It's good to aim for the mountain top but one must appreciate and never disregard how far up one has climbed.

This is what separates the likes of messi, ronaldinho (gaucho) and jayjay from people like Cristiano Ronaldo. The former love honours, titles and accolades but prefer to have fun on the pitch probably because, at day's end, it's just a game. The latter just want to win at all cost: they will fight and insult teammates, opponents and officials to achieve their objectives.

Amuneke, Yekini and Amokachi probably scored more goals for club and country. Amuneke even played for Barcelona but they arent half as respected. It's not the size of the club or the titles but your contribution and respect.

As a skillful player I can relate to okocha,the game isn't all about Winning,if you're not having fun playing,winning will not mean anything to you.....okocha loved playing and made sure he enjoyed his time on the pitch and he also proved to be a match winner when needed

Messi has been in Barca's scope since he was 5 years old and was engaged in various Barca sponsored programes in Rosario while he was officially signed to Newell's Old Boys.

The point is that Messi and his likes have the advantage of organised football training in tactics, technics, basic rules, physiotherapy, psychology etc from such early age and exposure to major youth competitions across the globe while many Africans like JJ Okocha only get to stumble into professional football in their late teens with nothing but raw talent and passion to excel.

JJ is the real deal and in my lifetime, I have never seen a footballer so better than him outside of the mercurial band of the Peles, Maradonas, the two Ronaldos, Messis et al.

Okocha had decided to stay on and play for Bolton in the semi-final instead of reporting to the Eagles' camp immediately. Christian Chukwu gave him permission to delay his arrival in camp. He scored these two delightful goals in the match.

Some Nigerians criticised him for that and the commentator in the Nigeria vs Cameroon match was saying that some Nigerians would question his commitment if he didn't score, but he scored a freekick goal in that match too.

Okocha's amazing dribble and goal.

Okocha performed this trick on at least two occassions, but I only have a video of one of them. So I'll narrate the second occassion and post a video of the first.

There was a tv show called "Football Made In Germany". It was produced by Transtel and it was shown on the NTA in the 1980s and '90s. The commentator was Toby Charles.

This particular episode featured a match between Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Jay Jay Okocha dribbled virtually the entire Bayern defence, beat the keeper (Oliver Kahn), but missed the goal by just an inch. It was incredible. French star and Bayern striker Jean Pierre Papin went to Okocha and pulled his shirt over his head (jokingly) as if he was saying, "How can you dribble the entire defence so beautifully and fail to score?"


The first time he did it was in a match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Karlsruhe. Oliver Kahn was also the opposing keeper on that day (this was before he moved to Bayern).

Okocha dribbled the Karlsruhe defence and beat Kahn multiple times, yet he refused to shoot but chose to dribble them again. Eventually, after doing this a couple of times, he chose to score. It was an amazing goal.

The problem was that he didn't take the game seriously at the formative stage of his career. Even Westerhoff used to bench him until he got matured, he was more interested in entertaining fans than getting results.
It took PSG buying him after France 98 as Africa's most expensive player for $17m before Okocha became serious.
