Sorry, but I can't remember anybody saying you agreed.
There is a strict difference between preference and correct. That I said 12noon is night in Nigeria, is strictly my choice/preference which no one can compel me to change, but that does not make it correct 'by the rules of my academic cohorts'.
As at today, if you can give an evolved authority which says ...Nma has become correct and prove it beyond reasonable doubts; not with 'what most prefer', I will gladly accept your views. We are all students of life aren't we? So go ahead and do that please.

Here is what somebody posted:

Do not be deceived, Chidimma is the correct one. The fact that everyone has been wrongly spelling it Chidinma for a long time does not make it correct.

And here is my reply:

Exactly the opposite. That's exactly what makes Chidinma the correct version. That's how language works.

Here is another post if mine:

Language is by usage. Whatever the vast majority of people are doing is correct. Afterall why should t be in kitchen. Makes no sense EXCEPT that's how everybody writes it. If everybody starts dropping that t that would become the correct spelling.

Makes sense now?

OK, I think I can see what your argument is. But then, in a situation where majority still know the difference and retain it, will that validate or invalidate your argument?
I know many family members and friends who correctly spell their name as Chidimma, should they do away with it since some people have erroneously written theirs as Nma? Will both be correct? Or should we wait till the wrongs are in the majority so as to do away with the right?
Re: Chidinma Or Chidimma? by vicfy(m): 10:36pm On Oct 29, 2017
In Igbo land, certain names are know to originate from certain areas. E.g Chidinma, Onyinyechi etc are Imo names while Arinze, Ifeanyi are Anambra. Therefore, Chidinma in Anambra could be spelt Chidimma (Bt dt doesn't mean its d right spelling). Just as Ifeanyi could be written as Iheanyi by an Imo man. Hence, to both States, the other borrowed names is known in formal Igbo Language (Igbo Izugbe) as "Mbite Okwu".

She is wrong. "God is good to me" is "chi dirim mma" or chidirimmma or Chidimmma NOT Chidimma and Igbos don't give that name anyway.

I personally know people by that name. It all depends on what part of Igbo area you are from or the choice of variety your parent choose in some cases. For instance, some will say, "odimnma", some will say "odirimnma". Tell me which one is correct and which one is not? taking dialects into consideration.

Chidinma is the spelling for me. First time I saw someone's name spelt as Chidimma was some few years back, and believe me, I thought it was a typographical error. I showed this thread to a friend and he concurred that Chidinma is the correct spelling... but what do I know!!!

Chidinma is the correct spelling

Beauty or good is spelt as "nma"
While an old woman or mother is spelt as "mma"

Chidinma means God is good.

There is nothing like "nma" in Igbo. On the other hand, "mma" means a lot of things depending on how it is pronounced.
Mma = Knife
Mma = Cutlass
Mma = Good
Mma = Beauty

Chidimma= God Is Good
Chi = God
Di = Is
Mma = Good

You got it correctly, there's nothing like nma in Igbo.

The full meaning of "God is good" and "God is good to me" is "Chi di mma" and "Chi dimu mma "which can be contracted to "Chidimma" no "N" in both sentences so Chidinma is wrong

Not necessary, anyone who understands Igbo should know there is no nm consonant in Igbo language, the correct spelling is Chidimma

ALL OF U ARE DISGRACING IGBO LAND.. MMA MEANS GOOD. NMA MEANS NOTHING. CHIDI(M-M)MA.. IE, THE TWO M'S BECOME ONE. MMA MEANS GOOD. NMA IS VERY 100% WRONG AND MEANS NOTHING. IGBO IS IGBO. BU because OF M AND N SYNDROME, ASK LITTLE KIDS IN PRENURSERY, IT SOMETIMES SOUND ALIKE SO OUTSIDERS OR HALF BAKED IGBOS DAT DONT KNOW THEIR ROOTS WILL MISSPELL .. BUT ITS NOT WORTH DEBATING .. ITS CHIDIMMA. OR NOTHING. PLS CLOSE THIS THREAD. END OF DISCUSSION

Chi-(God or gods), di-(is) and Mma-(good, beautiful and knife or machete) so chi-di-mma is the correct spelling as far as IGBO language is consign. if you write chi-di-nma in a exam you must fail because nma has no meaning in IGBO language.

Chidimma is the grammatically correct spelling of the name. According to Mazi Onwu's committee on Igbo Izugbe, M will follow M in a word while N follows N in a word.
Eg. Mma (Good, beauty, knife), Nna (Father), Nne (mother), mmanu (oil) , nnu (salt), Nnunu (bird), mmiri (water).

Different dialects have their traditional ways of spelling but it follows from above when you're looking for the grammatically correct spellings.

It seems ChidiNma is the most wrongly spelled name in Igbo language.
Correct spelling for emphasis is ChidiMMA. (God is good).

Committees don't determine the evolution of Language. It evolves through usage. If vast majority of Igbos like and use Chidinma, that becomes the correct spelling.

Language is by usage. Whatever the vast majority of people are doing is correct. Like, why should "t" be in kitchen. Makes no sense EXCEPT that's how everybody writes it. If everybody starts dropping that t that would become the correct spelling.

BTW it is concern not consign. grin

So as more and more Igbos decide that Chidinma looks and sounds better that becomes the correct spelling. That's how a living language "grows", evolves.

I am sure likewise at one point Johnson was spelt Johnsson and pronounced "John's son".
Re: Chidinma Or Chidimma? by Nobody: 3:01am On Oct 30, 2017
Chidinma
Chi = God; di = is; nma = good
Chidinma = God is good

Synonym: Nma also means beauty.

From my understanding, 'Chidinma' means "God is good"

while 'Chidimma' means "God is good TO ME"

some even bear 'ChiMdinma' meaning, "MY God is good"
or 'ChiMdimma' meaning MY God is good TO ME"

There is no wrong or right spelling, its only wrong when you use a variation for an individual with another variation of the name. I know most bearers are always fast to correct the caller on which particular one they bear despite that fact that the differences are slight.
Chimdimma means My God is good which is different from the op's question.
The correct one is Chidimma because in Igbo there is nothing like "nma" what we have is "mma."

There's always standard in every thing, languages inclusive.
The Standard English Language as we know today is slightly different from what native British and Americans speak, but would you rather use the so many different native styles or use the standard when you're on something official.

My point is, there's standard in everything, and I just pointed out the standard pattern in Igbo language but also different dialects have different spellings.
