God bless you for this piece of article
sad sad sad sad
overhypedsteve:
brother I really don't know why we are even thinking of buying those planes and to consider the fact that we ve been bidding for them since 2012. Other serious Air Force have inducted so many classes of aircraft's since then. The SU25, THE Yak 130 and so many aircraft will fulfill it's role and so many other roles by also serving as trainers for future pilots on a jet propelled platform. But somehow the thing just tire me. E dey weak me Wen people will be designing the aircraft like it is the best that can happen. Many better jets are out there and for cheaper and less humbling conditions.

If we buy those aircraft to fight terror what happens when the war against terror is over? Are we going to send them into storage or use them as trainers for our pilots? Why is the jet so expensive? Even if they are building the needed infrastructure to sustain the jet here the cost is too much for just twelve turboprops.another question is isn't it foolish to spend so much on a sophisticated turboprop? there are too many questions to be asked my brother.

And I strongly believe we are not asking them. 12 turboprops for more than 500 million dollars to fight terror. Then the terrorists have won already na. If they can force us to tie such amount on an aircraft that cannot and will not adapt to the dynamic and elvoving future threats that may face the nation then why buy it then.

If they are purchasing 3 or 6 it's understandable not a whooping 12 of a plane that could best be used by farmers for spreading insecticide on a carrot farm. It is just the equivalent of giving a Camry an expensive refub and then calling it a sport car and saying it can hold it's own against other sport cars in the race track.

In my own opinion the Tucano is another example of the incompetence and unpatriotic attitude of our leaders. Because of 12 turboprops that you want to use to attack terrorists which you have already better desimated without these planes, the Senate of a well recognised country is busy telling the world that your Armed Forces is unprofessional and they abuse and kill civilians. Yet you ve seen no reasons to stop any further bid of arm procurement from that country. You keep bidding and every year they keep telling the world that you have an unprofessional Armed Forcesand you kept it up, as if you are the sponsor of an elaborate smear campaign against yourself.

With such remarks from its main sponsor our Armed Forces have lost its credibility on the UN and other international organizations, making us somewhat of the last nation that would be selected to join a peace keeping intervention anywhere outside ECOWAS Now if God Forbid we didn't get this jet it would take our Armed Forces years and years to rebuild the trust and confidence of the international system that took many men their lives and limbs to build in some of the hottest conflict that Africa was recorded in Africa, imagine all this nonsense for a bird that would not reflect national pride, that would not in any way tilt the regional balance of power in our favor.

And all this for a bird that would only fly for one season.

Those saying the jets is best suited for the Niger Delta militant crises may be right, but is the Niger Delta a war zone, does that justify the procurement of 12 well armed flightless war planes?

The Nigerian Leaders of today really know nothing about national pride. A course in international relations and strategy should be a requirement for leadership to avoid all this nonsense. All the men that ever made Nigeria proud got theirs from the institute of strategy at Jos, Plateau Obasanjo and Murtala including.
but some ignoramus just go out there and stand in front of the whole world and make funny comments about North Korea. If the boy threathen us now we will start begging America for Javelin to shoot down ballistic missile, because that is how we buy things, not because it is effective but because it look like something that can be effective.

"The Super Tucano is a single engined turboprop plane made in Brazil. There is nothing particularly unique or ground breaking in its airframe."
The A29s that Nigeria will be getting will manufactured in the U.S.
A key point to remember is quality control and life expectancy. Nigeria bought her C-130S in the late 70s they are still being flown today .Likewise when these planes arrive at least two years from now they will still be flying 30 years from now.
You cannot compare the SU25 frogfoot( which incidentally has been in the news lately for being shot down a lot) to the A29. They are two completely different planes. Most U.S. planes have a version of what is called the Titanium Bathtub since the VIETNAM WAR. It is expected the A29s will come with a similar type of version.
To the best of my knowledge not a Single A29 has been shot down by the Taliban in Afghanistan , and if the U.S. still has it's own pilots flying this little bird if it is good for US PILOTS it is good enough for Nigerian pilots .Reputedly it has a range of 3,000 miles which gives it extensive loiter time at a time we don't have a plane that can do that and will be the first dedicated aircraft in the NAF 'S Inventory dedicated to Coin and Asymmetric warfare the NAF most definitely need to get this Aircraft.
so you want to use a turboprop for thirty years. When people have already started initiating and sponsoring advanced future fighter programs. Dude. One SU25 gets downed and that makes the Tucano a better plane? OK. Face an F18 with a Tucano and let's see what becomes of the pilot and his plane. Cus the SU25 was shot down by one of those. The US that has this plane also operate the A10 warthog and it remained their preferred platform for close air support. Buying the Tucano may be a good idea but buying twelve of it at that price even if they are going to mount it with a telescope is ridiculous.

