My opinion WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY clearly not the best use of resources $600 million.
Many of us most likely would prefer a totally different type of aircraft to the Tucano. I for one would have preferred the J-10, MIG-35 or the JF-17.

Be that as it may, the Tucano is still and will always be a very brilliant acquisition for the Nigerian Air Force. I have always advocated for the Tucano, although not at the expense of a proper 4 Gen multi-role fighter.

The Tucano is intended to replace our ageing Alpha jets in the light attack role. It is this role where the Tucanos is King.

The Tucano is a very modern aircraft that can carry all modern Air-to-Ground ammunition, Data-link, has a very brilliant loiter time, is cost effective to fly and is combat proven in some of the most hostile combat zones.

It is very far from being a waste of resource, it fills it's own niche in the Air Force combat structure.

* There is a need for the A-29 it fulfills a certain role and a certain Niche.
I just want to say this for educational purposes the A-29 and the Spitfire are not the same there are only two things they have in common
their speed ( 368 m.p.h) and the fact that they are both propeller driven.
The difference in Range 423 Miles versus 2,995 should give an indicator of how different they are.
The A-29 relies on precision driven technology while the other is ww2 technology, more critically is the issue of one plane using missiles while the other used rockets, I will hold my peace.
It is important that Nigeria gets this Plane with the accompanying infrastructure, logistics , training and other essentials that go along with it.
Lastly the JF-17s to the best of everyone's knowledge have not been cancelled , so everyone should calm down, let us wait till the Chief of Air staff speaks on the issue.

Tucano and Spitfire comparisons are infantile. That said, I'll be pleasantly surprised if Nigeria gets the Tucano in this current session. Republican Trump has not been able to get anything approved by the Republican-controlled Congress and Senate. What does Nigeria offer to Jacksonville, Florida -besides the 12 aircraft- that compels those representatives to lobby their 480+ counterparts to approve this transaction? The US House and Senate Sessions are in congruence from Sept 25 after the summer recess and no mention of Nigeria's acquisition so far.
Of course, I won't mention Obama approved this sale and a Republican Congress blocked it: why spoil a neat narrative?

Hate to get into an argument over a dead issue.
Congress has approved.
State Department bastion of the left has approved
Defence department through the Pentagon has approved it and
45 who also could of approved it through a waiver has already signed off on it.
The deal is done.
There is nothing more to add.
Obama deep down IMHO never intended to sell this Plane with the accompanying bombs and logistics to Nigeria and he is gone with his left wing buddies at the State Department.
Lastly Nigeria has $600M to offer to the U.S.that is why in 45's mind the sale is done.

The Super Tucano is a single engined turboprop plane made in Brazil. There is nothing particularly unique or ground breaking in its airframe.

HOWEVER, what is the difference huh

It has been fitted with a whole range of modern day avionics. HUD, FLIR, MAWS,MDP, and of course the various weapons system it can carry and deploy. It has some limited Kevlar pilot protection but thats about it.

Options there are a multitude of available airframes with similar power to weigh ratio at a a fraction of the price. It's not rocket science but we should have the capacity to buy a much cheaper airframe and retro fit it with all the HUD, FLIR, MAWS and needed weapon systems at a fraction of the cost.

Best value and most judicious and effective use of resources. CERTAINLY NOT. Consider the Sukhoi 25 Frogfoot (Flying tank) the nick name is very descriptive of its capabilities. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the Tucano depending on variant but there are several retro upgrades available by S.African, Isreali and German companies. The Su25M is actually way more effective in every regard it can take anti aircraft fire and survive even to some degree Infra red missiles, depending on strike point. Has DIRCM if you enter into further hostile territory changing its mission configuration. You can land a Frogfoot almost on any rudimentary airfield and it's operating costs are even lower than the Tucano. By the way in times of desperation it can run on low grade fuel shockingly I have had reports of diesel fuel. How much does it cost under $10 million if you go for refurbished depending on how you procure and retro fit. You really could be talking of less than $6/7 million per unit. That's about 24 aircraft for less than $240 million if you procure new and have time to wait. Or half that price if you buy from the eastern block countries with retrofit and or just go directly to Russia. Having 24 aircraft that although not supersonic with full load. Fast enough to deploy within 5/7 minutes anywhere in the North east. That is essentially 24 hr non stop immediate coverage on multiple targets when identified. But add to that lower operational costs, survivability with far more efficacy and a 30 year life span on the airframe. Compared to my estimation $40+ million per unit Tucano in my opinion and far less effective , it's a No brainer.

