AS the royal tussle over the proposal to have 32 beaded crown-wearing kings in Ibadanland conceived by Governor Abiola Ajimobi continues, 10 out of 11 members of Olubadan-in-Council have thrown their weight behind the governor saying the move would be beneficial to Ibadanland as a whole.

Their stance, however, negates that of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and Senator Rashidi Ladoja who refused to support the initiative. While speaking with newsmen at Ibadan House, Oke Are yesterday, all the high chiefs excluding two of them spoke one after the other in support of the review of 1957 Olubadan chieftaincy declaration which occasioned the proliferation of kings.

Led by the next-in-hierarchy to the Olubadan, High Chief Lekan Balogun, the council corroborated all the reasons given by the state government that the move did not have any political undertone but was intended to upgrade the Ibadan traditional system and accord more dignity to the city.

High Chief Balogun who was flanked by Osi Balogun, High Chiefs Ajibola Abimbola, Lateef Gbadamosi Adebimpe, Ashipa Balogun, Kola Adegbola, Ekaarun Balogun, Eddy Oyewole, Ashipa Otun Olubadan and Owolabi Olakulehin, Balogun of Ibadanland said, “we are not talking for the government. But we are absolutely in support of the proposal. In the past, if the Olubadan went to any meeting or function, unlike others who have kings on his entourage, Olubadan attended such function alone. Initially, all of us were against the move but when the governor invited us to a meeting, all of us including the Olubadan of Ibadan were there and we all agreed when we realized that the governor meant well for us”.

“We, as members of Olubadan-in-council, are completely in support of the proposal. Majority of us are with the government on this issue, the idea is to elevate Ibadan. Much as we support the government, we have no reason to disrespect our king, Olubadan of Ibadanland”, he said.

Another member of the council, High Chief Olakulehin, said “what some Yoruba youths said was nothing but mere propaganda. The youths said we want to change the system, nothing changes. If promotion comes, I will move to the next stage. God just called one of us, High Chief Olufemi Olaifa, the Otun Balogun who died. He has stopped being the Otun Balogun. It is Osi Balogun that will replace him. The crisis is blamed on the governor, but it is not so. We are all in support”.

On the divergent view that a former Governor of the state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja has on the issue, High Chief Olakulehin alleged that Ladoja was not happy that the review did not take place during his tenure.

He said, “Ladoja tried to do the review during his tenure but he failed. So, he doesn’t like someone who took over the mantle of leadership in the state to achieve the feat.”

Explaining why two other high chiefs were not in attendance, he said, “some of us had a hectic time last night because of the death of one of us, Olaifa. As we are talking now, some of us are with the family.”

When asked who is the consenting authority that will install the new kings, High chief Ajibola said since it was the governor who put the crown on the Olubadan and presented him with the staff of office, it is the same governor who will install the new kings. As of now, the power is in the hand of the governor. So, after the installation, the Olubadan of Ibadan can then start crowning the remaining kings”.

It's all about 5% derivation from Local government allocations. Come to think of it, the Olubadan must be one of the greatest beneficiaries of this derivation in Nigeria. While most kings take 5% allocation from 2 or 3 local governments under their domains at most , he's been collecting 5% from 11 local governments (or how many do they have currently) in Ibadan land.

Ladoja is being a hypocrite in this matter. He tried to do the exact same thing the current governor is about to do but could not due to his political problems at the time. Other governors before and after Ladoja also tried to implement this but couldn't for political considerations. The fact of the matter is that this is long over-due, and only a second-term governor can muster the political will to effect this change in the traditional system of the city. The decision is a unanimous one that enjoys the support of all relevant stakeholders.

There are some important and far-reaching decisions that some governors have to wait till their second term to implement (because by then they will have nothing to lose since they won't be standing for re-election again, so it is only natural that Ajimobi is the one finally taking this step since he's the first 2-term governor in the history of the state). The Olubadan should deal with the reality of times.

Niyi Akintola justifies the review
In justifying the Olubadan chieftaincy review, Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN), said the review was long overdue: “It was something that ought to have been done long time ago. I think the governor has done the right thing in that circumstance.

“In 1999, Alhaji Lam Adesina set up Oloko Judicial Commission of Inquiry. I was a counsel before that commission. My colleague, now Chief Babalola (SAN) based in Port Harcourt represented the Olubadan-In-Council. Recommendations were made by the commission, but there was no political will to implement the recommendations.

“Then, came former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, who put up Adio Commission of Inquiry. Also, former governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, did the same thing. But there were no political powers to implement the recommendations of the commissions. Virtually, every governor has tried his hand on that, but could not.

“In the olden days, we used to say a Mogaji (head of family) in Ibadan land was more than a king in other climes. There was a Mogaji in Ibadan that had under him Iwo, Ede, Osogbo, and Ikirun. That was why the titular heads of those towns would abandon their positions to come and contest to become Mogaji in Ibadan because they were practically under the control of the Mogajis.

“That was what was in place then. But times are changing. What was obtainable then is no longer tenable now. Look at how big Moniya is, it is bigger than some state capitals in this country. Look at Omi-Adio, it is a cosmopolitan big town. By 2006 population census, it was 186,000. Yet, you expect the Olomi of Omi to be under a Mogaji in Ibadan town. That was what those governors have been trying to correct. Unfortunately, they did not have the political will to do so.

“Now, if you look at what is happening around us, Olubadan of Ibadan land, when he is going out, there are no Obas to follow him, yet he is the paramount ruler of the entire Ibadan.

“From Moniya to High Court at Ring Road is 47 kilometres. By the time you pass through Ring Road to Ago Tailor, and through Aleshinloye and you box out at Ojoo, you would have covered 92 kilometres in the same town; and you have not even reached Apata.

“That is why the Land Use Act Implementation Law could not be applied fully in Oyo State because of the distance. The implementation law says 15 kilometres radius, but within Ibadan, you have 92 kilometres. So, every other area is now rural under the Land Use Act. People don’t appreciate the position of the law on this. All these are interwoven.

“There have been agitation for this for long, even under Chief Bola Ige, there was. He fell short of setting up judicial commission of inquiries. At every point in time, except the present one, I had appeared as a counsel in all the past three judicial commission of inquiries.”

Each king will ave his own palace and also earn salary. Get official car and staff of office. Which means the state government will spend more.

But the economic/cultural benefit of a Ibadan having 2-3 kings per LG has not been mentioned. How will these ceremonial figureheads increase the GDP of Ibadan? What exactly is their contribution?

Am I the only that can't see the benefit of those stupid move?

Constituted authority that can't pay salaries is thinking of creating more revenue draining avenues.

I pity the people of OYO state with this nonsense from the governor. More resources will be used to feed these Oba's. Is the governor insane?

Ajimobi is just playing politics to destabilize Ibadan, these elders needs to use their heads. there's no need for olubadan to argue with Mr. Constituted Authority as everything will be corrected after 2019.