You use 6 years to order for a plane today then when you need armament or spare parts for it you will use another 6 years to wait. Who is deceiving who? Those saying we can easily get parts from Brazil should sit down and be deceiving themselves. If US is not going to sell you parts then nobody else will have the guts to do that. No nation will risk the frown of a big power because they want to supply worthless scrap iron to one African country. If US decide to stop selling parts to us, even North Korea may not want to sell us those parts. What do they have to gain? International relations goes beyond buying and selling.

What am I seeing up? Why will you put up a Tucano with a f18? What are you expecting?

Even our own F-7 will shoot down a Tucano. The Tucano is for COIN. After insurgency, this aircraft can also be used for border patrol and maritime patrol due to its onboard ISR platforms.

IMO, it's still a great aircrafts but the price we're getting it for is high by which Nemesis4u already explained why.

I also feel 4th generations fighters from uncle Vladimir Putin would have been 900% better. If we want an aircraft that performs ISR, why not go for flankers and equip them with PODs?

First point of correction.
1.You don't need 6 years to acquire any Aircraft on average if things are done G2-G2 it takes two years and even then during that period it can be delayed due to upgrades or a country as it may wont to do change its mind the Indian Russian deal with regards to the SU 30 is a classic example.
The A29 Tuscano deal as has been explained repeatedly involves more than procuring 12 Birds. It involves training, it involves Precision guided Bombs and Missiles, it involves unguided Bombs. It also involves infrastructure which means not just buildings but almost certainly some form of simulators of which Nigeria has none.
Are the planes expensive yes they are.
Are the planes worth it yes they are.
No one has tried to compare the SU25 to the A-29
My stance is the A29 long term is the better plane.
When Nigeria in 1975 bought it's fleet of C-130s
It was considered as being expensive.Today some are still being flown all over the World.
This will be the story of the A-29.

Oga don't write point of correction. You are writing your opinion not correcting anybody. Except you are one of the decision makers that know everything about the deal, the deep and the lows or Air Force Spokes Person then you have no justifiable intellectual bearing on this matter to be correcting anybody. Just write your opinion and leave am like that.

Secondly.
the conditions under which these planes are coming are too humbling, too expensive and they are too over rated. The Tucano is the perfect COIN aircraft but outside COIN what benefits does it offer?

Why buy twelve attack planes that we can only operate within Nigeria apart from insurgency are we planning to go to war against ourselves?

12 turboprop attack planes That Won't see the Air in a contested airspace for 600mils. What the Tucano does now future developments in Air technology would see drones and unmanned planes doing them within the nearest future so what's with the 30years thing.

The C130 is no longer the ultimate cargo plane but it fulfils it role well and nobody doubts that. It's now obvious there was no plan to phase it out when it was being procured.

But why buy a plane that have been in use for seventy years now and say you want to operate it for thirty years to come. Dude when you talk you think oh. Do you want your kids future to be protected by super tucanoes? You want your kids to live in a country whose national security is guaranteed by turboprops. When nations of the world are already partnering for future fighter programs you are telling me you want to operate Tucanoes for years. Even the SU-25 and the fair child republics A10 warthog will soon be replaced by better systems and drones.

Just watch. Even those many story about the aircraft been expensive cus of PGMs , training consoles and maintenance will soon change we will soon be faced with some frightening but unavoidable truths about this deal.

Boko Haram that you chased out of Sambisa with Alpha jets now you want to buy PGM' s and tucano to do what? When you needed it we nor see. Now it's time to re-build the military into a standard conventional Armed Forces after all the tweaking to our doctrine that came with us fighting a non conventional force, you say you want to buy 12 turboprops to chase terrorists which terrorists?

You want border patrol platform buy drones. Those saying it would be used for border patrol where are you getting your info from. Did the airforce specify it would use it in that role?

