See how nice and clean it looks? Not so nasty anymore. But now I see rust bubbles under the paint (which weren't obvious cos of the dirt before). I have to sand them out. I could only find 60 grit sandpaper, but i figured since this place is covered by plastic anyway, it's not such a big deal. 2 Likes

Latex gloves are shit for this job. Get thicker rubber or even leather ones.

After sanding, there's going to be rust dust and stuff around the area, so you need to vacuum again

After vacuuming, I applied the Rust Reformer with a cheap throwaway paint brush. You MUST wear gloves cos this guy stains stuff.

You can already see it "eating" the rust. It will also turn the metal to black, so you cant use it for outer body rust unless you plan to prime and paint. I'm going to leave it like this for 30 minutes, then apply again.

While that one cures, I'm going to deal with the spare tyre next. Had to knock of flaking rust with a hammer. It would have been nice to have an air chisel - my arms ache now.

This one will need wirebrushing first. I don't think I'll use Rust Reformer here. I got Q12 from Shoprite, says it eats rust away instead of converting, so... Let's do this. 1 Like |

Project is closed for today. I'll resume tomorrow. Areas treated: * Spare tyre carrier (Soaked in Q12) * Spare tyre (Loose rust knocked off then wirebrushed, no protection yet) * Driver and front passenger door bottoms and doorsills (the rust there was nasty, saw piles of SALT under the carpet. Wirebrushed and painted with Rust Reformer) * Bolts holding driver and passenger seats down (soaked in Rust Reformer) * Rear passenger seatbelt bolts (soaked in Rust Reformer) * Front passenger floor seatbelt bolt (soaked in Rust Reformer) These spots actually indicate that there's worse damage at the exact points UNDER the vehicle, So i'll keep an eye out for them. Updates to follow tomorrow. |

Resumed operation this morning, using degreaser and then soapy water to wash off all oil and debris from these members.

After, I washed it off with water. Of course this will now create pockets of moisture (which is how we got here in the first place) so it has to dry. Sun aint getting in here, so I'm forcing it with a heat gun (lol)

Notice how I put a polythene bag under the carrier? It will drip, and Rust Reformer will stain the floor black. That stain cannot be scrubbed out - found this out the hard way yesterday. |
