Super Eagles star reveals why he chose Nigeria over England

Alex Iwobi says he was impressed with how he was treated by the Nigerian football world which convinced him to play for the Super Eagles

Alex Iwobi reveals why he choose Nigeria over England (Reuters)

Iwobi represented England in youth competition (FA)
The 21-year-old, however, switched his allegiance to Nigeria snubbing last-minute pressure from England.
According to the Arsenal star, the way he was treated by the Nigerian football world influenced his decision to play for his country of birth.
Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, John Oguplay
Alex Iwobi is happy with how he has been well received in the national team (Twitter/John Ogu)
“Originally I’m from Nigeria. I always felt comfortable there. It was a hard decision because I’d played for England but I felt more at home there,” Iwobi told Daily Cannon.
“When I first went they treated me like royalty. For the U-23s, like a king. It’s a big thing there.

”As I was about to play my first match (for Nigeria) Roy Hodgson was in contact with Arsenal saying they’d like me to get involved with the U-21s but my mind was made up. It’s my decision.”

Iwobi has gone to made 10 caps for the Super Eagles and has become one of their most exciting players.
His only goal for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, came in their impressive 2-1 away win at Zambia in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

I'm coming I will get to the original source.. He has already been quoted as saying he would have "loved" to play for England. And I have shown you. But I will give you more.. so wait grin

yes I get you Sir. But V. Moses isn't Messi or Ronaldo.

Truly everyone knows how important he is to the team, but rohr coming out to say that he'll be your joker has gone to far. All what our opponents will be after is shutting him up or better still take him out of the equation. Don't forget Onazi in the last worldcup. The french spotted him as the smallest rudder turning the entire engine. They took him out and we collapsed.
every team knows Moses is our key player whether the coach says it or not, the example of Onazi you cited I'm sure nobody said it that he's our midfield engine room but the French knew it after studying our game(s)

Let me condense the crux of my position in a few words:
1-Whenever Nigeria reaches out to the foreign born players, the odds are stacked against Nigeria and in favour of the adopted country.

2. It's not easy to choose between one or the other. Interviews by Iwobi and Balogun bears this out and understandably so cos they've passed through that road unlike many who make it seem like it's an easy choice.

3- Personally I don't care about foreign born players. I only just try to understand their position. Ultimately the best is what the Eagles should get foreign born or not.

The teenager has elected to play for the Super Eagles
“Ordinarily I would have loved to play for England since I have played for all the under-aged teams up to the U-19, but Austin Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu have influenced my decision to play for Nigeria,” Iwobi revealed earlier this year.
“My dad too has told me a lot of things about the honour and pride that goes with playing for Nigeria.
“So I thought a lot about this and decided to play for Nigeria.”

Rohr Set To Hand Full Debut To Chelsea
Loanee Ola Aina Vs Algeria

https://www.allnigeriasoccer.com/football_pics/18796OlaAina.jpg

Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr has hinted that
he will hand a full debut to Chelsea defender
Ola Aina in November's World Cup qualifier
against Algeria, with uncertainty surrounding
the fitness of Sivasspor's Elderson Echiejile.

The Monaco loanee suffered an ankle injury
during the Super Eagles workout last
Tuesday, and aggravated the same injury in
the closing minutes of Nigeria's 1-0 win over
Zambia on October 7.

Speaking to reporters at the NFF secretariat
in Abuja, Rohr stated that Echiejile faces four
weeks on the sidelines, and might not be
considered for the game with the North
Africans.

''Already we know that Elderson Echiejile is
ruled out of the game because he is out for
about four weeks due to the injury he
sustained, '' Rohr said, according to
scorenigeria.com.ng.

Ola Aina made his competitive debut for the
Nigerian national team off the bench when he
replaced Echiejile in the 79th minute against
Zambia.

The 21-year-old's preferred position is right
back as he is right-footed.

This guys are real spinsters - they just put a spin on everything. The headline wasn't what Rohr said. But this is how they(the news outlet) came to their conclusion: Echiejile and Aina play the LB for Nigeria. Echiejile is injured, therefore Aina gets his full debut. Nothing wrong to draw deductions and make projections but they'd spin it like that what the coach said. And that's whack. No wonder Rohr says he doesn't read Nigerian news outlets and that's not good for us too. He needs to read them so that he'd know what we are thinking, heck he can even get insight on how to go about making success with the team. But with such blatant falsehoods, half truths and misinformation passing as news, I don't blame him.

Do you know what this means: perception is reality? Even in Nigeria here people are dealing with wrong perceptions, which they see as their reality, with stereotypes. You are now talking about somebody born in the UK who possibly has no connection with Nigeria other than ancestral ties. I tire for you.

How is that chance an half-chance??

There's no way ighalo would have scored that goal without trying to cut back.
I am gonna have to disagree with you. Those chances were half chances and sometimes thats all the chance you get in a high profile, high octane match. Frankly speaking, his decision making there left a lot to be desired. Cutting back was wrong. Check out the one time hit by Iwobi. Though there wasnt enough power behind it, it did the job. Imagine if the first thing he did was to trap the ball.

