Football Stop begging Nigeria-born foreign players to play for Eagles, Onigbinde tells NFF By Alex Monye 16 October 2017 | 4:10 am Former Super Eagles coach, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has called on the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) to stop pleading with Nigerian -born foreign players across Europe to play for the national team , saying such trend could hamper the nation’s football development efforts. Onigbinde described as a big shame the recent trend in which a nation that has produced former winners of the prestigious African footballer of the Year award like late Rashidi Yekini, Victor Ikpeba, Emmanuel Amuneke and Kanu Nwankwo are wooing foreign players of Nigerian descent to play for the Super Eagles . The FIFA technical adviser advised the NFF to create a programme to discover talents from the Nigerian league system and the grassroots, saying if a technical team was constituted to watch every league game in all centers every season, national team coaches would have a pool of talents to choose from while preparing their teams . The former member of the NFF technical committee advised Nigerian coaches to update their knowledge of the game to meet the current standard of their counterparts in Europe, adding that if Nigeria did not produce good coaches, there is no way they would churn out quality talents. “I find it embarrassing that Nigeria is begging Europe-born players to play for the Super Eagles. If in the past the country produced quality players, I see no reason it cannot happen now. The problem is that the NFF doesn’ t have a developmental plan. This is why they focus on getting other players. “If a technical team were sent to all league venues to watch players and pick the best and send it to a particular data base in their Abuja office , such players will be monitored from time to time and Nigerian coaches at the end of the day would have a pool of players to pick from . “Anybody that says Nigeria no longer has talented footballers is not being fair. There are quality players everywhere in the league, under the bridge and the grassroots, but there is no adequate mechanism put in place to search for them. “It took me some minutes to pick Vincent Enyeama as my number one goalkeeper for Super Eagles after watching him in a game. I had never met him before I made that decision,” he said. Onigbinde also advised the NFF to ensure the Super Eagles prepare well to make an appreciable impact in Russia. https://m.guardian.ng/sport/stop-begging-nigeria-born-foreign-players-to-play-for-eagles-onigbinde-tells-nff/

Humility017:Emmm High Chief, we are not begging, we are only wooing. Several countries have done same in the past. Leonel Messi for eg would have been playing for Spain today if Argentina had not made that move. Mind you, we only go for players that will add value in departments that we need fortification and not every di-ck and Harry. We recently acquired Ola Aina and we will make attempts at Tammy Abraham. If we don't get him we move on. But let it be known that we made the attempts so future generations will not place curses on the NFF for missing out on him in case he turns out like another Dele Alli. I don't go for every foreign born, only those that we need. We need Abraham for Russia. |

Humility017:The man said it all, our developmental plans have been d issue, truly talents abound in Nigeria but who to discover them. The secondary schools game is dead,Principal cup gone,YSFON collapsed, NIPOGA game no more attention, NUGA game d same thing, these are d games that produced players for our various national teams. How can we revive all these is left for various sporting federation to put their house in order and put a great mechanism in place to salvage d situations coz it has reached a stage we just have to do something about it. Apart from football or may be basketball that are still trying to put smiles on d faces of sports fans, other games brings nothing,d worst of it all is d athletics. This is a game that has produced great athletes like Dele Udoh,Ahmed Adio,Chidi Imoh,Innocent Egbunike,Mary Onyali,Falilat Ogunkoya,Olapade Adenikan,Ezenwa brothers,Chioma Ajunwa but can we say now, mediocre running for Nigeria. Football still a force to reckon with coz d talents are abound not that we get it right through fundamentals plans and we should thanks d individuals football academies that spring up to fill d gap created by non functional football federation grassroots plans. Onigbinde said do we need to beg any foreign born players to play for us?definitely NO but in d absence of good foundation what do we do?we just need to beg.I know d man was referring to Tammy Abraham situation. The man said just few minutes he was able to discover Enyeama.I remember i had a lengthy discussion with my former university coach in person of Amusa Adisa who happened to be goalkeeper trainer to 2002 WC. I asked him what gave u that confidence to pick Enyeama ahead of Shorunmu against England, he said when u see a talent irrespective of experience u don't care,he said prior to WC Enyeama had only one cap in a grade b friendly. I asked why can't we discovered more Enyeama and he said most of our grassroots games are no longer functioning and it w take a miracle to see a special players for national team and our coaches are not helping d situation. Honestly there are a lot of talents wasting away coz nobody to see them, those saddle with d responsibilities are not doing enough. Thanks for football academies that came to d rescued. i remember how i try to convince Ex polish international Emma Olisadebe after our VC cup in d university,I went to him and told him point blank that did u know u are better than KANU Nwankwo,he looked at me and said u are not serious, again during Governor Cup that my school participated, during this match we beat a very solid team 6-1 and he scored 5 goals. The fans in d stadium were surprised to see such talent in d university. The two local league club try to sign him but refused. Luckily for him he made world university game team and put shooting star Edith Agoye permanently on d bench. It was Fanny Amu that later told him point blank that u are wasting your talent. The rest is history d same Olisadebe later represent Poland in d WC after Nigeria refused to call him.He single handedly took Poland to 2002 WC,had a goal against USA. To buttress Onigbinde points, talents abound in sec sch, polytechnics, universities and there is need we revive our youth games like Principal cup,YSFON,focus on NIPOGA,NUGA,these are d only way we can save our sports. I remember my secondary school represented Nigeria in Sweden in handball game and same thing we represent Nigeria in Canada, this was in 80s,so why are we finding it difficult to do d same thing now. |

