aware of the fraud called juju.
All of the above creates difficulties for an outdated practice.

The then famous Okija shrine was raided by policemen and the priest and maintainers of the shrine were arrested. If juju was as powerful as some people want us to believe, with all the fear-mongering talk, why didn't the Okija priests disappear or use their juju against the policemen? Plain old fraud!

You're correct that some Nigerian Christians don't practice what Christianity teaches, however, the few that do are still relevant to the discourse.




Maybe you're new on this forum, but long before I posted this article, I have argued on this forum about the fraudulent nature of ALL juju claims, not some but ALL of them.

Your supposition that my taking a stance on juju and my posting this article have a causal relation is premature. My stance on the fraud of juju is only a reiteration of my long-held view and not because of one article. I hope this is clear to you.

Nevertheless, the article puts in perspective, the fraudulent nature of juju claims.

While I agree that general "juju" efficiency idea is false, there is however a different
"proof" which you seem to ignore, it is good enough for gullible people to be wowed
by it.
It goes thus:


Juju Man: If you think my juju is a fraud drink this poison or touch this
item and you will start convulsing.

Audience: Echoes in agreement

Skeptic: I can't drink your poison.

Juju Man: You can all see for yourself that I am right, the skeptic is scared
shit of the power of my juju. Who else don't believe that I can conjure money, fly

Audience: We believe you.


The conclusion doesn't follow the argument, but it is sufficient for most believers.

When you said people openly sacrifice humans. For the record, it wasn't openly done. cultism (religion) is different from tradition. An occultic body might get hold of power in a particular region and change the tradition forcefully just like Sharia is forced on Persians because the ruling party believes in the Quran and Sharia laws. Christianity is same as Islam just that one has evolved to suit current society while the other is stuck in 2 millenniums ago.
Women were oppressed in the Bible as well as Quran whereas in ancient Africa, Women were seen as Creators, Leaders, Queens, Economic power, and a blessing to the society. Today, there is a reason why you don't find Christians challenging the laws of nature, unlike adherents to primitive belief systems. Christians and their pastors like Adeboye are in no delusion that they can cover the distance between Lagos and Houston by praying and fasting; no such claims can and ever will be made! They use commercial aviation, and the wealthy ones (that's another topic) have private jets to fly them around.

Fast forward to 2013, same Adeboye claimed tha the drove from Ore to Lagos without petrol in his car but only on prayers. I can conclude from this, that Adeboye and his christian followers are sure in a box of delusion .

I'm a Christian and I know that ALL juju claims are false. But I'm not alone. In my church (Lutheran), I belong to several youth clubs and we organize several activities within the church and in the wider community - teaching math and science, helping the old folks mow their lawns, painting homes for charity, etc. In our downtime/social gathering, I've brought up this issue of juju and explained in great detail many of the claims made by proponents of juju. I have news for you! Not a single one of them, all Christian, believed ANY of the juju claims that violate physical laws. The ones that made them laugh was when I described the corpse-to-currency juju. Those chaps laughed for days!
