NNPC Scandal: Group Managing Director, Baru, breaks silence

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Maikanti Baru, has finally responded to allegations of corruption and violation of contract laws raised by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibeh Kachikwu.

In a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari, leaked last week to the media, Mr. Kachikwu detailed several alleged misdeeds of Mr. Baru, including the unilateral award of hefty oil and gas contracts totaling about N9 trillion.

He also accused Mr. Baru of insubordination.

Mr. Kachikwu met with President Buhari on Friday, but despite the weight of the allegations, no government official reacted publicly until now.

Kachikwu said Baru was awarding contracts anyhow, and he didn't know anything about those contracts.

Baru has replied Kachikwu that most of the commercial transactions you call 'contracts' which you think needed to be routed through you, were actually not contracts. So they are actually none of your business. Secondly, approval for the ones that were contracts whose sum were above a certain level, could come (and even came, in some cases) from the FEC or directly from the Petroleum Minister/President. Thirdly, you Kachikwu were well aware of those large sum contracts even at FEC level, since you are a member of FEC, so how can you turn round to say you now know nothing about them?

We expected this official reply, which isn't far from the top insider's report on same issue, one thing which could've been prevented from the onset was making these two work together.
This was a colossal mistake, when Kachikwu was GMD he deliberately sidelined Baru, posting him as a high level NNPC personnel to redundant positions, and even recommending his early retirement alongside some other top NNPC officials, so when Baru made it to find it is only logical to take him to a totally different ministry to head, because if there's anything one has learnt from civil servants is "never mess with the politics of civil service".
Because Baru will definitely use every rule in the book to see that he sidelines Baru, all this at the expense of 180 million ppl.

Why is Baru conspicuously silence on the appointments and postings in NNPC without board approval?

Why did PMB constituted the NNPC board and made Kachikwu the board chairman with the mandate of reviewing NNPC contracts above certain threshold.

Who prevented Kachikwu from seeing the president?

What is the relevant of Kachikwu in NNPC ?............

Did the president received Kachikwu's memo and what action did he took about it?

I am more worried about the Leadership skills and style of the presidency!

You were present when he was doing the stealing, or you helped him launder part of the stolen proceeds? Talk o, so we can blow whistle on your head as it appears you are his accomplice.

Now that we've heard/read from both parties, this should be investigated by an independent body/party, vis-a-viz Kachikwu's allegations, and if established that Kachikwu cried wolf when there was none, he should be summarily dismissed for undermining the Government he's a part of, especially for the baseless allegations, and for leaking the letter to the press (which I believe he did!).

He (Kachikwu), of all people, should know that a Minister of State is a "mere spare tyre", only as effective/influential as his principal (the substantive Minister) wants him to be. Buhari has successfully undermined him, by attending to the GMD's requests and granting approvals without his (Minister of State's) knowledge.

Sad, but that's how the cookie crumbles.

Kachikwu should honorably resign (if he's got any honor in him) or should be fired without further delay. His position has become untenable!

Kachikwu truly used his own hand to fall his own hand.

Kachikwu despite being the previous GMD of NNPC, did not fully understand how the NNPC functions as regards to contracts and procurement.

Kachikwu should just apologize for brewing a storm in a tea cup, and everyone moves on.

However, Buhari needs to fully hand over the ministry to Kachikwu, to stop all this unnecessary conflicts of authority.

in all he has mentioned, he has tried to make see how irrelevant the work of minister of state for petroleum, he has however alluded to the fact that, its the duty of the minister of state for petroleum to approve contracts. now my thoughts, if buhari has been out of the country for about 3 months and more, who has accented to those contracts. at least, if the minister of petroleum has been absent all these Numbers of days, the minister of state for petroleum should fits in and acts in that capacity. I hope buhari is not creating problem for himself. what is now the work of Minister of state for petroleum? If I were to be Dr. Kachukwu, I would honorably resign and leave both of them to continue with their transactions. Posterity will always judge!

People are missing the main point here: which is that Buhari is the progenitor of this crisis.
He appointed himself minister of petroleum when he is mentally intellectually and physically unsuited for the task; he chose tribe above competence when he removed Kachikwu and appointed Baru.
Now there are three players, three egos, three centers of power in a ministry meant to be run by one minister. How won't there be crises ?