Which would you rather have
huh huh huh

Remember just one lucky hit on those Tucano's and it's all over, $40+ million per unit. Particularly, with the noisy turboprop you can hear it well before it gets to you unlike the Frogfoot. Giving Boko gunners an easy target with those anti aircraft HMG they have across North East.

Very well then, the 50 Cal machine gun was debuted in WWII, yet it is still in active service up till this day. The Super Tucano has an air-frame that works perfectly in the threat environment it is going to be deployed in. With all the most modern avionics available in the market and an exciting weapons package. It is a light attack aircraft, it is not built to be deployed as a Tank Destroyer, so why compare it to the SU-25?

Vehicles are built with intended roles in mind, take the Main Battle Tank as an example, Why don't armies deploy them as Patrol vehicles? Afterall, it is the most protected vehicle in the inventory of most militaries.

Well, we tried to purchase 6 units of Israeli upgraded SU-25s during the GEJ regime, but that was shot down due to the exorbitant price quoted by the contractors. You also cannot fly second hand airframes for 30-35 years. Unlike what we would get with the A-29.

I'd rather have a Tucano over the SU-25 in a light attack/Recon role.

brother I really don't know why we are even thinking of buying those planes and to consider the fact that we ve been bidding for them since 2012. Other serious Air Force have inducted so many classes of aircraft's since then. The SU25, THE Yak 130 and so many aircraft will fulfill it's role and so many other roles by also serving as trainers for future pilots on a jet propelled platform. But somehow the thing just tire me. E dey weak me Wen people will be designing the aircraft like it is the best that can happen. Many better jets are out there and for cheaper and less humbling conditions.

If we buy those aircraft to fight terror what happens when the war against terror is over? Are we going to send them into storage or use them as trainers for our pilots? Why is the jet so expensive? Even if they are building the needed infrastructure to sustain the jet here the cost is too much for just twelve turboprops.another question is isn't it foolish to spend so much on a sophisticated turboprop? there are too many questions to be asked my brother.

And I strongly believe we are not asking them. 12 turboprops for more than 500 million dollars to fight terror. Then the terrorists have won already na. If they can force us to tie such amount on an aircraft that cannot and will not adapt to the dynamic and elvoving future threats that may face the nation then why buy it then.

If they are purchasing 3 or 6 it's understandable not a whooping 12 of a plane that could best be used by farmers for spreading insecticide on a carrot farm. It is just the equivalent of giving a Camry an expensive refub and then calling it a sport car and saying it can hold it's own against other sport cars in the race track.

In my own opinion the Tucano is another example of the incompetence and unpatriotic attitude of our leaders. Because of 12 turboprops that you want to use to attack terrorists which you have already better desimated without these planes, the Senate of a well recognised country is busy telling the world that your Armed Forces is unprofessional and they abuse and kill civilians. Yet you ve seen no reasons to stop any further bid of arm procurement from that country. You keep bidding and every year they keep telling the world that you have an unprofessional Armed Forcesand you kept it up, as if you are the sponsor of an elaborate smear campaign against yourself.

