Spain's Catalonia and Nigeria's Biafra seem to share common destiny. Just by east of Nigeria, Cameroon's Ambazonia (English speaking)in the southern part is also fighting to separate from the French speaking part of norther Cameroon. The state of California in the United States of America has been toying with the idea of an independent nation for awhile.

There are several nations seeking to break away from parent nations today.
Why do nations fear breakups and hold the other party down in an unholy and dissatisfied union. Russia, UK etc are facing similar problem.
Why can't UN set the rules and requirements for nations seeking independent to meet and why does it finds it difficult to intervene despite prolong agitation from separatists until so much blood is spilled.
Just musing about current world situation as more nations seek to split

I was just discussing this with my wife last night. She was reporting the scenes of the Spain and Catalonia on CNN to me.

I am also at a loss why countries would lock down tribes or regions who are willing to secede forcing them to go through the bloody route to the actualization of their dreams.

Would you easily allow your child go if he told you he was tired of you being his mother?

Have you been in a condition of losing your life line before(I mean source of income),then you will understand. Most of the region trying to break away are the life line of the country. The funny part of it is that this regions are normally shortchanged and those shortchanging them are backed by world powers to steal their resources. The region that have nothing will sell their resources at give away to western powers and eat from crumps that fall from the table of the world powers.

Is it the instinct to dominate and rule over?

Thats what is expected of a child. To grow and be his own man. There can never be unity in a forced union.

Eastern Nigeria is the life line of Nigeria.
There is nothing like South East in Nigeria Constitution.
What we have in Nigeria is Eastern Nigeria,Northern Nigeria, Western Nigeria and Mid-Western Nigeria.
Geopolitical is of recent during Obj tenure and is not in Constitution.

Biafra own case is special cos biblically if u remember the tower of babel the people wanted to see God so he scattered them with different languages. So is biafra a Rivers man ain't igbo, neither is an akwa ibom man or Calabar man etc.. Even within d igbo speaking tribes there is also a language barrier.. That's just a point even if we want to separate we wouldnt even be able to live on our own..

Sometimes it might not be about resources but deeper things like religion and tribalism especially in Africa.

This marriage of incovinences cannot hold up together forever. The less productive regions will be forced to up their game.

Biafra has 6 letters. Nigeria has 7 letters. Nigerian civil war was 1967. Buhari has 6 letters and Ojukwu also has 6 letters. Obama has 6 letters. Nigeria has 36 states. There are 3 markets around my area. We have 2 eateries close to my house. By the time you realize that this post has no meaning, it's already too late for you, and you can't do me anything.I just wasted your time, I'm not even at home so you won't even see me to beat

Yea, if it is Religion and tribalism it is very easy to divide like the case of India and pakistan, singapore and Malaysia.
This countries seeking for Independence are mainly due to resources, the Government feel that if they allow them to go then they will die of hunger. eg
Ambazonia in Cameroon
Kurds in Iraq
Biafra in Nigeria
Casmire in India
Western Sahara in Morocco

You seem to make sense here. However, the fear is that if one section is allowed to go others will follow and the entire union will dissolve.

Nigeria has the opportunity to be a super power and Africa's numero uno advocate If she remains one, united and indivisible entity.

Agitations for a sovereign state of whatever is based on bad politics, selfishness, myopia and wishful thinking.

We have some reckoning in the world today Because of our sheer number.

What is left is for us to get rid of these current crop of "leaders" and get in place people who are selfless and know How to manage resources both human and natural to lift everyone out of this doldrums.

Most new nations these days are borne out of idealistic and wishful thinking and desires.

"Biafrans" think their path to glory is being blocked by other tribes in Nigeria. Yet for the past 17 or so years of democracy, their leaders have shown the same level of greed, rapaciousness and insensitivity that is so common among Nigerian politicians.

We shouldn't be fighting ourselves, we should band together and form a formidable force to chase away all these so-called leaders who have mortgaged the future of the unborn children of the common man.

Biafra won't be any better than Nigeria. It probably will be worse. Even within the major ethnic groups in Nigeria, there's still discrimination.

Good submission. But the question is, where do we get the angels to run the government? In the absence of this, the situation remains and the agitations continue. Living life in circle!

You spoke well, but unfortunately South East is blocked from receiving anything good in Nigeria by the FG.
South Africa have a rail line that covers the whole country, 6 Standard International Airport that you can use to land in any part of south Africa, 7 standard sea port that cut across the country.
What is preventing FG to have one standard international Airport in the east, one sea port, railway in the east and you want them to be happy in Nigeria.
FG will build rail line in Nigeria and cut off the SE

Eastern Nigeria is not the lifeline of Nigeria. No offence meant. Right now, the mid western, middle belt and western Nigeria are what is holding up Nigeria.

Don't get me wrong. Every part of Nigeria of Nigeria is important and needed, But holding up Nigeria right now are the parts that provide the major income earning (mid west today known as south south), agriculture (middle belt today known as north central) industry (west today known as southwest).

Other parts contribute their own quota too and the eastern part No less (trade). But unfortunately that trade is not trade with other countries But importing goods into Nigeria which is what Nigeria needs less of right now.

I sometime wonder why it was difficult for GEJ to do these things even though he attempted in the case of Enugu Intrnational Airport. Is the airport still operating as an international airport?

In Spain's case, Catalonia is too important to Spain. It produces about 1/5 of their revenue as well as being one of the most productive regions in the entire Europe.
I think it's an ego/greed case in Nigeria. The leaders are aware that their private earnings would take a great hit should they consider the restructure/Biafra option.

The former old Eastern Nigeria is made up of the following states now,
Enugu
Anambra
IMO
Abia
Ebonyi
Rivers
Cross River
Bayelsa
Akwa Ibom
So compare and contrast and know if the Eastern Nigeria is not the life line of Nigeria.
The Mid- Western Nigeria is not SS but Bendel which is now Edo and Delta state.