BUSINESS PART Ahmed Musa makes another foxy business decision 13 Oct,2017 Colin Udoh, KweséESPN Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa may be finding it tough to make a headway with the Foxes, but the Nigeria striker appears to be making great strides elsewhere: in business. Straight after leaving camp this week, in the wake of the Super Eagles sealing qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Musa headed off to his home in the northern Nigerian city of Kano. It was not a social visit, at least not completely. Musa was in Kano to formally open his petrol station, one of a growing number of business concerns the 24-year-old is gradually building as he looks to invest wisely for his future. This follows the opening of a N500m ($1.4 million) sports complex and leisure centre, also in Kano, earlier this year. He also opened a mini shopping mall a few years ago. These are ventures which, in a cash-based economy like Nigeria, are guaranteed milking cows, especially the petrol station. An oil-producing country, Nigeria's downstream sector is a particularly lucrative business enterprise, and if well-managed and scaled, could well see the player earn more than he does playing football. Musa told KweséESPN he was looking to the future: "It is important to think about life after football. "We will not play forever, and the best time to start thinking about that and doing something about it is when you are still playing." There is an almost identical pattern to the career trajectory of the majority of top African football players. It usually starts from being poor, to struggling beginners, then the big European break, earning unbelievable sums of money and living the high life. Retirement eventually follows, and with it comes a drop in earnings, and lifestyle. In Nigeria, where the domestic league is still in the early stages of emerging from the poor organisation of yesteryear, opportunities for post-career development are extremely limited within football circles. These opportunities are mostly in coaching, like for 1994 World Cup stars Augustine Eguavoen, Samson Siasia, and Emmanuel Amuneke, or in player management like former Lazio forward Stephen Makinwa. These opportunities are not just limited, but usually poorly remunerated, particularly at club level. And, outside of the senior men's team, the national team jobs are almost as poorly-remunerated as the clubs, with regular and extended delays in payments. Unlike in Europe, and even South Africa, opportunities for media work are also rare, to the point of being practically non-existent. Many players are simply left scraping the bottom of their former high-paying barrels to survive. More recent retirees, and even current players, have chosen to invest in real estate, which provides significant but seasonal income, as rent in Nigeria is usually paid annually rather than monthly. Musa has chosen to break the mould, and delve into an area where no other Nigerian footballer has dared to go. It is a remarkably bold move for the forward, and one which sets him apart from his peers. A Sports Centre, shopping mall, and now petrol station. Is there anything else Ahmed Musa plans to invest in? "Wait and see," is all he will offer, suggesting that there is indeed more to come. http://kwese.espn.com/football/nigeria/story/3227843/ahmed-musa-makes-another-foxy-business-decision |

