This is just my opinion; There will be less private Sector accounting Jobs in the Future because of avallable Automation accounting software and data/ numbers processing and analysis software.

Which automation tool? For any accounting software u are the one to use your brain to determine how u want an item to be treated. Then talking about accounting it is broad it not just about financial accouniting. Although I support your point that it is not necessary to study it in school.

Well, I think chartered accountants in Nigeria should start learning new skills as the market is quite saturated. I noticed this as far back as 2007/08 when I was still writing my ACCA(which I had to leave partially to go hustle). I noticed there were too many chartered accountants around me then, who had the misfortune of earning peanuts just to survive(although, most of them were ICAN chartered). The trend then, was for any accounting student, to register for ICAN/ACCA but very few companies could absorb all the ACAs coming out. Most of them ended up in small audit firms. I know a guy who used to earn 30k then, and was working on the island, and was married with kids...

I intend to go back to finish my ACCA just so I can have the certificate but not necessarily to use it in looking for a job. Most chartered accountants end up as auditors and to be sincere, I do not like the auditing part of financial accounting cos I see it as boring. Chartered accountants should look at getting other skills.

Hmmm.. When we talk about jobs that will soon leave the hands of humans, we talk about accountancy. Op, while still looking for that placement, make sure you have something else doing to help yourself financially. Visit my signature for business ideas.

One thing is to understand software another is to understand the accounting procedures, rules, ethics. Without accounting knowledge, you just wasting your time operating software

Without the ethics, standards and procedures you are wasting your time operating the software. Besides accounting has many branches such as audit, management, taxation etc. Haven't seen a software that audit a company.

Do softwares run themselves? Accounting has moved beyond merely recording transactions.

Trash. Accounting softwares cannot operate themselves. They're just there to make your job easier.

And there's audit and taxation.

Op, don't let illiterate persons lead you astray.

If you're not an accountant or a budding accountant, this thread is not for you.

To a large extent many automation tools can post recurrent transactions and would only need an accountant to run end of month e.t.c.

What accountants have to fear is that a lot of non-value-added services would surely be replaced by automation.

Having said that the future of accountants lie in their ability to be experts in data analysis, AI, e.t.c and more importantly being able to add value to your clients.

Truthfully... with the way Nigeria is evolving, where fake audits are stamped on by chartered accountants backed up with bribe for acceptance at the neccessary bodies, it would only get to a time we would have too many accountants begging for jobs because of less companies to audit.. its happening already, get to one or two audit firms... they are all into TAMA auditing shops except you have the right legs..

In my final year in the University, as an accounting student, I realized there was no special selling point in the accounting profession so I quickly changed my gear soon as I graduated and specialized in a more rewarding skill that will reward my parents investments.

Don't mind @ profcamsey he has myopic knowledge in the accounting world. Sage50 cannot operate itself. Accounting knowledge is required to set up the software. Chart of account, receivables, etc

Chartered Accountants ain't Accounting graduates. I read a report that 1000+ companies were registered in 6 months. these companies needs finance and accounting Dept.
Can softwares perform business analysis? Can they give tax advice? Can they give leadership and directions?
Being chartered ain't only about becoming a financial accountant but a professional in other fields like specializing on financial analysis, audit, tax etc

You are correct to a certain extent that 'judgement' is required in areas like Audit and Tax, but already artificial intelligence is being used for tax advisory in Australia. Deep learning and artificial intelligence can allow machines to imitate out thought process.

In audit, Big Data is being used around the world to identify trends , possibility of frauds , mistatements, creative accounting and the whole shebang.

So accountants need to be experts this days and 'add value' the 'machines' are coming and we need to be prepared

Accounting profession is more to bank hall. Any body can work in the banking industry. Don't use this premise to derive your conclusion about accounting profession.

It might interest you to know that Nigeria has < 50,000 (Dead and Living) Chartered Accountants to a population of 200 million Nigerians. So is the future of the profession bright? I'd leave you to decide
