Coolant Reservoir Overflows by gbolly707(m): 11:10am On Sep 09, 2017
Good day.

Car is a a 2000 toyota Camry, I drove with the thermostat stuck open for more than a year. I changed the thermostat less than a month ago and I bled the system and filled with total coolant. I noticed that the coolant overflows from the coolant reservoir, I saw the mark on the container. Should I be worried , could be a case of system overfill or a more serious underlying issue.

Thank you

Signs of overheating if you are sure you didn't fill up past the full mark
Re: Coolant Reservoir Overflows by gbolly707(m): 11:51am On Sep 09, 2017
I did not fill up past the full mark. The temperature guage gets to and stays at the middle.
Re: Coolant Reservoir Overflows by mayor2013: 11:53am On Sep 09, 2017
When car is warmed up touch coolant hose. Check if its strong when been felt. If its strong when engine is properly warmed up then you have an overheating issue

Thank you mayor, I will do that and get back to you

Ignore this advice before you get High BP. Every pressurised hose will feel hard when touched.

Replace pressure cap.

Thank you gazzuzz, pressure cap of the radiator or that of the coolant reservoir?,
Oh from the picture attached, it is that of the radiator.
Thank you once again
Re: Coolant Reservoir Overflows by Nobody: 1:38pm On Sep 09, 2017
Bad pressure cap or air in the cooling system. If it's the latter then bleed. Did a coolant drain on FX35 recently and car started having similar symptoms. The reservoir started overflowing and almost boiling. Changed cap, no change. Bled the system and everything returned to normal.

@greenhulk is there any special precaution to bleeding the system. I tot I bled it before I started having this issue

It depends on the car, I don't know about 2000 Camry but for the FX35 I followed user manual and FX35 forums with YouTube videos and did it myself.

Your radiator cap is bad it unable to hold the pressure which is why ur reservoir is overfilling.
You will get this same symptom too if you have leaking headgasket .

Let the op be sure he is experiencing an overheating issue. In order to be sure. Carry out a coolant pressure test. This would reveal what is actually going on

Replace pressure cap.

Maybe some cars like mine are different I don't see mine hardened

REPLACE PRESSURE CAP Once had similar issue on same car and that solved the issue.

Did the issue start after the thermostat installation?

If yes, kindly confirm if thermostat was installed properly taking into consideration the alignment of the jiggle valve.

Secondly, ensure radiator cap still seals properly.

Finally, be on the lookout for head gasket symptoms.

Cheers

Cannot be installed the other way round

I did not infer installation the other way round.

I said he should take account of the jiggle valve.

You can re-read my earlier post again for clarification.

Cheers

yeah you right, but. If memory serves me well it has a fixed mark position on the housing.

I drove the car with the thermostat stuck open for a long time, i noticed the issue after the thermostat replacement.

i will change the radiator cap during the week and give the house a feedback.

As regards the head gasket symptom a quick check on the internet states symptoms as
* leaking coolant
*milky engine oil
* overheating
*bubbles in the radiator
* oil traces in the coolant reservoir

I have not noticed any of these symptoms.

Good day everyone... I am having the same issues as with the Op, just that this car is a Nissan Primera P11. Temp gauge stays in the middle, with no visible signs of overheating or coolant leak. I saw this thread last week and I did as advised, wch is changing the radiator cap. However, the issue persists.

Now my question is : Should the coolant reservoir tank be completely air tight? because I noticed there's a small opening along the upper part of the plastic tank Wch I'm not too sure if that's how it was made or a part broke off.

I've tried 2 new radiator caps now, yet the reservoir coolant level goes beyond the max mark. Pls what else can be done?

The reservoir tank is designed to have an opening for self-bleeding so that is the design. Apart from the bad cap ,headgasket issue can also cause also cause overflowing of the reservoir tank cos headgasket leaking into the cooling system will build up unnecessary pressure into the cooling system
Go for compression test to confirm the status of your headgasket!!Your cooling system need to be checked by a professional !!!

No other signs pointing to cooling issues or blown head gasket. I'll try to change the radiator cap one more time... Maybe the two new ones are bad as well. I'll consider the tests also
Thnks

remove the radiator cap, clean the base and take a clear pic.

If you are in Lagos ,contact me @my signature I have some couple of tested and confirmed radiator cap for nissan I can pass across to you and after using it and u still have the same issue ,then you need to check other areas.
More so ,from experience I have seen alot of headgasket issue so subtle ( minute coolant leak) that it will require dedicated equipment to detect them .