Kog45:Goldstar post Oga Kog45.. Truth is that we cannot talk about poverty alleviation without thinking about having a vibrant sports industry. The talents are down there in the grassroot, but we haven't seem to figure out how to bell the cat. I have in the past described our achievements in sports over the years as mere accidental discharge. We have no laid structure or even a clue on how to tap into the rich reserves of talent we have as a nation. I find it disturbing up till date we have no high performance training facility in the country. There is a high altitude training facility in Jos which was commissioned in the military era, today what we have is an abandoned project. This training facility, would have put us on par with the Ethiopians and Kenyans in the long distance races. Sometimes I wonder why we don't have thinkers within the corridors of power. I watched on TV the other day some British Olympic swimmers going to Japan to acclimatise and train with the Tokyo 2022 Olympics in view. These are the same people we are supposed to compete with at the same Olympics and we expect to get a medal. How is that even possible? Remember Okocha's gateway to success came through the Greater tommorow programme when they travelled to the US at a time he was still in junior high school. Do we have these sort of programmes anymore? Even the Shell Cup which threatened to snowball into something big have gone belly up. I feel getting a foreign minister of sports will be the way to go. I'm looking at someone like John Mastroudes. He can do a job for us in my opinion. |

Humility017:He was right to kick against the employment of Rohr. At the time employing Rohr was a huge gamble. His CV doesn't exactly inspire much confidence. He hasn't been particularly successful in any of his previous jobs in Africa and even Europe. We are talking about a guy who was unceremoniously sacked by Club Africain of Tunisia.. “We’ve gotten to the point where we can’t even have one more training session with him, especially from the standpoint of player discipline and the style of play,” club spokesman Taoufik Gahbiche said in a radio interview. The man is actually very correct when he talked about discovering home grown talents. Let me ask you, these foreign born talents who have ditched us in the past, who among those players have really developed into world class players apart from Alaba and maybe Dele Alli. Can you drop some names you can say we have really missed in the Super Eagles apart from those 2. |

elyte89:Thank u my man,i was surprised too d way we keep on hammering players invitations as if d team that qualified us are bunch of mediocre. We need to respect d team or else we loose it.I was surprised hearing from this thread yesterday that Westerhoff invited over hundred players for opened screening prior to US 94.I want to say this is not true coz am hearing of such for d first time. I followed d team preparation with keen interest being our first WC appearance.I followed Segun Odegbami program coz he w give u first hand information with video clips on what was going on in d camp and training in papendal Holland and Portugal. After Tunisia 94 we already have a team except one or two areas, and only Chidi Nwanu and Mike Emenalo gatecrashed into d squad and replaced dropped Isaac Semitoje and Nduka Ugbade. So d 100 hundred in camp stiil baffling me,honestly am stand to be corrected. Alloy Agu said something about Enyeama recalling, though i want Enyeama to be back but whether we like Agu or not there is need for us to critically analyse why he said calling Enyeama back we break d existing bond in d team. I don't see reason we should always attack without analysing on what he said, truly d bond in this team is great and it make d team thick on and off d field. This bond must not break coz of individual. Zambia lost a very strong team to a plane crash except Kalusha Bwalya.Zambia raised another team and reached Afcon final in 1994,as u said this team is ready to go unless we see better players in few areas we are lacking. Mikel Agu as your reference, some we not agree with u even Rohr confirmed it that he had a difficult game but some w still come here to tell us what is not as we are just watching d game. Am very sure 14 to 15 players are sure banker for this WC except injury occurs which we don't pray for and new players comes in and must even be better than d fringe ones.let names keep on flying Rohr is d coach and I know he w do needful. |

Kog45:precisely correct, all those secondary school football tourneys are dead and buried. It is only in Nigeria that such happens, in 2008 I think, we were preparing for the NNPC games, the coach said that they check weight, 60kg maximum(so a kid who is muscular is already out of the games), I was 65 at first but after running up to 5km every morning for two weeks, even Mark Henry would slim down. Then the actual football came, private school, we were all very tall with long limbs, as at then I was 1.85 but was it my fault that my gene is a tall one? But they came and told us that the height limit was 1.67(?) or something even more ridiculous than that. Back then football was still not a big thing and the only means of development was through such secondary school football tourneys, but in a situation where you remove a kid just because he/she is too tall or too muscular does not make sense and academies in Nigeria aint helping out, they only develop the football skills of the kids but education wise they do nothing and they don't even give you enough time to read your books or attend classes elsewhere. Grassroot football is dead, it died a long time ago. Our academies are not well equiped to train future stars, some of them are hardly educated, how will they understand coaches and highly technical terms? |
