We all know how flawed the national Nigerian statistics are re. majority tribes and their respective populations, so who do you think is the biggest of the three major clans - Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba? |

I think it should be Igbos or Yorubas but certainly not Hausas because the people we refer to as Hausas maybe Fulanis, Kanuris, Shuwa arabs, Bauchi, Nupe e.t.c. Almost all northern muslims are generalized as Hausa because Hausa is a lingua franca im the north. 7 Likes |

Should be Yoruba. Followed by Hausa Followed by Igbo Followed by Fulani Most Widespread does not equal to most Populous. Gypsies are widespread across Europe but are not as populated as let's say Germans for example. So while Igbos are widespread in Nigeria, that does not make them number 1. Henryyy: You might be right though. It is either Hausa or Yoruba. The reason I am not sure about Hausa is because "Hausa" has become a muddled up ethnicity losing its distinctiveness. Do you know for example that many tribes in Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, Kaduna are not Hausas? And these are in the Core Northern states o. And we haven't even talked about the issue of the Fulanis who are another ethnic group living among Hausas and referred to as Hausas, but who are infact not Hausas. 9 Likes |

Then Hausas would have it if you include that. There are millions of Igbos in every States of the Federation. How many Yorubas are outside of Yoruba land compared to Igbos? Cire80:landmass? who is talking about landmass? Irrelevant. Cire80: This is based on the ONLY data we have: Census. Hausa-Fulani is #1 in population; then Yoruba; then Igbo. But Hausa-Fulani is two tribes which makes Yoruba #1 most populated SINGLE tribe. Cire80:Don't be silly. We talking NIGERIA's population. And no the Hausa's still would not have it. Use your brain. I've read recently that Fulani and Hausa people number 19 and 29 people in Nigeria respectively. Igbos have been ranked at anywhere from 32 to 40 million and, while I'm not saying whether the Yoruba population is higher than the Igbo one, can you honestly say that you're not ranking Igbo at no. 3 just to spite Igbos, AkanPhysicist? |

Probz: Nigeria has a current population of about 174 million. 29% (50 million) of that is Hausa-Fulani; 21% (37 million) is Yoruba; and ONLY 18% (31 million) is Igbo. (Source:CIA World Factbook Population Statistics). Since there are 17 million Fulanis in Nigeria, that means that Yorubas are the most populous tribe in Nigeria. YonkijiSappo: I served in Ilasa Ekiti and I know that Igbos reside there alot talk less of Omuo-Oke where they even celebrate one of the mass in Igbo language. We need an appropriate and near perfect censor to capture facts rather us making baseless assumptions. |

Outside perhaps Lagos which is actually a potpourri of ethnicities, nowhere else outside Igboland and maybe Delta state do Igbos have populations as much as a million. #Fact Fayose once said publicly said there are close to 30,000 igbos in Ekiti (the smallest state in the SW), they can't be more than 30,000 -50,000 max or thereabout in Osun (if not lesser), maybe anywhere between 30,000 - 50,000 (max) of them in each of the remaining Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, and Kwara states as well. These are states that have an estimated total population of between 3 - 10million each. Altogether they are most definitely far from being up to 1-million of them residing in the SW states outside Lagos (yes, I know they like throwing around 'millions' here and there but that's just them doing their usual unsubstantiated chest-beating). I laughed when I once read about some igbos in Benue who said they are a marginalized minority in the state, yet they claimed to be more than a million in population in Benue. . Abeg if they are that many in Benue where would that leave the Tivs, Idomas and other major natives of the state? What is the overall population of Benue? Na just their usual penchant for throwing around 'millions'. Me i know there is a large (Infact Huge) Population of Yorubas in Niger state. Kontagora, Minna, Bida, Lapai, Mokwa, Suleja etc. Both those stationed there permanently and those there for other stuff such as Educational reasons. The Oduduwa student union's for example are the largest student unions in many higher institutions there, Bida Poly, Fut Minna etc. That's why even if we say Igbos are spread across the country- we can't entirely dismiss the presence of Yorubas settled in large number in other parts of Nigeria as well. Ukaegbuagbaieni: Not true. There have ALWAYS been estimates of ethnic demographics based in part on number of homesteads. And based on those Yorubas have the highest population of any single ethnic group. Ukaegbuagbaieni:Igbos are more visible because most engage in trade. Igbo are the most populous. In every state in Nigeria were Igbos are not indigenes, they come second in terms of population. In Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Abuja, Sokoto, and all other states they are always second after the indigenes of the state. In Igbo states of course they come first. Those saying igbos are the most populated tribe are ignorant... Only the people living in Ibadan are more than 3 igbo states combined not to talk of other Yoruba state... Do the calculation... no igbo state is more than Yoruba state in population so how can you say igbo is more than Yoruba... remember Yoruba are 20% of Kaduna and Kano.... go to Kaduna you'll see more Yorubas their 5 Likes 2 Shares |

So the whole south east ( Anambra, imo, enugu, abia, ebonyi ) = 15, 431, 555 south west (Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, ogun, Lagos ) = 25, 221, 332 and their are significant igbos in South south.... also their are significant Yoruba in North and also in South West states,,, their are 10-15 % of igbos in South West .. in each state of South West ( they aren't upto that, it's just assumption) in the north igbos are not up to 5% Also their are 20 - 25%of Yoruba in Kaduna and Kano each ...
