Washington (CNN) – With the stroke of a pen Thursday, President Barack Obama gave himself and his wife Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives.

The new law, which passed the House and Senate in December, designates that all former U.S. presidents who served after January 1, 1997, along with their spouses, receive protection from the Secret Service for their entire lifetimes – meaning former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura are also covered. The law also stipulates that children of presidents receive protection until the age of 16.

United States is the richest country on earth and they can afford it. The law has not been consistent in U.S, Clinton's protection was limited to 10 years when he left office.
While Emoney and Patience are being followed around who is protecting your own family?

It has not always been like that and United States can afford it, Nigeria cannot.

It's cheap Sir.

Paying police n army for a day is usually around 3k - 4k per day.

normal people can even afford it.

I don't think so sir. Ordinary Nigerians are still not protected from crimes. Many crimes are never investigated let alone solved and you waste resources by following a few people around?

it's ur problem to fight for that. That Nigeria's has been destroyed by its leaders (hausa n yoruba) over the years does not mean I can't rent police to guard me n it doesn't also mean that a former president shouldn't get security... Meet up with ur senators n reps members to sort it out.

I absolutely think a former president should get security because they are valuable to our own security but not their wives, absolutely not.

Would you also be able to rent your own fire fighters if God forbid your property is on fire?

Nigerians don't care about their own home.

They only pray for life to be better for their oppressors.

U can't secure a past president n leave his wife/wives n children vulnerable.

I already paid for omo, klin and water to do the fire service by myself

Ur talking as if u live in a nation where everything works.

Why is she still being followed around by soldiers and the Police?
The answer seems to be by the virtue of being a public figure.

And so freaking what? She was never elected by anyone. She doesn't have the right to be followed around by soldiers any more than any market woman in Okrika.
Oga stop being an e-warrior, go to buhari, tell him to call off d security following her, simple!

The police should not be for rent no matter how rich you are.
If the first lady is attending an event where security or crowd control is an issue that is understandable but to followed around for life to protect her is beyond foolish. Her life is not more important than any other woman in Okrika.
Oga, even wealthy people that are not politicians have hired policemen as security escorts. Stop hating on the woman! Go and make money!

I am probably far richer than you are but I think it is wrong to commercialize the police. Police should not be for rent. If there's a need for private security the government should allow for that but the police should never be for rent.

I'm not saying it is right or wrong. It is being done as a normal thing. Normal doesn't mean right or wrong.