This is why I said Iheanacho should work on the use of his right. Balls wont always fall on a convenient spot for u to shoot and a timeous use of your right or left as the case may be may just be the game changer
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 5:25pm On Oct 11, 2017
To your points:
1. Yes, especially with players that have minimal or no connection with Nigeria. with those that have strong connections with Nigeria, it ONLY becomes a tough decision when the other country expresses interest as well.

2. Same as above, but both players cases are quite different from several other cases, because there were no interest from the other country at the time that they made up their mind. England made a last ditch effort for Iwobi after Iwobi had made up his mind. And I don't think Balogun was under Germany's consideration (I stand to be corrected)

3. For me they are Nigerians as well. They still have to be good enough to make the team. No sentiments. No "partiality".

True that. Modern Football calls for such dynamism now ooo. That's why this cliché that you never change a winning team is one which has to be re-examined cos I feel the team has to be set up in accordance with the type of opponent one has to face, the personnel at one's disposal. Rohr stuck to the cliché and it nearly cost us cos Zambia and Cameroun don't play same kind of football. Yet I am not mindful of the pitfalls of always changing things but again that's what modern Football thrives on.

Exactly!! Iwobi's Dad said Iwobi was a bit reluctant to come to Nigeria when he received call up from Nigeria but that he told the young man that they should travel to Nigeria to see for themselves cos of the negative things they had heard.

I am not keen about foreign born players but about the best for the Eagles, however I do understand in a little way that such decisions are not easy to make.

Goodjoe gave an analogy of a girl putting one guy on hold just to see if the one she has her eyes on would marry her. But that's a very imperfect analogy so long as he failed to factor in the fact that the young woman being courted by two guys-one she has no relationship with other than they are from the same ethnic group, the other guy though not from her ethnic group is one with whom she has a relationship, she grew up with him, he played with her, she's emotionally attached to him, he's taught her lots of things, made available for her good the resources he has, he's taken her out for several trainings and vacations. Meanwhile the other guy who is now just coming is one whom she's heard has craw-craw, is very disorganised, loves being crooked etc. The goodjoe would you have your daughter marry the journey just come guy while the other guy is still courting her?
I repeat, such decisions are not easy.
God bless you my brother... I will never blame Tammy moreover Tammy never rejected us...
One thing we have forgotten is that.. Tammy is part of U21 and U20 of England... Core member I must say whereas iwobi and Aina... Are just there with nobody calling them...
Tammy switch is kind dicey seriously and I don't see England losing him without a fight.. Just painful AmajuPinnick blew everything up cos of politics but I see him playing for us.. Vic Moses is involve now, iwobi and Aina is also involve too. And their parent is also part of it.. I was reading from Owngoal when iwobi father said they should come and see themselves . This will really have alot of influence of him...

We should stop abusing foreign born player... They have never felt Nigeria... If could remember first time of iwobi in Nigeria with pepper soup in saga.. grin Do you remember when everyone was shouting food poisoning...
We should give him a chance that's just it

And I believe most of us will do worse if we find ourself in Tammy position...

Sorry for bringing politics...

I was reading biography of Raymond dokpesi the owner of AIt and ray power...

He studied abroad.. First Class in both Bsc and Msc.. The then head of state general Obansojo spotted him after his Msc convocation... And ordered him to return to Nigeria with immediate effect.. I bet you Chief Raymond find it hard to return even though he had his primary and secondary school in Nigeria... The then head of state need to do alot of taking for him to return home with some position to handle before he later yielded...

Agbo has been in the team. Let's see what he can do.. A realistic expectation will be Rohr giving Ogu, Agu and Agbo playing opportunities in the absence of Mikel and Ndidi.
And if you check player coach Rohr do call.. They are player that can play two or three positions... Like agbo he can play in defence and midfield (DM)

Well if we succeed in sandwiching the Algeria tie between two friendlies as was reported we can do much of our experimenting with the friendlies instead. Then maintain the core of the team as well as cap the "cappable" foreign-breds with the dead-rubber match.
That is Rohr plan.. He didn't want to loss any qualifier..

Let me get to your point.. Let me help you.

I would have loved to = that was my intention but...
I love to = I still want to play for England

But analyzing that line ("I would have love to" ) alone, he is saying it is normal that one would love to progress up the ranks after playing for the junior teams..

Analyzing his later remarks, it shows he was convinced to go the other direction -- play for Nigeria..

What does that tell you?

Oga, Victor Moses's importance/role in that team is crystal clear for anyone who watches even one of our matches. Rohr is just saying the obvious.
I like Rohr's spirit. He knows we have to even improve to do well in Russia. I'm am totally confident in Rohr.
Rohr is not a small coach many may not believe in him.. But this is the man that have seen the good the bad and the worst of his coaching career... He's a blessing to us..