We ve tried to buy the Tucanoes for almost 6 years unsuccessfully what that means is there have been a gap all this time that needs to be filled. At this point in our war against terror even a C130(A) would be a threat to the disorganised and disoriented terrorists but it's now that we are buying an expensive plane meant for "COIN alone "

A plane that you won't even contemplate calling up if there is a convoy of terrorist moving with some serious anti Aircraft Guns. If a ZSU can bring down a russian SU25 then the obvious can be the truth about our expensive "sophisticated " turboprop trainers when they go against anti aircraft guns. With those birds in the sky the terrorist confidence of survival will be improved. They now have the confidence that the bird in the sky can be brought down, it is no longer a mystic iron clad angel of death. It's just a super tucano that we can shoot down if we are lucky.

Calm daaaawn! Oga, calm down!

Ok... Ok... You've made your point, and we can see with it that you know names of some combat aircrafts. Well-done...

But still calm down.

Your argument is faulty because you outrightly threw out reasonable explanation made to you by the poster above us. Read him again and listen, he isn't far from reality.

Who go sell you AC130? Why una just like to dey drop big big names anyhow? Oya, show us which country US don ever sell AC130 give...

On Super Tucano, you obviously know so little of the tactical usefulness of the aircraft, otherwise you won't mention BH attacking it with AAs. It will roast the AA convoy from BVR. Find out again what it's targetting pod and smart bombs are for.

Who also told you it will be irrelevant in another 20-30 years? Are you aware that it's being touted as likeliest aircraft to replace the Warthogs in USAF? Bro, get your info right.

I, for one, thinks it's good thin to get them. Then, we should get the YAKs to replace our Alphas, and mix of single (light) engine interceptors and double engine (heavy) multi role jets from Russia. That mix should be good for next 30 yrs, while we move on to heavy and light lift capability replacement program me.

Oga, I know we don't have to all agree, but the Super Tucano is a good aircraft even though people have raised concerns about the cost of everything. Even in the West, millions are spent on infrastructure/equipment when a new p!at form is introduced.

Ghana, Mali, Angola etc know the value hence they have gone for the Tucano as well, which is a different aircraft and provides a light, cost effective aircraft for COIN and other operations.

The DSCA said that the proposed sale “will support Nigerian military operations against terrorist organizations Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa, and Nigerian efforts to counter illicit trafficking in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea. The Super Tucano is a sustainable platform for counterterrorism, counter-insurgency, border surveillance and illicit trade interdiction operations. Nigeria is an important partner in the U.S. national security goal to defeat ISIS, including its branches in Africa, and this sale is part of the U.S. commitment to help Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin countries in that fight.”

https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/defense/2017-08-09/sale-embraer-super-tucanos-nigeria-likely

Even the Americans are looking at a cheaper way to carry out this sort of warfare and the Tucano is on their list for a light attack aircraft.

https://theaviationist.com/2017/08/16/its-not-a-fly-off-competition-u-s-air-force-tests-process-and-planes-at-light-attack-demo/

This does not in anyway detract from the need for a multi-role aircraft like the JF-17, MIG 29/35 etc

PRESIDENT BUHARI JOINS SERVICE CHIEFS TO CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY ANNIVERSARY WITH FRONTLINE PERSONNEL

The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, joined the Service Chiefs in celebrating the 57th Independence Day Anniversary with frontline troops in Northeastern Nigeria. The President’s aircraft touched down at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) 105 Composite Group, where he was received by the Borno State Governor, other top government officials and the Service Chiefs, including the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. Immediately after the brief reception at the NAF Base, President Buhari was airlifted with a NAF Agusta 109 Light Utility Helicopter to the venue of the celebrations in Maimalari Barracks.

While addressing the frontline personnel, the President expressed the nation’s gratitude for the sacrifices being made by members of the Armed Forces. He added that without their efforts, the relative peace being enjoyed by Nigerians would not have been possible. He therefore commended them and promised that the nation would not spare expenses in ensuring the welfare of military personnel as well as in further enhancing their capacity. He then took the time to personally interact with some of the personnel, especially those who had been wounded in action. The NAF added colour to the occasion with aerial displays by its aircraft, which are involved in the ongoing counterterrorism operations. The NAF aircraft that participated in the aerial display included 2 x F-7Ni, 4 x Alpha Jet and 2 x L-49ZA. The following NAF helicopters also took part in the display: 2 x Agusta 109 LUH as well as one each of the Mi-35M, Mi-17 and the EC-135.

The visit of President Buhari went a long way in boosting the morale of the frontline personnel, who were obviously excited at seeing their C-in-C.
