Not true, its the same old thing as Veitnam m8.

Just as the military gets things stabilized and has the upper-hand, the politicians see the opportunity to withdraw.

Trump's re-commitment to Afghan and the deployment of additional troops was a smart move - just give it time. Since the announcement - and the implication that the US is prepared to stay another 4-8 years - moderate voices in the Taliban have started saying they may be prepared to approach the negotiation table.

Obama fvcked it all up when he announced a withdrawal timetable - Taliban knew all they had to do was survive until withdrawal was complete. I have no idea why people love that guy, he is surely one of the most inept statesmen the US has ever produced... I guess its because he made pretty speeches.

Allmost the exact same things happened in Veitnam and Iraq.

Iraq was relatively stable when the USA pulled out Syria and the Arab spring caused major issues but that was not some thing one could for see

16 years of combat operations undecided common mate.
The war in Afghanistan is a total failure, the Taliban still controls territory and the US and it’s allies are desperately trying to withdraw with any dignity they have left.

At least the UK is training young competent officers at a wonderful institute in Kabul.

Talbian is being whittled down the only reason they still a issue is that they can hide in the Pakistan tribal region out of reach by all but drone strikes.

Remove the talbian presence and it just little slither of land. All so note this was due to a ISAF down size but with the new surg thing will turn around again

The entire NATO got nailed and still getting nailed by the Taliban grin I think we can all agree that country is invasion proof, It’s a geographical thing.

NATO did well in Afghanistan until the US decided to invade Iraq and gave back a huge part of Afghanistan to the incompetent Afghan troops who handed it back to the Taliban (and Islamist buddies)... Talk about the Taliban, I'm looking at 2 guys right now in downtown that you'll bet just landed from Afghanistan with the head gear and all. Hope they have no exploding issues grin

How is it in any way a total failure? A democratically elected government still rules the majority of the country, huge advances in human rights have been achieved, an increasingly competant and lethal Afghani army was pulled together from nothing

You can only claim "success" or "failure" once the war is over - the war is ongoing.

And, you should get your facts straight - Trump just ordered an additional 3000 troops to Afghanistan

first of all.... stop making this about your g-man Trump, we are talking about the bad decisions that have been made over those 16 long years that led up to today.

If the war was going so well and according to plan (wars never go according to plan) then NATO wouldn't suddenly realise they are better off allowing the Afghans fix their own shitt.

"Its another Vietnam", according to you
Vietnam was a failure which the US admits therefore the war in Afghanistan is also a failure.

OMFG,but those Kaibiles were ruthless mofos! There was a brutal civil war in the 80s with their prez,Gen Rios Montt fighting commies in the countryside that morphed into a slaughter of indig Indian peasants against Spanish speaking urban elites.
The Mayan genocide left at least 200k died and mass graves carpeting rural areas.
By August 2011, four former officers from the Guatemalan Special Forces (Kaibiles) were sentenced to 6,060 years in prison each for their involvement in the Dos Erres Massacre.[122] In March 2011, a fifth former soldier, Pedro Pimentel Rios, was also sentenced to 6,060 years (after having been extradited from the United States) for his role in Dos Erres.[123]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guatemalan_genocide

Dayumm.....just-I can. Its obvious why the UN is hesitant to involve the Kaibiles.

Because the plan was allways to hand over to the Afghani people - holy sherbit my dude, what do you think the end goal of "nation building" is?

And no, Veitnam was not a failure - the plan worked, problem is that the plan was cut right at the crucial moment.

How many vehicles can withstand RPG rounds?

It is not supposed to, neither is it intended to. Heavy fire support, decent protection and mobility are the areas i'm looking at.

Normally it takes 2 operators to carry the rifle into position, it breaks in half (designed that way). He's probably doing it for the PR pose.

I actually didn’t reason it until you just pointed it out, the whole area around the truck is also scorched, either a high explosive artillery shell or an air strike.

Seriously! Where were u?

Sometimes I wonder your altruistic motives...the Georgia war was monitored live by the news media. It was a total flight by the Georgian army in the face of Russian advance. There are still footages of Russian armour manned by very young Russian troopers probably in their late teens and early twenties crushing whatever was left of any resistance by US trained Georgian servicemen that had seen action in Iraq. And that they did like a walk in the park.

Afghan Warriors (Mujahideen) that has buried 5 empires. Napolean Bonaparte and Alexander the Great sure have memories. The British should have known better. Russia may have burnt it's fingers but horned it's fighting skills in Kandahar. Why do u think they train and fight like men already dead.

Everyone knows the fact. The Taliban control two thirds of Afghanistan. I can't comprehend your aim when everyone knows the truth in black and white. Even the US Generals know how this would end. The Afghan warrior devotion to the code is absolute. It has been so for thousands of years. Religion is just a cover. It is a stain on the honor of the Pashtun tribesman to live under occupation under whatever guise. Now you know who will win even if it takes another one thousand years.

NAF has been busy

PRESS RELEASE
NIGERIAN AIR FORCE COMMENCES OPERATION RUWAN WUTA II, RECORDS HITS AGAINST BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS ON DAY ONE
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced Operation RUWAN WUTA II, as part of efforts to further decimate the ability of the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) to freely operate in the country. The Operation, which commenced on 23 October 2017, is essentially an intensive day and night aerial bombardment that is designed to rain significant fire on freshly discovered hideouts of the BHTs. On the first day of the operation, the NAF conducted several Air Interdiction missions in the Northeast, including one on a location in Garin Maloma. Previous intelligence reports, gathered through Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions by NAF ISR platforms had revealed the presence of a large number of BHTs in some dispersed structures in Garin Maloma. Consequently, the location was attacked, in succession, by two Alpha Jet aircraft. The first Alpha Jet aircraft attacked the settlement with bombs, which destroyed the targeted structures and caused fire around the structures where the BHTs were hiding, sending a few survivors scampering for safety. The second Alpha Jet aircraft, which strafed the area with rockets, subsequently took out some of the fleeing BHT survivors. Similarly, BHT locations in places such as Arra and Boboshe, amongst others, were successfully attacked by the NAF Mi-17 helicopter and the newly acquired Mi-35M helicopter.

NATO needed more troops. The warm bodies on the ground in that country were insufficient.

It is not geographical but a socio economic one. In parts of the country joining them is a way for young men to bring home to the table. Lack of media and internet access also reduces the effectiveness of countering the vir..gins seekers version of........lam.

so you’re telling me Afghanistan’s insane amount of mountain peaks, adverse living and fighting weather conditions and network of tunnels and caves has nothing to do with the failure of both Russia and NATO to successfully invade and occupy that country ? Okay man.

It’s share size and geographical make up is the reason that country needs soo many troops to police it, Jesus Christ lets apply basic sense here guys.

Nope!

Those obstacles won't have a strategic impact on any war with a major power. As NATO demolish them in any fight to capture in any area. Insufficient numbers means pulling troops somewhere to block a leak leaving another leak.

Look at the Tiger forces in Syria today they are shuffled all over the country in major engagements.