With such remarks from its main sponsor our Armed Forces have lost its credibility on the UN and other international organizations, making us somewhat of the last nation that would be selected to join a peace keeping intervention anywhere outside ECOWAS Now if God Forbid we didn't get this jet it would take our Armed Forces years and years to rebuild the trust and confidence of the international system that took many men their lives and limbs to build in some of the hottest conflict that Africa was recorded in Africa, imagine all this nonsense for a bird that would not reflect national pride, that would not in any way tilt the regional balance of power in our favor.

And all this for a bird that would only fly for one season.

Those saying the jets is best suited for the Niger Delta militant crises may be right, but is the Niger Delta a war zone, does that justify the procurement of 12 well armed flightless war planes?

The Nigerian Leaders of today really know nothing about national pride. A course in international relations and strategy should be a requirement for leadership to avoid all this nonsense. All the men that ever made Nigeria proud got theirs from the institute of strategy at Jos, Plateau Obasanjo and Murtala including.
but some ignoramus just go out there and stand in front of the whole world and make funny comments about North Korea. If the boy threathen us now we will start begging America for Javelin to shoot down ballistic missile, because that is how we buy things, not because it is effective but because it look like something that can be effective.

"The Super Tucano is a single engined turboprop plane made in Brazil. There is nothing particularly unique or ground breaking in its airframe."
The A29s that Nigeria will be getting will manufactured in the U.S.
A key point to remember is quality control and life expectancy. Nigeria bought her C-130S in the late 70s they are still being flown today .Likewise when these planes arrive at least two years from now they will still be flying 30 years from now.
You cannot compare the SU25 frogfoot( which incidentally has been in the news lately for being shot down a lot) to the A29. They are two completely different planes. Most U.S. planes have a version of what is called the Titanium Bathtub since the VIETNAM WAR. It is expected the A29s will come with a similar type of version.
To the best of my knowledge not a Single A29 has been shot down by the Taliban in Afghanistan , and if the U.S. still has it's own pilots flying this little bird if it is good for US PILOTS it is good enough for Nigerian pilots .Reputedly it has a range of 3,000 miles which gives it extensive loiter time at a time we don't have a plane that can do that and will be the first dedicated aircraft in the NAF 'S Inventory dedicated to Coin and Asymmetric warfare the NAF most definitely need to get this Aircraft.

CAS PLAYS HOST TO CHIEF OF SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY, DISCUSSES ISSUES OF COOPERATION FOR ENHANCED SECURITY

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar, played host to the Chief of South African Navy (CSAN), Vice Admiral Mosiwa Samuel Hlongwane at the Headquarters Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on 27 September 2017. The South African Naval boss was on a working visit to Nigeria on the invitation of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, who had earlier visited South Africa in March 2017. During the visit to CAS, issues bordering on security cooperation and the need to grow the capabilities of African security forces in responding to emerging security threats were discussed.

Vice Admiral Hlongwane informed the CAS that he was in Nigeria on a reciprocal visit to advance the ties between the Nigerian and South African Navies in order to promote regional integration and enhance maritime security in Africa. The CSAN disclosed that it was necessary to pay a courtesy visit to the CAS due to the numerous strategic partnerships between the NAF and the South Africa Defence sector, noting that the partnerships had yielded positive results towards the projection of air power on the continent and beyond. While expressing his appreciation for the warm reception, Vice Admiral Hlongwane informed the CAS that the discussions held with his Nigerian counterpart would enhance the development of maritime security in Africa.

In his response, Air Marshal Abubakar harped on the need for the armed forces of African nations to consolidate efforts, both at continental and sub-regional levels, by harnessing their respective expertise to address the Continent’s security challenges. According to the CAS, the security challenges cannot be resolved by single country, adding that it is only in partnership with other countries that the desired security goal could be achieved. Air Marshal Abubakar then thanked Vice Admiral Hlongwane for sharing his experiences with the Nigerian Navy while reiterating his optimism that the exchange of information and ideas would add value to the security efforts in Nigeria. The South African Navy Chief has returned to South Africa after a successful working visit to Nigeria.
