FIRS To Recruit 7,500 Graduates And 5,000 Non-Graduates by 40ng: 8:41am On Sep 15, 2017
The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun has announced plans by Nigerian government to recruit 7,500 graduates as Community Tax Liaison Officers to raise tax awareness among citizens thereby increasing the number of tax payers.

Adeosun, along with the Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr BabaTunde Fowler made this known at a joint media briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

This move according to Adeosun has become necessary owning to the very low number of persons captured in Nigeria’s Tax Database.

FIRS on August 29th commences recuirtment of Tax Liaison Officers .
She said that through this initiative, the government expected to increase the number of taxpayers by 35 percent from 14 million to about 17 million in two years.

“We will be recruiting them through N-Power and they can apply through the website of the Federal Ministry of Finance or through the N-Power website.

“It’s a two-year fixed contract and they will be deployed to states, attached to state Internal Revenue Service or FIRS.

“Their job is to improve the level of education on the Nigeria’s tax system.

“Our tax system is progressive, meaning those who earn less should pay less and those who earn more should pay more.

“A lot of people don’t know that. So it’s a chance to get people on ground to answer all these pertinent questions,” she said.

Adeosun said that graduates of accounting, economics, mathematics and other relevant courses would be given priority under the programme.

She, however, encouraged intelligent graduates interested in a career in tax administration to apply as the government planned to sponsor the recruits to become tax professionals.

“This exercise is extremely important for the fiscal sustainability of states because as you know, most of the revenue for states apart from FAAC is supposed to come from tax.

“So if we improved the number of taxpayers, we will be improving the fiscal health of our state governments as well as the Federal Government.

“It’s an important initiative for the nation as we undertake reforms to reduce our over-dependence on oil.

“We have to make sure that everyone who is economically active pays tax, no matter how little, they have to contribute to the pool,” she said.

Good move from the FGN.

The Agberos we see at the Bust stops generate Billions of Naira daily/monthly in Lagos alone. Government need to stop those Agberos and replace them with educated un-employed youths all over the country. This system will create thousands of jobs. Though, it will be difficult at first because most Governors and past Governors are benefitting from the proceed as they are also used for political victimization. the Governors will likely frustrate the effort.

In Ogun State, there is certain percentages of daily tolls collection from Okada and Keke-Napep operators going to the incumbent Governor (Ibikunle Amosu) and so Gbenga Daniel former Governor. The state Governors have seen that, it is one major avenue to enrich themselves without dipping their hands in the state Treasury. We have this practice all over the country and one major reasons the Agberos are sacred cows.

Just 14 million tax payers out of 100 million tax eligible citizens (a guess tho)! Nigeria just weak me. It is now they (the government) realise that tax revenue is much more important after wasting the revenues from the crude oil over the years. Even if they collect taxes, are they not going to embezzle the money?. Recruiting less than 20,000 unemployed and paying them less than $100 monthly ($1200) is nothing to write home about.. It is high time we turn the economic system to Capitalist economy. We need real time investment apart from building hotels and petrol filling stations.. Government emphasis should be on the industrial sector of the economy. If we continue this way we still lag behind the world powers..

Tax this! Tax that! Tax! Tax! Tax!......
Tax the top guns, the dangotes, the otedolas, multinationals, Unilever, cocacola etc.
Leave out the Babar, the small provision store in the street, small bar owner, petty market women! Government leave an average Nigerian with his/her SME struggling to survive in this harshest economic environment equally created by the government.

It's a fixed 2 years NPOWER contract not a full time employment.

Other govt establishments will soon start keying into this format of using NPOWER for cheap labor instead of doing actual recruitment...

But wait o, all those posters above and below, are u sure u read the article b4 commenting ?

We will be recruiting them through N-Power and they can apply through the website of the Federal Ministry of Finance or through the N-Power website.

This is rubbish. Nigeria's labor laws has gone to the dogs. The government has taken the "contract staff" initiative and now employs graduates and underpaying them under the guise of "empowerment."

She, however, encouraged intelligent graduates interested in a career in tax administration to apply as the government planned to sponsor the recruits to become tax professionals.

This is bigger rubbish. Will her children apply? Listen to her at your peril.
